Additionally, the company has at least another two unknown reboots in the works, it's been claimed.

At The Game Awards last month, Sega announced that it was working on reboots for five of its classic franchises in Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and Golden Axe, and ended the bumper trailer with a tease of more similar projects coming in the future. Now, a report published by Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson has potentially revealed more details on those projects in particular.

According to Henderson, between 2020 and 2021, Sega greenlit as many as 10 reboots for its classic franchises as part of its “Super Game” initiative, of which it revealed five at The Game Awards. Of the remaining five, Henderson claims that three are Panzer Dragoon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Sakura Wars. All three are allegedly in the early stages of development.

Panzer Dragoon’s last mainline release was Panzer Dragoon Orta all the way back in 2002, though we did get Panzer Dragoo Remake, which was developed by MegaPixel Studio and published by Forever Entertainment, in 2020.

Sakura Wars is a more curious case, having already received a soft reboot not that long ago, in 2019. Meanwhile, Neon Genesis Evangelion is, of course, not a Sega franchise, though it would seem the company has picked up the license to developer a major AAA game based on it.

Henderson is unsure what the remaining two of then ten aforementioned projects are, but speculates that they could be any of the eight additional trademarks that were recently filed by Sega, those being Alex Kidd, After Burner, House of the Dead, Outrun, Super Monkey Ball, Altered Beast Eternal, Champions, and Kid Chameleon.

Following its announcement of five classic revivals last month, Sega also revealed further brief details on the projects, confirming that Jet Set Radio will be open world and revealing details on Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, and Golden Axe, while also confirming the next Streets of Rage game’s title as Streets of Rage Revolution.

Panzer Dragoon creator Yukio Futatsugi also keen to work with Nintendo again.

Despite being out of the spotlight since releasing Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crimson Dragon developer Grounding has been happy working with Microsoft. Panzer Dragoon creator Yukio Futatsugi spoke to Siliconera during the Tokyo Game Show about also working with smartphones and how he’s interested in working with Nintendo again.

“My personal interest is in smartphones. They’re gradually becoming capable of having visuals like this. We’ve worked on a number of mobile games so far, and I’m really interested in using the network aspect to make a more interesting game. Perhaps we’ll work with Nintendo again, since we have a good relationship with them…and naturally, Microsoft has been great to us. We want to do a lot of different things, so I guess we’re kind of a greedy company.”

Crimson Dragon will be launching on the Xbox One when the console releases worldwide on November 22nd. It will be heading to Japan in early 2014.

'All I can really do is finish it.'

The much awaited spiritual successor to the Panzer Dragoon series will soon be upon us. Originally slated to release in June of last year, Crimson Dragon was delayed for an indefinite amount of time. But the developer asks us to hold our breath just a bit longer.

“The game has been delayed and I know people are waiting for it, but it is definitely moving ahead,” lead designer Yukio Futatsugi told Eurogamer.

“Microsoft will announce it when they’re ready.”

Futatsugi couldn’t specify how far away we are from the game’s release, “But it’s really not far off.”

“I’m working hard to make sure no one says, ‘The old one was better.’ But Panzer is Sega’s IP and this game will be different from that. The design concept of the dragons and the environments is very different,” he further added.

“All I can really do is finish it. Anyway, games are made differently these days, so I hope people will see this as the sort of game Panzer Dragoon might have been if it had been made today.”

For the unfamiliar, Crimson Dragon is a Kinect exclusive on-rails shooter whose development team consists of members who had worked on the Panzer Dragoon series, with he creator of the Panzer Dragoon series. Yukio Ftatsugi, leading the way. If there was any game that could make us dust off our Kinect again, it would have to be this. Be sure to check back for more updates.

Sadly, Moebius (a.k.a Jean Giraud) passed away this weekend. His position in the history of the graphic novel is pretty much cemented, but Jean Giraud also held sway over the world of computer games…

Directly: He drew the cover art for 1995’s Fade to Black, worked as Character Designer on the adventure game Pilgrim: Faith as a Weapon and, alongside drawing the Japanese cover art for the first Panzer Dragoon, helped forge the visual identity of the entire Panzer Dragoon series.

Indirectly, it should not be underestimated how much of Moebius’ film work subtly permeated the world of computer games: He provided concept designs and story boards for Alien, Tron, The Fifth Element and The Abyss. It should also be noted that Ridley Scott and Hayo Miyazaki have also acknowledged Moebius’ influence – Ridley Scott surrounded himself with Moebius comics during Blade Runner‘s production and Myazaki admitted to directing Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind under the influence of Moebius. Just think of any video games influenced by those films/artists and a little bit of Moebius might well have slipped in there too.

Big thanks to Luke Plunkett’s Kotaku article on Moebius
