Development lead Mark Rubin talks "cinema-quality assets" to be used in Ghosts.

Call of Duty: Ghosts – the next game in the series from Infinity Ward that sees an America in ruins, a new military outfit, doggies and fish that swim away from the player – has been the focus of much discussion. A lot of this has been about the graphics about the game. Infinity Ward executive producer and development lead for Ghosts, Mark Rubin recently spoke to Develop-Online about the game’s graphics.

“It’s beyond PC right now. It is these really big cinema-quality assets. And what we can then do is pull them down onto the various platforms. That way the assets are always the best that they can be for that platform. So you never have an average, you have the best for PC, the best for current-gen, the best for next-gen.

“We are bringing into gaming a lot of little techniques and things that these guys have been doing in Hollywood for many years now.”

One of those techniques is something called “SubD”, which according to Rubin “is something Pixar developed, and Hollywood has been using it for years for feature film. Those guys have been using it in the pre-rendered sense, so it’s not real-time. But we developed it and brought it into the game so it is working in real-time. It has a pretty material effect on the way the game looks, and that’s the benefit of bringing these things in.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be showcased this week at E3 2013 and is set to release on November 5th for Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC.

The "grimsical" title has been revealed with new artwork.

According to EDGE, five Pixar artists have joined together to form the new Steel Wool Studios. Their first game will be FlyHunter, which will release this year under Ripstone.

The artists in question are Sequoia Blankenship, Andrew Dayton, Jonathan Hoffman, Joshua Qualtieri and Jason Topolski. They’ve worked on films like Brave, The Incredibles and Toy Story, and make up more than 60 years of combined experience.

Which can be seen in the art work for the game, that carried the signature swagger and cartoonish awesomeness of Pixar. Andrew Dayton stated that, “We have an internal phrase that we use to describe our style: ‘Grimsical’. It’s our fundamental principle as a company. We create worlds that are funny and whimsical but dipped in gritty tones.”

Sounds like a good approach. Will FlyHunter be coming out on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets with iOS and Android or will it be a digital download title? Stayed tuned for more details.

Pixar and Disney powers, activate!

Remember how we talked Disney wanting to get into social gaming when it wasn’t busy usurping major film studios? Well, the House that the Mouse built Disney Interactive has stated to Joystiq that it will present a new “gaming initative” called Disney Infinity on Janunary 15th. This was indicated by the holographic invitation card that Joystiq had received which contains both the Infinity logo and the Magical Kingdom itself.

The event will have Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants and Disney/Pixar CCO John Lasseter speaking. So take that to mean that it’s a big enough deal. Could this be the “Toy Box” project that Disney CEO Robert Iger talked about back in October which would see Disney and Pixar characters interacting in games across different consoles? Maybe, maybe not.

As of now, there’s nothing to do but wait till next month and see what the two behemoths have in store. One thing’s for sure: you do not want to mess with the collective might of both studios.

Check out the accolade video for Cars 2, where Disney Interactive shows people how much awards and good scores the game got. The game will be released this year for the Nintendo 3DS.

“It’s very rewarding to see how members of the media have jumped behind the wheel to become agents of C.H.R.O.M.E in support of Cars 2: The Video Game,” said John Blackburn, vice president and general manager of Avalanche Software.

“We’re very proud of the work we have done with Pixar on this title and the way media are acknowledging Disney Interactive Studios as a leader in family video game entertainment. It’s great to see the game recognized in such an outstanding manner,” he added.

Here are some of the reviews they quoted:

“If you’re into speed, blowing things up and battling your mates then this amazing game is for you!” – Toxic 91%

“Cars 2 is a great multiplayer game that rivals Mario Kart.” – IGN 8.0 out of 10

“Cars 2 provides family fun right off the starting grid.” – Sunday Mirror 4/5

Are you going to buy the game? Tell us in the comments section.
