What does Sony have in store for Gamescom?

Like a dead horse, we’ll forever beat on the fact that Microsoft flailed with its presentation at Gamescom 2017. And while Sony won’t have its own show, it apparently has something “new” to reveal. That’s according to the latest tweet from PlayStation Europe, which you can view below. It’s essentially a GIF of something covered up by a red sheet with several spotlights focused on it.

We do know that once the show floor opens for Gamescom attendees, Sony will have titles like Detroit: Become Human and Gran Turismo Sport available to play. VR titles could also be available though there’s no confirmation on which games in particular. Whether Spider-Man, Days Gone, Knack 2 or even The Last of Us: Part 2 will be available on hand remains to be seen as well.

In the meantime, Electronic Arts will be hosting its Gamescom press conference while Blizzard will also go live at 9:30 AM PT. Stay tuned for more updates from Gamescom 2017 as the week rolls on.

In an interview with CVG, PlayStation Europe CEO Jim Ryan thinks that respite the upsurge in the digital market, physical disks will remain the primary source of games distribution for at least the next five years, as well as increasing hybridity between the two models.

Ryan told CVG: “It’s interesting because previously the whole debate took a very binary approach. You either bought a game in a shop or online. But what we’re now starting to see the business adopt hybrid models where the retailer is able to play a really legitimate and substantial role in the digital value chain.

Also I would say, and certainly for the next five years, that disc-based distribution is going to be the norm.”

Ryan then went on to comment on the wildly varying average download speeds across Europe, suggesting the infrastructure for digital-only simply isn’t there yet: “If you take Uncharted 3’s file size, and look at the average internet speeds people have in Southern Europe, it would take about two days to download it. So discs are going to be around for some time yet.”
