After tearing it up on the App Store, Overhaul Games’s mobile port of Bioware’s all-time classic, AD&D RPG Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is now available for Android via the Google Play Store. You’ll take on a quest in the Forgotten Realms, traversing the Sword Coast expansion and even tackling the stand-alone Black Pits. The game features improved visuals and a revamped interface for touch users.

It retails for $9.99 and you purchase additional content within the game. You’ll need an Android 4.0 or higher device in order to run it, but from there, you’ll have support for both your tablet, regular smartphone, stylus-equipped phablet and so on.

Currently, there are multiplayer match-making abilities which are in the beta phase, along with a new renderer. There’s also an increased level cap over the original game to allow for easier play and you can even access all the new features from Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn.

After many, many delays, much-awaited Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Edition is now available for iOS albeit for the iPad only. You can pick it up on the Apple App Store for $14.99, and it includes the original game Shadows of Amn along with the the Throne of Bhaal expansion.

But that’s not all – you’ll also receive four new party members with new story quests associated with each to further add to the replay value. If that weren’t enough, you also get The Black Pits 2: Gladiators of Thay, which presents an arena challenge for your party to conquer.

Already available on the PC and Mac OS X, also after many delays, distributor Beamdog faced contractual issues with publisher Atari that prevented the game’s release. Those issues have since been resolved and now the game is freely available for all intended platforms (though we still wait for that elusive Android version). Have you played the game yet? Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition recently got released for the PC, and it was a great game too, seeing as the game it is a remake of was an excellent game to begin with. Surprisingly enough, developers Overhaul Games were, at one point, also considering bringing the game to the PS3 as well.

Unfortunately though, the user interface and the all over structure of the game proved to be too complex for a console, and Overhaul, who were in talks with Sony, decided to scrap the project.

Trent Oster, who worked on Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition as a Creative Director, said on his Twitter account: “We talked with Sony about #BGEE for #PS3. In the end, the rework to keep the fun and fix the control / UI for console was just too much.”

Well, seeing as games like Dragon Age: Origins have seen the light of the day on the PS3 and the Xbox 360, I’m sure they could have done something about it, but it’s a pity that console audiences can’t play Baldur’s Gate, because it sure is one hell of a game.

The reason? It’s not quite finished.

Overhaul president Trent Oster elucidated exactly why in the game’s forums: “Executing on our plan to make the best Baldur’s Gate possible and responding to that overwhelming feedback, we’ve added new characters, areas, and story, creating many new hours of gameplay. Yet the suggestions, fixes, and translations continue, and more volunteers keep joining.”

“After recently reviewing the game and then consulting with our partners, we’ve decided to ensure that Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is the best possible product on launch. Thus, we have pushed back the release date of the game. Our plan is to release in November, 2012,” said Oster.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If it means a better game as a result, why not? We just hope that it’s ambition doesn’t exceed it’s reach.

Distributed by Beamdog and published by Atari, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is a remake of the original Baldur’s Gate featuring the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion. It runs of an advanced version of the Infinity engine and is packed with lots of new gameplay. This includes:

New Characters: Dorn Il-Khan, Neera the Wild Mage, Rasaad yn Bashir
New player character voice sets
Native support for high resolution, widescreen displays
400 improvements to the original game
Improved multiplayer support, with connectivity between all platforms

It’ll be available for download directly from Beamdog’s site, and on the Mac App store for iOS and Mac OS.

Developers Overhaul Games have announced that the recently announced remake of the BioWare PC RPG classic, Baldur’s Gate, will be making its way to the iPad as well as the PC.

It was officially announced via the game’s website that Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition will be available for download on the iPad via the App Store this Summer. The game will be developed on an updated version of Baldur’s Gate 2’s Infinity Engine and will have all the content the PC version will have.

It is not yet announced, however, whether Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Edition will also be released on the iPad. However, IGN has some early hands-on footage and screens of the game running on an iPad. Have a look. The iPad version of the game will apparently have a much better interface to make the tons of in-game menus more accessible and manageable using the device’s touch screen.
