Locking Donkey Kong Up

Ever wondered what Mario did after rescuing Daisy in the first Donkey Kong? Well, he lifts the primate away in a cage, imprisoning and likely preparing him for further torture. We get the whole aspect of Donkey Kong throwing barrels and stealing Mario’s girlfriend but do the King Kong references really have to go this far?

Super Mario is gaming- if you play video games, at some point or another, you played Mario. Mario continues to be the face of gaming, introducing new kids to the medium year in and out, and continuing to set the bar high with his excellent outings and adventures. Working on a Mario game, therefore, is probably a massive honor. But working only on Mario might get exhausting too- something that the legendary Takashi Tezuka, who is behind the Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 3D, and New Super Mario games, indicated in his column in Famitsu.

“We will continue to make 3D and 2D Mario games, but I want to make one that even exceeds New Super Mario Bros,” Tezuka said. “I can’t say anything concrete yet, but you may see it within a few years.” Right after this, however, he added, “I also kind of want to seriously work on something other than Mario.”

Personally, I want to see what Nintendo’s top brass – Miyamoto, Aonuma, Tezuka, Konno, Masuda – could do if they had full reign to make new IPs. We already saw what Nintendo’s ‘lower level’ talent can do when tasked with making a new IP, with Splatoon, and that was already excellent. Just how great would something coming from the very best people at Nintendo be?

But first of all, I want to see Super Mario Galaxy 3.

Nintendo has decided to switch up the marketing campaign for their Nintendo Wii U deluxe bundle. The new set attempts to put a focus on value, offering two games along with the console for the new price of $299.99. The bundle will now feature arguably Nintendo’s two most recognizable characters, the loveable, murderous plumbers, Mario and Luigi.

The two games offered within the new deluxe bundle will be the much acclaimed New Super Mario Bros, and the New Super Luigi. The existing Wii U Deluxe bundle, which will now cease to be sold, contained Nintendo Land. Nintendo Land, however, can still be bought via download in the Nintendo eShop starting November 1st, the same date of the switch.

“Mario and Luigi are two of the biggest heroes in video games,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “This new Wii U configuration gives people instant access to not one, but two of the most well-received Wii U games. It’s another example of the tremendous value and variety that Nintendo is offering consumers this holiday season.”

Hopefully this switch will succeed in boosting Nintendo’s Wii U sales.

New Super Luigi U will be coming out on June 20th and can be purchased via eShop for $19.99 or you may purchase it at a retail store as a stand-alone game on August 25th for $29.99.

Super Mario 3D Land, which has been at the top (or near the top) of all charts- 3DS and all formats- ever since it came out in November, has now sold 5 million units, becoming the first 3DS game to reach the milestone. Mario Kart 7 is close behind, with 4,540,000 copies sold.

The third best selling game of the 3DS is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, selling 2,490,000 since its release last June. Capcom’s Monster Hunter Tri G is the fourth highest selling 3DS game, selling over a million units.

Nintendo also announced that DS titles New Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart DS have also created records, with the former selling 28,740,000  unitsand the latter selling 22,300,000 units.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which came out in November last year, has sold 3,420,000 million copies globally. Wii Sports, now the Wii’s best selling game, has sold a whopping 79,160,000 copies, counting the millions of copies it must have sold when it was bundled with all Wiis. Bundled or not, this is an impressive figure indeed.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Mario Kart Wii also impress, having sold 25,470,000, 29,870,000 and 31,910,000 units respectively.

Nintendo recently announced plans to release a New Super Mario Bros. game for the 3DS. It will be out before April next year.
