Carrie Patel leaves Obsidian after 12 years to join Night School Studio as a game director, though its next project remains a mystery.

Obsidian Entertainment has some big plans coming to Avowed, but the action RPG’s director, Carrie Patel, is moving on. In a new LinkedIn post, Patel confirmed that she’s left the studio and joined Night School Studio. Owned by Netflix, it’s best known for the Oxenfree series.

Patel will be working as a game director at the studio, but it’s unknown on which project. She worked at Obsidian Entertainment for 12 years and has been a writer for the Pillars of Eternity series, a narrative designer on The Outer Worlds, and a director on The Outer Worlds’ DLC Peril on Gorgon. After departures and a turbulent development cycle, she took over as director for Avowed.

As for Avowed, Obsidian recently released an update that added Arachnophobia Safe Mode and improved reactivity. Its next patch is due this Summer and adds new abilities for NPCs, new skills, custom map markers, and more. New Game Plus, Photo Mode, a new weapon type, and more will arrive this Fall in another update.

Night School Studio delivers a sequel that surpasses even its excellent predecessor.

The original Oxenfree is a textbook example of a an indie gem- a small team taking a unique idea and crafting it into a special game that lives long in the memory. Expectations from its sequel have been high, and the wait for it to launch has been quite a long one, coming seven years after the release of its predecessor, but Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals doesn’t buckle under the pressure in the slightest. If anything, it takes the foundations of the first game and builds upon them yet another excellent story that not only stands toe-to-toe with what preceded it, but even surpasses it.

Set five years after the events of the first game, Oxenfree 2 puts players in the shoes of a new protagonist in Riley, an environmental artist, who has taken a job investigating electromagnetic anomalies on the small island town of Camena, her childhood home, which also lies in the vicinity of Edwards Island, the setting of the first game. Not long after arriving and meeting up with Jacob, who accompanies her throughout the rest of the journey, Riley discovers that things are way more messed up and complicated than she could have expected. With everything from mysterious radio signals and portals in the sky to a cult operating in the shadows and terrifying visions and supernatural entities afoot, it quickly becomes clear that if Riley and Jacob don’t find a way to fix things, the consequences will be disastrous, to say the least.

"The story is Oxenfree 2’s biggst strength."

Unsurprisingly, the story is Oxenfree 2’s biggst strength. It’s a masterclass in building tension, mystery, and palpable dread, and above all, in getting truly bizarre without ever feeling like it’s losing touch with reality. From the very first second, the game does an excellent job of raising questions, and as it progresses, it doles out the answers to those questions in even more satisfactory fashion. Unpeeling the layers of the tale it spins remains a compelling experience from beginning to end, thanks to how well Oxenfree 2 strikes that balance. Plenty of it also ties in strongly with the first game’s story, especially as you progress further into the game, and though the original Oxenfree isn’t exactly required reading, having knowledge of its story will definitely enrich Lost Signals’ own narrative that much more.

The strong horror vibes on display here also contribute to that significantly. Camena is an incredibly atmosheric location and is built up as a small, isolated town that feels like it has its own history and distinct personality, but by injecting psychological and techno-horror elements into proceedings, Oxenfree 2 elevates the atmosphere to a whole another level. From mind-bending time loops to conversations with possessed characters to encounters with projections of the supernatural beings that the story revolves around, the game does an excellent job of keeping players on the edge of their seat, in a way that even if you’re not outright terrified, you will, at the very least, be deeply unnerved by what you’re witnessing on the screen.

Just as strong as the larger tale it spins up and the horror vibes it exhibits is the more personal and intimate side of Oxenfree 2’s story. The core duo of Riley and Jacob is an excellent one, with Riley in particular being an instantly likeable protagonist. Both of them, as well as the game’s rich and varied cast of supporting characters, grow in complexity and nuance as the story progresses and you learn more about them and their lives, which, combined with witnessing (and contributing to) the shifting dynamics of their relationships makes for a captivating experience. That, combined with excellently written dialogue and top-notch voice acting, means it’s hard to point at a single weak link in Oxenfree 2’s cast of characters.

"From mind-bending time loops to conversations with possessed characters to encounters with projections of the supernatural beings that the story revolves around, the game does an excellent job of keeping players on the edge of their seat, in a way that even if you’re not outright terrified, you will, at the very least, be deeply unnerved by what you’re witnessing on the screen."

And of course, what truly allows all of that to shine in Oxenfree 2 is its excellent dialogue system. As those who’ve played the first game will happily tell you ever chance they get, the dialogue system here is easily one of the best and most effective you’ll find in a game. That’s thanks in great part to how natural every conversation feels. People interrupt each other, trail off in the middle of sentences to change topics, pick up old threads- almost like they’re, you know, actual people. All of it happens during gameplay, allowing you to move around, explore, and look at things while you’re having conversations with other characters, and it all gels together wonderfully. You now also have access to a walkie-talkie, which allows you to switch between channels to converse with different characters and dig deeper into the story. From how it shapes Riley’s character to how it allows you to meaningfully impact the narrative to how it enriches all aspects of the storytelling, Oxenfree 2’s dialoge system deserves massive props for no shortage of things.

Outside of dialogue options, Oxenfree 2 keeps things pretty simple on the gameplay front, just as its predecessor did. Presented as a 2.5D sidescroller, Oxenfree 2 allows you to explore a pretty large map at your own pace. Of course, by its very nature, it’s not exactly sprawling, and there isn’t a ton of stuff to do, but light sprinklings of traversal mechanics, some exploration and optional activities, and the odd puzzle here and there ensure that, in spite of how simplistic and straightforward it remains from beginning to end, the core gameplay loop in Oxenfree 2 always feels oddly compelling.

There are some issues to speak of here, of course- for instance, you’ll be doing a fair bit of backtracking and going through areas that you’ve already visited, which can occasionally get a bit cumbersome, especially thanks to the slow movement speed (though the conversations Riley has with other characters during these sequences do curtail some of those issues). Meanwhile, Oxenfree 2’s controls can also get a little finnicky on some occasions. That mostly materializes in the form of the game failing to read your inputs or the occasional depth perception issue brought about by the game’s 2.5D approach. Though not too persistent or even all that problematic in the grand scheme of things, these issues are certainly noticeable.

"What truly allows Oxenfree 2’s story and characters to shine is its excellent dialogue system."

When you’re done with Oxenfree 2 though, chances are that you’ll find it very easy to forgive and overlook the few flaws that it does have. It’s not a terribly long game, but just like its predecessor, it laves a lasting impression with everything that it has to say and show throughout the duration of its runtime. By keeping its core gameplay mechanics simple and uncomplicated, it delivers a fun, zen loop that, above all else, allows the game’s biggest strengths to flourish that much better. And those biggest strengths, namely the story, storytelling, and dialogue system, truly are the highlights of the experience here. All of it comes together in an expertly crafted game that, in spite of its short runtime, isn’t one that I’m likely to stop thinking about anytime soon.

Players can initiate conversations with characters who aren't nearby, leading to different stories, and they can also call you.

Night School Studios’ Oxenfree changed how many players interacted with dialogue. In addition to branching choices, it lets you interrupt characters at specific points or say nothing at all, which also impacts the narrative. Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals features the same mechanics when it launches next week but expands on them further with the new Walkie-Talkie.

As detailed in a new developer diary, you can speak with characters who aren’t in the same vicinity and have conversations that branch off in different ways. They can also call you, and it’s up to you to respond or ignore them completely. It all contributes to the overarching story, and if it’s anything like the first game, different endings could await.

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is set five years later, with Riley Poverly returning to her hometown in Camena to investigate an electromagnetic phenomenon. It’s available on July 12th for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, PC and mobile devices via Netflix. Another developer diary is still coming, so stay tuned for more details before release.

Night School Studio's highly anticipated adventure sequel is due out sometime this year, but doesn't yet have an official release date.

Announced a couple of years ago, Night School Studio’s Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals has been a game that many have been looking forward to, especially if you were a fan of the original. Originally due out last year, the sci-fi adventure sequel was delayed to sometime in 2023, and now, its release date may have been leaked.

As per @PlaystationSize on Twitter – a page that routinely tracks changes to the PlayStation Network backend – Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is due out a little over three months from now, on July 12. Night School Studio has not yet announced a launch date for the title, so it remains to be seen whether this is accurate- if it is though, one would imagine that an announcement will be coming in the next few weeks, if not sooner.

Whenever it launches, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals will be available on PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. There’s no word yet on whether Xbox versions are also planned.

"We owe it to our amazing community to make Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals the best game it can possibly be," says Night School Studio.

After languishing without a release date, Night School Studio has announced a delay for Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals. It’s now releasing in 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5.

In a new tweet, the developer said, “We owe it to our amazing community to make Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals the best game it can possibly be.” To make it “truly special” and implement additional localization, it’s moving the release window to next year.

Announced in 2021, the sequel takes place five years after the critically acclaimed 2.5D side-scrolling adventure. Riley returns to the town of Camena but unfortunately, she again encounters strange radio signals which lead to even more mysteries. Fans can expect dialogue choices, rifts, and other supernatural occurrences. Those signals even made their way into the original game via a patch.

It should be interesting to see where the sequel goes, especially following Night School Studio’s acquisition by Netflix. A release on mobiles via Netflix’s app? We’ll have to wait for more details, so stay tuned in the coming months.

Following the release of the VOID Riders DLC, one dress up as Alex and listen to the Nikitch Dubby edit of "Beacon Beach."

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals doesn’t have a release date yet but there’s some good news for fans of the series. Night School Studio is teaming up with Roll7’s OlliOlli World for an Oxenfree collaboration. By inputting the postcode “MV32FR33”, players can dress as Alex and also experience the Nikitch Dubby edit of “Beacon Beach.”

Alex’s arrival comes in the wake of the new VOID Riders DLC which adds new challenges, gear and the new V.O.I.D. biome. Areas like Sunshine Valley and Cloverbrook have also seen some changes while a new tractor beam mechanic is also available for extending tricks. This is the first of two paid expansions with the second slated to arrive in Fall 2022.

Roll7 is also working on Rollerdrome, a third-person shooter/skating title for PS4, PS5 and PC. It’s out on August 16th and sees players gunning down foes in skating arenas, performing tricks to restore their ammo.
A Plague Tale: Requiem, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, and Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course have been confirmed to be part of Tribeca Festival's nine-game lineup.

Starting June, we’re going to get a barrage of new updates and announcements on upcoming games from all corner of the industry, with summer being the window where developers and publishers usually like to drop those details. Summer Game Fest is set to come back this June, and Tribeca Festival will also be returning under its banner. Now, the full lineup for the latter has been confirmed.

The Tribeca Festival will feature a lineup of nine games this year, with quite a few eye-catching highlights among them. One of them is A Plague Tale: Requiem. Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment haven’t said much about the game since they last showed a trailer for it at The Game Awards in December, though they did reveal a Collector’s Edition for it in February, while brief gameplay details also recently emerged thanks to leaked Achievements. The game has a 2022 launch window, and is likely to receive a firm release date.

The long-awaited Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course is also going to be present at Tribeca Festival. The Cuphead expansion was originally announced back in 2018, and has since been delayed numerous times, first from 2019 into 2020, then from 2020 into 2021, then finally getting a June 30, 2022 release date last year.

Another major name included in the lineup is Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, which is in the works at Night School Studio, which was acquired by Netflix in September of last year. Other games expected to show up at the festival include the recently announced American Arcadia, As Dusk Falls, Immortality, The Club, Thirsty Suitors, and Venba.

Tribeca Games Spotlight is set for June 10 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET, where you can expect to see more of the aforementioned games. Meanwhile, Tribeca Festival will also bring with it extended demos of each of these games, so you can expect a healthy drop of gameplay footage and new details. A Plague Tale: Requiem will get a 40-minute demo, Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course will get a 30-minute demo, while Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals will get a 25-minute demo.

The streaming giant has acquired the developer as they expand more into the gaming landscape.

Earlier this year, Netflix announced they were planning to enter into the gaming landscape, with a big initial focus on mobile. While the company had dipped its toes into the past, but now it seems they are ready to go all in. We don’t quite know what that will look like just yet, only that it will be integrated into their current services in some way, they have made a move to pick up a new studio as they ramp up.

On their official website, Night School Studio, has officially announced they have been acquired by Netflix. The developer is mainly known for Oxenfree and Afterparty. Though they also worked on other titles such as a mobile game based on the Mr. Robot TV series. It’s unclear what they will be doing, but the statement on their website reads as below:

“Over the last few months, we’ve had countless thoughtful chats about our respective visions for where we see games, storytelling, and our collective opportunity for positive impact somewhere in the middle.

“Night School wants to stretch our narrative and design aspirations across distinctive, original games with heart. Netflix gives film, TV, and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing. It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively.

“Of course, it’s a surreal honor to be the first games studio to join Netflix! Not only do we get to keep doing what we do, how we like to do it, but we get a front-row seat on the biggest entertainment platform in the world. The Netflix team has shown the utmost care for protecting our studio culture and creative vision. We’ll keep making Oxenfree 2. We’ll keep cooking up new game worlds.

“For now, there’s a kaleidoscope of butterflies in our team’s collective stomachs. (Apparently that’s what you call a group of butterflies?) Because we truly believe we’ve got a chance to positively impact the way people discover, play, and share story games with each other.”

As of now, there has been no announced games for Netflix’s gaming push, nor clarification on when it could start. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available. The next game from Night School is Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, which is set to release in 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch and PC.
