These are the best games of 2024 you didn't play.

Every year there are games released with don’t seem to garner their share of the limelight as much as they deserve. There’re underrated by some degree, and in large part it’s not totally known why they don’t catch on. The fifteen titles included in this rundown exemplify a feeling of underratedness, but for the purposes of this feature we’re not just talking games that haven’t reviewed as well as they should. Games that’re overshadowed, overlooked, or underplayed have also been considered.

Nine Sols

You may be asking: if Nine Sols sold well, hit all consoles after a successful PC launch, and garnered two nominations at the upcoming Indie Game Awards, is it genuinely underrated? Well, aside from a convoluted story told via overabundance of dialogue, Nine Sols is the Hollow Knight sequel we’ve been waiting for. Its evocative world with cyberpunk-adjacent tech provides the perfect playground for exploration and discovery, but – most importantly – its robust combat demanding a clever mix of parrying, combos, and powerups should be elevating Nine Sols above what its already achieved. If you’re waiting for Silksong, play Nine Sols.

These overlooked titles are well worth a look.

2024 may not be as packed as last year was, but halfway through the year, we’ve still already had a deluge of excellent new games, to the extent that many have, as is often the case, passed under the radar for a great many people. Here, we’re going to shine the spotlight on a few such smaller or relatively less mainstream titles that deserve to have more eyes on them.

ANIMAL WELL

Indie Metroidvanias are a dime a dozen these days, but Animal Well manages to stand out from the crowd nonetheless. On top of incredible level design, endlessly satisfying exploration, and ingeniously designed puzzles, Animal Well also boasts incredible art design and visuals. All of it comes together in one of the richest and most engaging Metroidvanias we’ve played in recent years.

Evening Star and Private Division's 3D platformer was shadow-dropped at Nintendo's recent Partner Direct presentation.

When it was first announced last June, Penny’s Big Breakaway instantly caught attention. Coming from the team that developed Sonic Mania and promising kinetic 3D platforming, the game has been on quite a few radars since its reveal, and at the recent Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, not only did it show up with another look, it even got a surprise release.

That’s right, developer Evening Star and publisher Private Division have shadow-dropped Penny’s Big Breakaway. Along with the announcement, a new gameplay trailer was also showcased at the aforementioned Direct, offering more glimpses of the game’s power ups and the temporary transformations you’ll make use of, the unique and colourful worlds you’ll be exploring, its Story Mode and Time Attack Mode, and more. You can check out the trailer below.

Penny’s Big Breakaway is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game is being sold at a price of $29.99.
