Updates for Asian territories to cease in March 2014.

As an interactive social media hub of sorts, PlayStation Home allowed players to create avatars and interact with each other in a sort of virtual online world. For all the flak that its received, there are still plenty of Home users out there. Regardless, Sony has announced that updates Home in Japan will cease in September. It has also revealed that the content will end for all Asian territories in March 2014.

Because we couldn’t get enough of it as it is. However, markets where Home does see its fair share of users will remain unaffected, as the US and Europe will still receive updates. Considering that there has been some clamouring for Home on the PlayStation 4, it remains to be seen whether this will affect chances of the same. Will it be long before Home is phased out in the West as well? Time will tell.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 launches on November 15th in the US and November 29th in Europe.

In short, Pottermore for PS Home.

Essentially, you’ll be able to explore the world of Harry Potter, which includes famous locations such as Diagon Alley, the Hogwarts Express and we’re assuming the wizardry school itself since you even get your own set of school robes when you enlist. No word on if the characters from the Casual Vacancy will make an appearance though.

Pottermore CEO Charlie Redmayne stated that, “Pottermore reaches across multiple digital platforms, and our ongoing partnership with Sony has allowed us to forge this exciting connection with Playstation Home, creating the most immersive experience possible within that space and giving users wonderful new ways to explore locations from the Harry Potter stories.”

If you head here, you can link your PSN ID for more interactive content and spaces such as Pottermore trading cards.

Sony today announced that the new design of the virtual world of PlayStation Home fwill be available from today. The redesign includes all-new exclusive gaming districts and social content themed to fit your preferences.

“The new revamp of PlayStation Home puts you right at the centre of a world of games”, said Darren Cairns, Head of Online Marketing at SCEE. “We now have multiple spaces, games and activities themed around the types of games you know and love on your PS3 – and it’s free to join in and have a look around. PlayStation Home provides a completely unique way to meet your PlayStation Network friends and play, interact or simply hang out with them.”

The four new districts are:

Action: With a gritty, urban aesthetic, the Action district is the perfect destination for players looking for action, shooter and horror games. Check out free-to-play game Bootlegger 29 that brings real time first person shooter gameplay to an authentic Prohibition-era environment. Team up with other users to have your own adventures for free!

Sportswalk: Experience the collective atmosphere and feel of a major sporting event with sports-themed games, special features, sports quizzes and trivia. Share your latest sporting achievements with friends over a game of pool, darts, or even drop into the poker lounge and see if you’ve got the nerve to beat your opponents and leave with your chips stacked high.

Adventure: Immerse yourself in a beachfront jungle full of sights to see and adventure-themed games to discover throughout Adventure district. Themed around blockbuster title Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception, users can experience a Nathan Drake-style adventure, with their very own avatar.

Indie Park: The place to go to check out a huge range of bite-size games showcased by a variety of different indie developers. This zone offers a unique opportunity for up and coming developers to show off their talent and for users to experience their innovation first hand.

As well as these four gaming districts, the new design of PlayStation Home includes fresh spaces where players can meet up and interact, including The Boardwalk, have a go at playing Cogs, or hanging out in Home Square (which has also had a makeover).

On January 27th you will be able to decorate your home space Killzone 3 style. I mean who needs a nice clean home space to log on to when you have an alien invaded Central Plaza that looks like hell. Right? But it all seriousness, I think it’s pretty cool and as soon as it available I’m going to have to check it out. Oh and the best part in you can actually pre-order your copy of Killzone 3 from Amazon.com from a kiosk in the midst of the flaming rubble over there somewhere that can get you.

Limited edition Killzone 3 jetpack for your HOME avatar, not available anywhere else

Unlock and Load Pack, instant access to three Unlock Points to use on the weapon or ability of your choice in Killzone 3 multiplayer

Retro Map Pack, featuring two of the most popular maps from Killzone 2

Update, you can also play a first-person shooter in the plaza, shoot down Helghast airships, take out ground infantry, and deliver supplies to earn points good towards unlocking items in Killzone 3 multiplayer. Um.. yeah.. I;m definitely getting this. Killzone 3 comes out February 22nd along with the Son Sharpshooter gun peripheral, there are other out there, but you are going to want you PS Move for this baby as well a a gun peripheral.

According to the director of Playstation Home, Jack Buser, PlayStation Home is a success and is something they are very proud of.

“I think it takes some time as the industry as a whole, whether that be consumers or whether that be the media, to start to shift their focus to these new types of platforms and see how people are actually spending their time with the console and with gaming in general,” he said during an interview with Gamasutra.

“I think we are part of that evolution, part of that conversation.” he added.

Buser later on said that there are over 100 games, an average user session of 70 minutes, 50 virtual Home spaces, and 85% of the users have been to all spaces. Buser also said that the service currently has over 14 million users since launch.

Buser also talked about their profits, and if Home is making any money.

“We haven’t talked too much about the platform itself, but what we have said is that every mature virtual item we have ever created has been profitable,” says Buser.

“We’ve released over 5,000 virtual items on the platform, and we know that once those items reach maturity, they are profitable. So you see us creating a tremendous amount of virtual items, because it is such a high margin business for us to be in.”

“It is a very good business model for PlayStation, and quite profitable, I like to say it’s one of the highest-margin businesses in the games industry.” he continued.

Do you use Home? let us know in the comments below.
