Nintendo also dominated the overall charts for the region.

2020 was something of a crazy year all around. The gaming industry saw a massive boom, in no small part due to many lockdown situations stemming from the global COVID-19 pandemic. It was something every region benefited from, including France, which saw a record year.

As reported by GamesIndustry, trade body SELL says that France saw 11.3% growth for the games market year over year, with 2.3 million consoles and over 27 million games sold. It also pulled in a overall record €5.3 Billion in revenue. FIFA 21 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons were the top sellers with FIFA 21 selling 1.3 million copies and Animal Crossing selling 1.1 million copies. Do keep in mind, however, that does not include digital for Animal Crossing as Nintendo does not share that information. New Horizons topped the physical chart and if digital were included, most likely would have been on top of the physical + digital one as well.

Nintendo largely dominated the charts in 2020 for France with 11 of the top 20 physical games belonging to Nintendo. Even without reporting digital, many of their titles charted on the combined physical and digital chart as well, which you can see below.

The legendary Director just says to stop thinking about it for the time being.

It has now almost been 4 years since Bayonetta 3 was announced for the Nintendo Switch with nothing of any real note coming afterward. While the developer PlatinumGames has reassured us that development is going well for three separate years now, one can’t help but wonder just what happened with the game. Well, the always vocal Hideki Kamiya has some advice: just forget about it.

In an interview with VGC, Kamiya, who directed the first title, was asked about the game once again, and he pretty much laughed it off, and said that for now everyone should just forget about Bayonetta 3, and that way when we do finally do get something, it’ll be a pleasant surprise.

“It’s not really our position to say, but… it’s January. We’ve got to have something come out, right? I guess it’s safe to expect that something will come out. There’s still a lot of the year left is what I’m saying.

“I understand it’s driving the fans crazy! In light of that, my suggestion would be that maybe we should all reset and forget about Bayonetta 3. Then when something finally does happen, it will be a nice surprise, won’t it?”

PlatinumGame did say they hoped to share an update for the game, as well as others the studio is working on, at the beginning of the year. Whether or not you want to read too much into Kamiya’s words is up to you, but it’s not the worst advice since it seems pretty clear we aren’t going to hear about the game until probably near release, whenever that will be.

The first Bayonetta released way back in 2009 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and eventually would see re-releases on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and Wii U. While moderately successful, it took Nintendo stepping in to revive Bayonetta 2 as an exclusive to Wii U, where it remained until being re-released with the first game in 2018 on the Switch. Bayonetta 3 was then announced as a Switch-exclusive at The Game Awards 2017, but has not been seen since.

Capcom has a lot of iconic IPs in their graveyard, and next month one of those will rise from the grave as Sir Arthur will return with Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection. The game was announced to be coming to the Switch and also promised a lot of pain and punishment. The pre-order is now live with some new details on what to expect.

If you’re maybe intimated by the legacy of the game as being hard as nails, it will have multiple difficulty levels to chose from. You briefly see the option in the trailer, and how it equates to the amount of enemies on the screen. In the video you also see the use of weapons and magic you will use against foes, as well as ‘Shadow’ levels, which are remixed and more difficult versions of levels that can be accessed after clearing them regularly. It also ends with what appears to be a very sped up version of a boss fight, possibly hinting at some other alternate mode or speed toggle.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection will release on Nintendo Switch on February 25th, and will be a digital-only title that will retail for $29.99 USD. You can see the game’s eShop page through here.

The game on the hybrid system seems to have been a big success.

While we’re close to the next game from CD Projekt RED, the much anticipated and talked about Cyberpunk 2077, there was a pretty big (or small, depending on how you look at it) development for their previous title that helped launch them to the heights they are at now- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. A Switch version was released late last year, surprising many, and it seems CDPR is pretty happy with it.

Via their latest earnings call, company Adam Kiciński reaffirmed that the unlikely port was a big success. He called the version of the game a revenue driver, calling back to an announcement earlier this year that it helped the company’s revenue go up year over year (thanks to Seeking Alpha for the transcription).

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Switch was one of those unlikely ports that was pretty technically impressive. That game is also said to be getting native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions at some point in the future, so no doubt it’ll be the gift that keeps giving for the foreseeable future.

It’s been quite the news week for Fortnite, the incredibly popular battle royale shooter from Epic Games, as they are feuding with both Apple and Google about how they operate their app stores, with the Apple feud especially seeming to escalate recently. But life, and Fortnite, goes on all the same and the next season is getting an infusion of Marvel it seems.

On the official Twitter, a very brief teaser was posted with a tease of Thor as well as the Marvel brand. Nothing else is shown, but there was a similar cross promotion when Avengers: Endgame was out in theaters. Fortnite has become something of a cultural melting pot, having tons of brands crossing over. It’s not clear if this will be just Thor-focused or Marvel in general, but we’ll probably find out more as we get closer to the season.

Fortnite is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. The game is no longer available on iOS or Android. Chapter 2, Season 4 will launch on August 27th.

The PS4 is selling faster than the highest selling consoles of all time, while the Switch is keeping up with its pace.

Sony recently announced that the PS4, despite being in the seventh year of its life, has hit a major sales landmark- it has shipped over 100 million units worldwide. That’s a huge achievement in and of itself, and looking at the lineup of games coming to the PS4 over the next year or so, it doesn’t look like those numbers will be slowing down significantly any time soon.

But what’s even more impressive is the pace at which the console has got to this milestone. Taking to Twitter, Niko Partners’ senior analyst Daniel Ahmad recently shared some interesting figures, which show that the PS4 has shipped 100 million units worldwide faster than the PS2 and the Nintendo Wii did. Those two are, of course, the highest selling home consoles of all time, with sales in excess of 150 million and 100 million respectively. It’s pretty much guaranteed that the PS4 will overtake the Wii’s lifetime sales (and very soon, at that), but it’ll be interesting to see if it can topple the PS2.

In addition to that, it looks like Nintendo are also doing very well for themselves with the Switch. Having recently crossed 36 million units shipped worldwide, the Switch is more or less matching the pace of sales set by the PS4. Whether or not it can keep up that pace for a sustained and prolonged period of time to hit the 100 million mark is something that remains to be seen, especially with next gen consoles from both Sony and Microsoft coming in soon, but if Nintendo maintains the output of quality exclusives that they’ve currently been doling out, it might just have a chance to do that. Those hardware revisions might help as well.

Here is an update to the cumulative global console shipment chart.
The chart is launch aligned.

Key points:
– PS4 surpasses 100m, faster than PS2 and Wii
– Switch reaches 36.87m, tracking inline with PS4 pic.twitter.com/o28T7l9f9j

The base roster is 40 characters strong, with some surprises.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order hits stores today. The game is the return of the brawler series that’s packed to the gills with Marvel characters, from the beloved to the obscure. We already know the third entry would follow in those footsteps, as we’ve seen a lot of characters already. Now we may know that full base roster, thanks to some datamining.

People have been digging through the game’s code and have come back with some interesting things. We have a lot of DLC slots, though none are named (though we do know what one DLC pack will consist of). The remaining base roster is rounded up to 40 due to the previously unknown Blackbolt, Medusa, Vision, Valkyrie, and an unlockable Thanos and Loki.

Like all leaks and datamines, we are filing this one under speculation, but considering that Loki was confirmed as playable at San Diego Comic-Con, there’s a good chance this is pretty on the nose- and we know even more are joining soon. You don’t have to wait long to find out if it’s legit, since Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is available as of today on the Nintendo Switch.

A mod gives Breath of the Wild a (somewhat) more realistic look.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a total masterpiece, and one of the best games ever made. Its look is also more or less iconic at this point, due to its popularity—the blend of cel-shading and realistic textures, and the striking art style that seems to take from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but makes it sharper and cleaner.

But there are obviously some who want a Zelda game without the cel-shading. You know, like a realistic Zelda game, not dissimilar to how Twilight Princess or even the Wii U tech demo looked. And it looks like it’s actually possible to get Breath of the Wild to look like that. Somewhat.

Arkh Longstride took the game running on the PC emulator CEMU, and stripped it of the cel-shading shader, and the result is… interesting. The game still looks decidedly stylized, mind, but the colors are far more muted, and I think the effect is less striking than it is in the native game. You can check it out for yourself below.

A mainline game, that is.

A week before E3, Nintendo announced Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon for the Nintendo 3DS, consigning the Switch to be getting just Pokken Tournament DX, and breaking hearts worldwide. However, it looks like they were saving a very special announcement for E3- Pokemon is coming to the Nintendo Switch. A brand new, full fledged, core, mainline Pokemon RPG coming to the Switch, developed by Game Freak.

We don’t know when it is coming- the head of The Pokemon Company was very clear that the game may not be done until late next year- but it is coming, which also makes the Nintendo Switch the very first Nintendo console ever to receive Pokemon. A brand new, HD Pokemon RPG. People have waited for this day for years, and now it is coming at last.

Ahead of that, if you do want Pokemon, you can get Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon on 3DS later this year, or you can pick up Pokken DX on the Nintendo Switch.
