Criticizing the Xbox One's lack of self-publishing, Lorne Lanning goes to town on Microsoft.

Oddworld Inhabitants’ Lorne Lanning hasn’t had the best history dealing with Microsoft’s indie developer requirements. Now, with Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty on the way for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, Lanning states that the reason they’re not on the Xbox One is simply because they don’t have a publisher in a conversation with Eurogamer.

“We don’t have a publisher so we’re not officially on the platform, even though we’re compatible, even though we’ll be ready to do it. Period.

“Why do we need a publisher when we self-finance our games, we build our own IP, we manage our own IP and we’ve turned nearly two million units online as indie publishers sold – not free downloads? Why? What’s wrong with us?”

He went on to praise Sony’s openness when it comes to self-publishing games. Without directly referencing Microsoft, Lanning stated that, “There are those who are looking at next quarter’s profits, and maybe one of these big guys looks like that’s all they’re doing right now. If they’re looking at the world that way, you’ve got the obvious, enormous titles.

“They’re going to be the big revenue generators. If the company’s purely about profit, profit and profit, they’re looking at those, and then they’re looking at the little guys saying, ‘oh, they only make this much.’ They’re not interested. There’s one party that’s making it very clear they’re not interested.”

PSN gamers can finally get a taste (all puns intended) of the stellar puzzler.

Just Add Water has recently announced that Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee’s HD remake is finally available on Playstation Network. While the Playstation 3 is currently available, the PS Vita version will be released early next year.

Besides featuring the usual HD treatment – fully remodeled characters, higher resolution textures, improved environmental detail and audio, PS3 designed controls, hidden art – you’ll also see support for 46 Trophies and a Platinum rating. That’s discounting the classic puzzle gameplay you get that makes this one of the best games of all-time.

While we’re all well and happy for Just Add Water, are we the only ones to notice the absence of an Xbox 360 version? Well considering the trouble that the developer has had with Microsoft Games Studio in the past – which centered on trying to get Stranger’s Wrath HD released for the system – they still seem to be on neutral terms as Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee New ‘n’ Tasty readies for release.

Stewart Gilray outlines the troubles they had trying to get an HD version of the game onto Microsoft's console (to no avail).

You gotta love Microsoft. Sometimes, they can make your life a living nightmare if you don’t have the clout, as they did with Just Add Water when they wanted to release Stranger’s Wrath HD on the Xbox 360.

After applying for the paperwork of getting it on the console and waiting for 9 weeks – after which they were refused, because “it’s been on the console before – they were then told it could be released via Games on Demand.

CEO Stewart Gilray stated, “There were a few things in that we didn’t adhere to: minimum price was $20. Things like that which kind of were surprising – they knew we were only charging $15 on PS3, why charge Xbox fans more? And other things like HD graphics, yeah we’re doing that – and gamerscore, yeah, we’re doing that. We already know the things like that, the things they were throwing up in our way were ridiculous.”

After trying again six months later, more terms and conditions came up. “1. We want simultaneous release with PS3.’ Well, we’ve been talking to them for 15 months: you had a perfect chance to get us on your platform, ’2. Get a minimum Metacritic score of 80.’ Xbox was 88 and PS3 was 83 [At that point.], ’3. Sell 1 million units at retail.’ Which I’ve since found out isn’t the case for Games on Demand anymore. So there’s nothing that they’ve thrown up towards us that they usually would to stop people getting on their platform. They just don’t want us on their platform as far as I can tell.”

Despite this, “New ‘N Tasty [the Abe’s Odyssee remake] has been approved for 360…They approved us very quickly indeed on that. Which is why I’m frustrated that they didn’t put Stranger on there, we’ve even tried putting Stranger on there via this third party publisher, and they still turned around and said no. It really is bemusing, I would say.”

What to say rather than lifting your hands in a funny way and coolly saying “Because Microsoft?”

Return to Oddworld with our favourite do-good, farting hero.

Count on Abe did the Oddworld Inhabitants, as veteran and Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray was on stage at Eurogamer Expo 2012 to demonstrate the remake of Oddworld” Abe’s Oddysee. The full title has been, as the result of a competition for the same, and it’s now being called Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee – New ‘n’ Tasty.

Our current favourite person, Lorne Lanning, founder and co-owner of Oddworld Inhabitants stated: “Oddworld Inhabitants is always overwhelmed by the fan dedication to Abe and the games and hope to keep them involved in the creative process for future games. We are all excited about giving a new generation of gamers the opportunity to play Abe’s Oddysee the way they deserve.”

Gameplay features will include:

· Fully 3D rendered environments with ‘2.5D’ gameplay;
· Redesigned levels to take advantage of the new engine;
· Rerecorded sounds and voices, including some surprises; and
· Full integration with gaming platforms.

Along with a launch on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in the fourth quarter of 2013, you look to acquire the game Playstation Vita and PC, with the latter due sometime after.
