Braid: Anniversary Edition is available on PC, PlayStation consoles, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices, while Xbox players will have to wait until May 15.

Braid is considered to be one of the most revered indie games of recent memory, and developer Thekla has rounded up work on the anticipated Anniversary Edition, which is available now for PC, PlayStation consoles, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms. Check out the trailer down below.

Featuring dozens of new levels and hours’ worth of developer commentary alongside hand-repainted graphics, Braid: Anniversary Edition gives plenty of reasons for veterans to pick this one up for another time. Other quality-of-life improvements include smoother animations and new soundtracks that are derived from the base game’s OST.

In our review of the game that you can check out through here, we awarded Braid: Anniversary a 9/10, citing the additions to the base game that make this the definitive way to experience this beloved indie classic. The game will also be releasing for Xbox platforms on 15 May, while MacOS and Linux versions of the same will be arriving at a later date- so stay tuned for more details.

Thekla, Inc.'s remaster brings new life to a beloved indie platformer, whether it's in the presentation or the extensive developer commentary.

As Vin Diesel once said before The Fast and the Furious life really took hold of him, “Time is fleeting.” It can mean multiple things – life is short, you have limited time, and the seconds, minutes and hours of your life fly by. However, Jonathan Blow’s Braid proves another addendum of time after almost 16 years since its launch on the Xbox 360 – that it’s relative. What was a Game of the Year candidate, an instant classic, a signal flare attracting more attention for indie games (alongside Super Meat Boy and Fez), an example of video games as art, remains so all these things and more.

It’s still a poignant, haunting experience that challenges the traditional notions of gaming while presenting its own compelling gameplay. Braid also all the more relevant in today’s gaming world – one where video game budgets continue to balloon to absurd heights. Where some of the most relevant platformers are the dynasties and franchises – the Marios and Sonics of the world (no disrespect, of course). An industry where small and/or relatively unknown teams can still find absurd measures of breakout success.

"Braid is the story of Tim, an unassuming man who wants to find the Princess, ideally, save her from a monster and make up for a mistake he made."

Developed and published by Thekla Inc, Braid Anniversary Edition isn’t just a re-release – it offers gorgeous new visuals and backgrounds with higher-resolution art, updated sound effects and a more extensive soundtrack. There’s the option to switch between the original and updated visuals, and it really can’t be overstated how gorgeous the latter appears. Whether it’s the new foliage in environments, painted lights and shadows, improved effects for actions, improved animations or the extensive attention to detail, the graphical update is impressive all on its own. Suffice it to say that it runs incredibly well with no hiccups.

That’s not all, as new options like Speedruns (either for individual worlds or the whole game) and heaps of developer commentary are also included. It’s a lot to unpack, yet it would all be for nought if the core experience didn’t hold up.

Braid is the story of Tim, an unassuming man who wants to find the Princess, ideally, save her from a monster and make up for a mistake he made. By peering into short journal entries in each world’s “hub,” other aspects of Tim’s life are known, from his relationship with his parents to what seems like an experiment. The fact that the Princess is always noted as “being in another castle” by a cute stuffed dinosaur – who also questions whether she’s real – only adds to the mystery and intrigue.

There are initially five worlds to explore, each consisting of multiple levels where you collect puzzle pieces to form different frames. While the first level feels like a Mario clone, complete with goomba-like foes to stomp, things pick up immediately in the second as the player quickly learns of Tim’s ability to rewind time. It allows for negating deaths and redoing sections if you make mistakes, but that’s only the first world.

"Of course, if you want to see what every stage has to offer without bothering to collect the pieces of each frame, go ahead, but you won’t unlock the first and final world or the proper ending."

Subsequent worlds play around with different concepts of time, from everything – enemies, projectiles and even keys moving forwards or backwards in time and space as you do to some objects being unaffected by its flow.

So while you flip switches, jump off enemy’s heads and collect keys to unlock doors, it’s all wrapped up in clever puzzles that require ingenuity, timing and a fair number of retries. What happens when you start to think in terms of recording and rewinding your actions, especially when you create a temporary clone of yourself in the process or manipulate keys to open multiple doors? It’s a fascinating exercise that remains as clever now as it did all those years ago.

Of course, if you want to see what every stage has to offer without bothering to collect the pieces of each frame, go ahead, but you won’t unlock the first and final world or the proper ending. The responsiveness and physics of the platforming really are something to behold, especially when manipulating time.

Tim may be immune to fall damage, but can still bounce off the environment depending on the velocity, messing up some landings. He can drop down from ladders and fences but can’t leap up from them to attain greater heights. Minute as all this may seem, they’re critical to solving some trickier puzzles since you need to work around these limitations.

"You might think the developer commentary would shine more light on this, and, to be fair, it doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the more popular theories."

Otherwise, Braid lacks many of the so-called “traditional” platforming elements. There is only one boss to fight, who appears twice, though the method for taking them out differs significantly on the next go-around. Outside the frame pieces and mysterious stars, there aren’t any collectibles or extraneous dialogue during stages, making for a tighter, well-paced experience.

A good chunk of the game’s legacy also centers on the interpretation of its plot points, as it culminates in one of the best ending levels and reveals in a video game to date. The true identity of the Princess, Tim’s real life and how he views the world around him vs. its actual state, the misconception of heroism – there’s a lot to glean from it all, but Blow and his team aren’t forthcoming with the answers, even if some meanings are more blatant than others.

You might think the developer commentary would shine more light on this, and, to be fair, it doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the more popular theories. However, it’s a deep dive into the game’s development – its design, the art (both original and updated), music, programming and much more. There are options to delve into separate aspects of the entire experience – represented as separate interactive levels – or play through the whole game while the commentary outlines everything.

What motivated changing a certain level’s architecture? How did the idea for the game come about? Is the opening section meant to depict a city on fire (spoilers: it’s actually just a city during sunset)? All these questions and many more are answered throughout, while plenty remains up in the air.

"To say that Braid is an essential part of gaming history would be a given – it’s a title that should be experienced, even if some sections can be a little more frustrating than others, even when everything clicks."

If you thought there was some deeper significance to the boss and one other important character wearing armor…well, the answer may not be what you want to hear. It doesn’t change the fact that the sheer breadth of commentary, from early sketches and documents to interviews, is worth the price of admission for hardcore fans alone.

To say that Braid is an essential part of gaming history would be a given – it’s a title that should be experienced, even if some sections can be a little more frustrating than others, even when everything clicks. Even without one of the best platformers of all time and the various improvements made to its presentation, the Anniversary Edition stands out for its sheer range of extra content. It’s intriguing to hear about the process behind everything and how things came to be, not to mention Blow reflecting on the project after all these years.

In closing, Braid could be analogous to the industry itself, coming full circle and seeing the prologue seamlessly shift into an epilogue. Where the end becomes the beginning, and amid the doom and gloom, there’s some hope – or at least the potential for the same – even amid all the messy dealings. Maybe it’s unintentional, maybe not – the fact that it can still inspire such thinking to this day is undeniably impressive.

Developers Number None have released a bunch of new screenshots for their upcoming puzzle title called The Witness. There’s some genuinely neat looking stuff here, and it’s definitely worth looking through. There’s a beautiful and rich colour palette, along with what seems from the screenshots to be some great detail work.

Check out the images through the gallery and take a look at the screenshots that have been provided to us.

The Witness releases some time this year for the PS4, PC and iOS. Originally, Jonathan Blow wanted to release the game for the PS3 and the Xbox 360, but development on the two HD twins was cancelled when Blow realized that the two systems would not be able to give the development team the kind of power that was required to pull off what they wanted to do in the first place.

Stay tuned to GB for continued coverage on the game.

The Witness is a brand new and upcoming 3D exploration puzzle game from the independent video game development entity Number None, Inc, led by Jonathan Blow who is also the creator of smash hit puzzle game that saw cross platform commercial success, “Braid”. The game will be releasing at some unspecific time in early 2014 and is set to release on Microsoft Windows PC, iOS and PlayStation 4.

When the game launches on PlayStation4 it will initially be as a timed exclusive, before it launches on other video game consoles. This timed exclusivity will not affect the launch window for the upcoming PC and iOS version of the game. In September of 2010 a playable demo of the game was made available at the Penny Arcade Expo, whether or not a pre-release demo will be available remains to be seen.

Video game developer Jonathan Blow has said that his ideas and plans for The Witness came to him after he released his smash hit puzzle platforming game Braid. How The Witness came into existence was a result of Blows decision to take time of from “serious development” after seeing how much of a success Braid had become. His plan was to spend time working with various new video game prototypes and experiment with the game medium and the concepts within.

During each of these prototype development periods, Blow would spend a couple of months on each, bouncing from project to project while carrying interesting concepts across. Whilst working on these various prototype builds he built the initial concepts of The Witness, which he has said seemed “very ambitious and challenging”. Official and dedicated development for The Witness began some time in late 2008, Blow had both high expectations and concerns surrounding the game but despite these, the games compelling nature made him continue on. When developing a separate prototype game, Blow has said that there was a “magic moment”, rather than continuing with one idea to base a game around, he took this magic moment from the prototype and distilled and refined it until he was able to make a gameplay mechanic based on it, giving it its own game and story.

The non linear style of exploration in the game and the focus on perception and solving puzzles is the focus of the game and because of this, he has compared the gameplay mechanic and the magic moment to discovering a spoiler for a movie, likely meaning it is an unexpected but often pleasing surprise. The non linear nature of the game, and the emphasis on perception has brought Blow to hope that individual players will have their own view on the story and how it unfolds. This initially drew concerns from the gaming community, calling it “pretentious” , these worries vanished however after the game was shown by Sony where it proved to be more than just another “Dear Esther”-esque game.

To increase the ease of development for The Witness, the gameplay and the games engine were all simplified, this in turn helped further work with the idea of player perception as part of the gameplay mechanic. Despite the aesthetically appealing, yet beautifully simplistic art style that The Witness has, development on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 has been effectively abandoned due to “the relatively low system specs”. When the release window started to slide, opportunities arose to take the development of The Witness to the next generation. Despite some people and critics citing the Nintendo Wii U as a next generation platform, Blow has instead chosen to not develop the game for that system, once again saying that the decision is not one of personal choice but one of technological limitations, the Wii U simply cannot keep up.

During the next generation development discussions, Sony was able to provide Blow with system information and development kits. This has resulted in a mutually beneficial timed exclusivity deal which helped bring The Witness to PS4 and aided Sony in their commitment to helping independent developers. Although unrelated to development, Blow has made it perfectly clear that in the past he has had trouble working with Microsoft, specifically with Braid. It was made known by Blow on November 13th of 2013 that the game’s budget was somewhere in the region of $3-4 million.

The Witness developer Jonathan blow has kept details regarding the plot for the game very close to his chest, what we do know is that the player will be taking control of an unnamed character that somehow finds himself alone on an island divided into 10 sections centered around a mountain that represents some ultimate goal. In each of these sections there are various natural features and puzzles that the player must serve before they can continue further into the plot.

As mentioned above, the gameplay of The Witness is entirely central to the plot, and the two mirror each other. The clear goal is the mountain, and in order to gain access to the puzzles within, the player must solve at least 7 out of the 10 puzzles in the world. Upon the completion of that task, a light shining beacon will raise from the ground and shine a beam of light onto the mountain. Although the concept hasn’t been elaborated on (for the purpose of player discovery) the manner in which players will solve the puzzle is reliant on their perceptive abilities as a person.

Apparently the player will need to identify a theme in the puzzle to understand its mechanics and thus complete it. The puzzles will take the form of tracing a path through a maze, and while that may seem simple, the goals is not to try and escape the maze but rather find the correct path of several possibilities that will complete the puzzle. The solution to one such puzzle that was presented at the Penny Arcade Expo showed that in order to find the correct path through the maze, an underground cable that runs through the island must be traced.
