Major game streaming company closes down after nearly 12 years.

One of the oldest innovators of online game streaming OnLive will be shutting down later this month and selling its assets to Sony, which already owns Gaikai (which later formed the foundation for PlayStation Now.

The company stated that, “Following the termination of the company’s services and related products, OnLive will engage in an orderly wind-down of the company and cease operations.” OnLive will remain active till April 30th and those who happened to subscribe after March 28th will given refunds. Head to the official FAQ here for more details.

Sony is turning into quite the game-streaming powerhouse, given that Gaikai was OnLive’s major competition. The assets and IP acquired by Sony include “substantial innovations in cloud gaming”. Till will tell how this goes into improving PlayStation Now.

What are your thoughts on the closure of OnLive? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned for further updates on what Sony does with the assets acquired.

By HALF!

OnLive recently launched CloudLift, a service that allows you to sync your Steam account with your OnLive account and then share cloud saves between the two. This allows you to play your games from where you left them even on services that did not previously support those games, such as TVs, Macs, Android consoles and laptops.

The monthly subscription for this rather nifty service was £9.99/$14.99- which sounds reasonable enough. But it seems like OnLive really wants to win its fans over.

OnLive has slashed the subscription rates of the CloudLift services and brought them down by half, which means that the monthly subscription now costs £9.99/$14.99. The PlayPack subscription plan continues to be offered at £6.99/$9.99, but we can foresee the number of subscriptions for the CloudLift services going up by a great margin in the near future with the subscription fees having been brought down by half.

If it seemed like OnLive was dead, then the recent launch of CloudLift should eliminate evidence to the same. The new cloud gaming service is offering consumers the ability to play any PC game they’ve downloaded from digital stores like Steam on pretty much any device.

This means you can play the supported games – which include Saints Row IV, Batman: Arkham Origins and Type:Rider – on your tablet, Mac, ultrabook, Google TV, you name it without any problems. You’ll need to subscribe at $15/£9.99 per month and then sync said PC games to your OnLive account but from there, it’s smooth sailing. You can even play on one device and continue where you left off on another, thanks to Cloud saves.

OnLive will also begin selling download codes for different games, which also grant a 7 day trial for CloudLift. It’ll be interesting to see where it goes but if the game catalog expands, it could be a pretty significant step forward. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

With the magic of Google TV, OnLive and LG look to bring blockbuster gaming to TV screens everywhere.

OnLive and LG will be taking to CES showcase the wonders of cloud gaming with LG’s Smart TV with Google TV (G3 Series) tech at this year’s CES happening from January 8th to 11th in Las Vegas.

With Google TV platform, the G3 Series’ speedy dual-core chipset and supposedly user-friendly interface, OnLive is looking to make console-quality games instantly accessible to TV viewers, without the need of a console or external disc media.

Considering they currently command a catalog of 300+ from more than 80 publishers, with every genre and market segment accounted for, it’s safe to say they mean business.

OnLive Chairman Gary Lauder states, “Our partnership with LG demonstrates the exciting future for cloud gaming as an integrated offering for connected TVs. OnLive’s proven gaming on-demand technology enables consumers to enjoy a vast catalog of console-quality games, with no additional hardware necessary beyond an OnLive controller and LG’s sophisticated and feature-rich Google TV.”

Georg Rasinski, Director of Home Entertainment Brand Management, LG Electronics USA said, “LG’s dual-core performance Google TVs, coupled with OnLive’s innovative games-on-demand service, makes access to the latest videogame entertainment quicker and easier than ever before. By integrating cloud gaming into our powerful G2 series TVs, the entertainment possibilities for consumers are virtually limitless.”

The latest in the live-action series of videos looks at the man who "closed the doors".

Though not an official sequel to the best selling novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, 4A Games’ Metro: Last Light does attempt to continue the story of the post-apocalyptic first person shooter set in Russia, where mutants roam the streets and the only safe refuge are the miles of underground metro tunnels in the city. And if these live-action “Survivor Series” videos are any indication, they’re doing a bang-up job.

Our attention this time is drawn to a former Commander, who is beaten and tortured beneath the surface of a ravaged metro station. Flashbacks and cutaways indicate that the Commander was the one who gave the order to “close the doors” to the station, preventing any remaining survivors from entering. And no, they didn’t live happily ever after.

It remains to be seen how all of these characters will impact the main experience but it does help flesh out the game world that much more. Metro: Last Light is due to release in March 2013 for Xbox 360, PC, PS3 and OnLive.

Worth peanuts.

It’s no secret that Onlive were desperate to be bought out by a gaming company for more than $1 billion. Reports have been coming in steadily that the company was highly mismanaged and after the sale of Gaikai their market value had dropped a lot since no one was interested in them.

Microsoft revealed that they have the capacity for their own cloud services and do not need an external company to do the needful. We know Nintendo won’t buy them, and Sony has already purchased Gaikai for $380 million.

While Onlive was worth more than Gaikai, the company has seen a tremendous collapse and its assets have been reportedly sold for $4.8 million. It’s like the Digg situation when Google offered them $200 million at their prime and are worth peanuts now.

Insolvency Services Group CEO Joel Weinberg has revealed that (via Mercury News) that they have purchased Onlive’s assets for $4.8 million. If they didn’t do it Onlive would have collapsed.

He said: “Had the sale to the buyer not taken place, the assignee would have been left with inadequate capital to fund the significant costs to preserve and market OnLive’s patents and other intellectual property, thus greatly reducing expected recoveries essentially to those of a forced piecemeal auction.”

Steve Perlman, the founder and CEO of OnLive, has left the company after the company was recently bought by Investment firm, Lauder Group.

“Steve has created an extraordinary company that no one else could have created. He is a unique entrepreneur and deserves his legendary status in Silicon Valley as a creator of groundbreaking companies,” said the chairman of the newly formed company, Gary Lauder.

It is unclear whether he was fired or left on his own accord, but it seems like it’s the former. Earlier it was rumoured that he wouldn’t leave the company, but looks like that was obviously fake.

“The new OnLive is emerging with greater financial security and a brighter outlook on the future. OnLive is now positioned to execute against longer-term projects with our breakthrough technology, products and services. I spent my first week with OnLive listening, to gather people’s thoughts and suggestions. It’s an impressive group, and I am even more convinced that this company is poised for greatness,” Lauder added.

Former employees of the cloud computing firm invited to work on XBox/Kinect projects.

OnLive hasn’t been seeing the sunniest of days, with business troubles and lay-offs. The cloud computing company’s loss however may just be Microsoft’s gain.

Through Eventbrite, Microsoft put out the call for former OnLive devs to enjoy greener pastures. The message on their site states:

“We are eager to speak to individuals and teams affected by the OnLive transition. With the stunning success of Xbox/Kinect and the accelerated growth of this business, we are looking to add key players who want to make a real impact in creating groundbreaking new products and services.”

Given that Microsoft was interested in acquiring OnLive as far back as 2010, it’s no surprise they’d be interested in it the remnants of it’s legacy. Positions for the above jobs are open in both Mountain View and Redmond, Washington.

Either way, it looks like Sony may have some competition with it’s Gaikai acquisition in the very near future.

In Darksiders II players face an amazing action-adventure game nearly four times the size of its predecessor. Faster gameplay, deep skill trees and a new loot system all build upon the strengths of the original, allowing players a wide variety of character development and customization options.

There have been plenty of rumours about OnLive and their struggles to keep the company afloat. Recently news spread out that Onlive was getting bought out by another company and has fired a large amount of staff, which was denied by various people at OnLive, but now we finally have a definite answer as to the future of the company.

OnLive has been bought out by a newly-formed company whose name is yet to be disclosed, here’s the statement they released to Polygon.

“We can now confirm that the assets of OnLive, Inc. have been acquired into a newly-formed company and is backed by substantial funding, and which will continue to operate the OnLive Game and Desktop services, as well as support all of OnLive’s apps and devices, as well as game, productivity and enterprise partnerships,” the statement read.

“The new company is hiring a large percentage of OnLive, Inc.’s staff across all departments and plans to continue to hire substantially more people, including additional OnLive employees. All previously announced products and services, including those in the works, will continue and there is no expected interruption of any OnLive services.

“We apologize that we were unable to comment on this transaction until it completed, and were limited to reporting on news related to OnLive’s businesses. Now that the transaction is complete, we are able to make this statement.”

One good thing to come out of this is that the new company is hiring a lot of old staff and there isn’t any expected interruption of any OnLive services.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
