NPCs will show new players where to go among other things.

Titanfall, Respawn Entertainment’s premier, multiplayer-only first person shooter, looks to incorporate various aspects of a single-player campaign into its maps. One of those aspects includes bots, but on speaking to EDGE Online, producer Drew McCoy rejected the term, calling them “a different class of people”.

“They’re not bots. They’re not meant as a human replacement. They’re a different class of people. Pilots are these super-awesome soldiers that have the gear to do double jumps, the weapons to take down Titans, but the AI are the low-level guys that are always on the ground – they’re not double-jumping and they’re really weak, but the purpose they serve design-wise is multifaceted.

“They show new players where to go. And once they start fighting, they’re usually fighting other AI because all the experienced players are fighting on walls and rooftops. New players start getting kills on AI, when usually in multiplayer games they’re getting completely whacked.”

It will be interesting to see how this works out in an online environment when Titanfall releases next year for Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. For now, Respawn is hitting on all cylinders with the game and we can’t wait to get our hands on it.

For the many times that protagonists are overrated...

It’s the interactive elements of games that make them so special and it is player interaction that truly separates games from film, but interactivity is a finite resource. Very few games allow you full control of more than one character, and often spreading your play time between multiple characters give you fewer options with each subsequent avatar you inhabit.

Many characters aren’t playable at all, designed solely to aid or guide you within the game world. Whilst this is a necessary part of most games, the NPCs in certain games are often so cool, it’s an outright shame that we get no way of playing them at all. We’ve brought together a selection of ten non-playable we would love to get our hands on one of these days. This list may contain spoilers!

What were your favorite non playable characters? Let us know in the comments section below. For more exciting and interesting features, check out our Features page here.

Stay tuned for more news and updates.
