The first title launched in July 2018 for Nintendo Switch before coming to PC, Xbox One, PS4, and PS5. Octopath Traveler 2 followed in 2023, launching for all platforms except Xbox (which arrived in 2024). Both titles received notable acclaim for their role-playing mechanics, as each offered eight playable characters with unique Path Actions.

Octopath Traveler 0 is similar, but this time, you’re creating a character and embarking on a journey to rebuild Wishvale. Along the way, you’ll combat the antagonists responsible for its destruction while collecting seven powerful rings. Unlike previous titles, there are more than 30 characters to recruit, either as party members or town members.

You can field eight units in battle, which adds a more tactical layer to the series, and unleash Ultimates. Wishvale also presents its own unique town-building systems, providing valuable resources if you dedicate enough time. Check out our review for more details.

As announced by Square Enix, the series has hit another major sales milestone.

Taking to Twitter, the publisher announced that the Octopath Traveler series has collectively sold over 5 million units worldwide across all platforms. The company hasn’t provided specific, individual sales figures for the titles, but at last count, the original Octopath Traveler had hit 3 million units sold as of 2022, while last year, Square Enix announced Octopath Traveler 2 had hit 1 million units sold.

Given the critical and commercial success the HD-2D turn-based RPG series has consistently enjoyed, it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing more Octopath Traveler games down the line, but for now, Square Enix’s pipeline has plenty of HD-2D content. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake launched in November, and Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake is due out sometime next year.

Of course, that means that when Mario and Luigi: Brothership was announced, there was no shortage of people wondering who exactly was developing it, though other than revealing that some of the series’ original developers were working on the upcoming RPG, Nintendo did not shed light on what studio is leading the project, as is often the case with the company. 

That information, however, now seems to be out. As shared by @Nintendeal on Twitter, copyright information on Mario and Luigi: Brothership has emerged, and it has revealed that the game has been developed by Acquire. For those unfamiliar, in recent years, the studio has been best known for the Octopath Traveler series. Previously, it also developed Way of the Samurai and Tenchu games.

Interestingly, another recent leak suggested that Mario and Luigi: Brothership was built on Unreal Engine, the same engine Acquire used for the Octopath titles. 

Mario and Luigi: Brothership is due out on November 7 for Switch.

June 12, meanwhile, MeowNature and Gamera Games’ fan-favourite Call of Cthulhu-inspired tabletop RPG Depersonalization will join Game Pass for subscribers on PC, with BlackMill Games’ World War 1 first-person shooter Isonzo following on June 13 for subscribers on console, cloud, and PC. The following day, on June 13, Striking Distance Studios and Krafton’s survival horror game The Callisto Protocol will join the service on all platforms.

Finally, June 18 will bring the day one Game Pass release of Still Wakes the Deep, The Chinese Room’s first-person narrative-driven horror adventure game, or Xbox Series X/S, PC, and cloud.

At the same time, amidst recent age ratings in Taiwan, it looked like the original Octopath Traveler was also set for a PlayStation release at long last. Surprisingly enough, both of those releases have now happened, coming out of nowhere without a prior announcement.

Octopath Traveler is now available on the PlayStation Store for PS5 and PS4 at a price of $59.99, while Octopath Travaler 2 is available on the Xbox Store for Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One at the same price (while also being available via Game Pass). Additionally, Square Enix is also selling a bundle that includes both games on both the PS Store and the Xbox Store, as well as the Switch eShop and Steam, at a price of $74.99.

Both Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 are also available on Nintendo Switch and PC. The former has sold over 3 million units worldwide as of September 2022, while the latter stands at 1 million units sold as of last June.

That, however, could be changing soon. As spotted by Gematsu, the original Octopath Traveler was recently rated for PS5 and PS4 by the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee. Interestingly enough, Octopath Traveler 2 has also been rated for Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, with recent leaks also having claimed that the 2023 sequel will be releasing for Microsoft’s consoles at some point this month.

It’s possible that all series-related announcements will be made together in the coming days, given the timing of the leaks and the ratings in Taiwan. Either way, we’ll be keeping an eye out for new details, so stay tuned for further updates.

Now, the Japanese publisher has confirmed via its official Twitter page that the Octopath Traveler eShop listing is live once again, which means players can once again digitally purchase the game.

The company still hasn’t explained why the game was delisted in the first place, but prior speculation has suggested that it was due to a change in the publisher mentioned on the listing. Upon its original release, Octopath Traveler was published for the Switch by Nintendo, though shortly before its recent delisting, the publisher was changed to Square Enix.

Octopath Traveler is available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC. Its sequel, Octopath Traveler 2, is available on Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, and PC, with Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One versions due out sometime this year.

That includes Naoki Hamaguchi (game director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth), Tomoya Asano (producer of Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, and more), and others. They join a list of executive officers that already includes the likes of Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Yoshida.

Square Enix has now addressed the delisting, and confirmed that it’s only a temporary one, as many had speculated.

Taking to Twitter, the company wrote, “The Nintendo Switch eShop version of Octopath Traveler is temporarily unable to purchase. We are working on this and will update when the game is available to purchase again.”

Square Enix did not provide any reason for why the game was delisted in the first place, but it’s likely due to its listed publisher having changed. Originally launching in 2018 as a Switch exclusive with Nintendo as its publisher, this past December, its listing was updated and the publisher was changed to Square Enix.

How long it’ll be before the game is made available for purchase again remains to be seen.

Octopath Traveler is also available on Xbox One and PC. Its sequel, Octopath Traveler 2, is available on Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, and PC, and is set to launch for Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One this year.

Octopath Traveler’s worldwide shipments and digital sales have now exceeded 3 million units, which is up from the 2.5 million units reported in February last year, suggesting that the RPG continues selling at a decent pace.

Square Enix’s debut HD-2D project originally launched for the Nintendo Switch back in 2018, and has then seen ports and re-releases for several other platforms. Meanwhile, mobile spinoff Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent launched for iOS and Android in Japan in 2020, before releasing in the West earlier this year.

Octopath Traveler is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, and Stadia.

Octopath Traveler 2 is set to launch for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and PS4 on February 24, 2023. It will feature a new setting, a new cast of characters, several new gameplay mechanics, and much more. Read more about it through here.
