The Nissan PlayStation GT Academy, which, as the name gives away, was formed by Nissan and PlayStation India (co-branded with the Gran Turismo series) to scout out and promote motor racing talent in India, has been a success thus far, seeing aspiring racers from both Mumbai and Delhi. However, it is Mumbai that is currently topping the leaderboards.

Of course, the story isn’t over yet- the award-winning and internationally acclaimed driver discovery program will complete qualifying rounds in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai by June 2014 before finalizing the quickest 14 lap times that emerge out of all five cities in contention for the first Indian edition of GT Academy.

The program uses Gran Turismo co-branding; Gran Turismo 6 was released on the PlayStation 3 late last year to middled response both from the critics and from the general gaming public, further signifying the series’ downward slide that began with Gran Turismo 5 back in 2010. A new Gran Turismo game for the PlayStation 4 is expected.

Nissan and PlayStation have launched a GT Academy in India with the aim of trying to find local motor racing talent. This academy is the newest in a line that includes similar institutions in Europe, Russia, Middle East, South Africa, and USA.

GT Academy’s qualifying malls will begin with live events to boost awareness at high footfall, popular malls in five Indian cities, followed by Nissan hosting the inaugural competition at the Delhi Auto Expo, one of the world’s most eminent auto expos, on February 6 2014. There will also be an online qualifier on PSN.

Matthew De La Haye, Nissan’s Vice President Communications, Africa, Middle East, India and Europe said, “We’re delighted to launch GT Academy in India; bringing the programme here reinforces our commitment to growing the Nissan brand and developing relationships with both existing and potential customers. GT Academy really proves that Nissan stands for innovation and excitement for everyone.”

Darren Cox, Nissan’s Director of Global Motorsports said, “For many reasons having India join the GT Academy programme has been a long held personal objective of mine and I’m proud that it has now come to fruition. GT Academy is getting huge international interest. We know that there are gamers outside of the traditional GT Academy territories that want a shot at winning so in 2014 we have extended the program to India as well. Nissan is an international company with global ambitions and it’s exciting that GT Academy reflects that.”

Sony has announced via Official PlayStation Blog that a playable demo of Gran Turismo 6 is on the way this July 2nd. On July 2nd, users can go to the PlayStation Store to download a playable demo version of the upcoming Gran Turismo 6.

Gran Turismo 6 was announced on May 15th during it’s 15th anniversary reveal for the PlayStation 3. The creator of Gran Turismo is also not ruling out the possibility of a PlayStation 4 version later down the line sometime in the future.

The interesting part about the Gran Turismo 6 demo is that it will also be another way for the fans to gain entry to Gran Turismo Academy where they can join up for real racing with the Nissan. For more information about this please check out the Official PlayStation Blog.
