Michail Katkoff, managing director at Savage Game Studios, announces he's leaving the company, which was acquired by PlayStation in 2022.

PlayStation Mobile has been going through some changes of late with key departures and recruitments, and another leading figure has now departed. Michail Katkoff, managing director at mobile game developer Savage Game Studios, has announced his departure from the company on LinkedIn.

“It’s time for me to say thank you and goodbye to the lovely people at Savage Game Studios,” Katkoff wrote. “I’d like to believe I’ve done my fair part in taking the company from zero to one. Now I’m eager to watch from the side as Nadjim and Mike take it from one to one hundred. In the same breath, I wish nothing but the best to Olivier C. and Kris Davis who are leading PlayStation’s charge onto mobile. Can’t wait to play all the amazing games from all the fantastic developers!”

Savage Game Studios was established in 2020 by a number of mobile game dev veterans, before being acquired by PlayStation last year. The studio is currently working on a new unannounced AAA mobile live service action game, presumably based on one of PlayStation’s established franchises.

Last month, it was reported that PlayStation Mobile head Nicola Sebastiani had left the company. Not long afterward, it was confirmed that he had been replaced by two new co-heads of the division in Kris Davis and Olivier Courtemanche.

Kabam's Kris Davis and Meta's Olivier Courtemanche are the new co-heads of PlayStation Mobile, following Nicola Sebastiani's recent departure.

It was less than two years ago that Sony revealed that it had recruited former Apple man Nicola Sebastiani as the head of its nascent PlayStation Mobile division, though just recently, it was confirmed that Sebastiani had left the company to “pursue a new, undisclosed opportunity”. In the aftermath of his departure, it seems Sony has already got his replacements in place.

That’s right- replacements. Plural. As spotted by @Zuby_Tech on Twitter, the LinkedIn pages of Kris Davis and Olivier Courtemanche have revealed that the duo have been chosen by Sony to be the new co-heads of PlayStation Mobile.

Both Davis and Courtemanche have been at Sony for a little over a year, and until recently, both were serving as senior directors of the PlayStation Mobile division. Prior to their roles at Sony, Davis was at Kabam for six years, while Courtemanche spent a little under a year at Meta, and six years at Zynga before that.

Though things have been fairly quite on the PlayStation Mobile front, Sony has expressed on a number of occasions that it intends to greatly expand its presence in the space. Last year, it acquired mobile developer Savage Game Studios, which is currently working on PlayStation Mobile’s first AAA live service game.

Nicola Sebastiani, who was recruited to head up the PlayStation Mobile division in October 2021, has reportedly left Sony.

PlayStation’s attempts to expand its presence beyond the gaming space have been far-reaching in recent years, and while the steps being taken have been tangible and clear to see when it comes to things like PC releases, live service games, and TV and film adaptations, where PlayStation’s mobile gaming efforts are concerned, we’re yet to see the company take similar steps.

One major step forward came when Sony announced that it had hired former Apple man Nicola Sebastiani to head up their PlayStation Mobile division, though it seems there’s been a setback there as well. As reported by MobileGamer.biz, Sebastiani has left the company, and is no longer leading the mobile division. As per the report, he has left the company to “pursue a new, undisclosed opportunity”.

Back in early 2021, Sony said that it was looking to bring “PlayStation’s most popular franchises” to mobile devices, with the company intending to to expand its audience to “millions of gamers” beyond the confines of consoles.

Last year, as part of its continuing mobile efforts, Sony acquired Savage Game Studios. The mobile team is working on “a new unannounced AAA mobile live service action game.”

Published recently by SIE's Japan division, the patent features images of two DualShock 4-like grips that attach to either side of one's phone.

Sony hasn’t been overtly publicizing plans for mobile gaming but it has been making some key strategic moves. This includes hiring former Apple Arcade head Nicola Sebastiani to head up PlayStation Mobile. A job listing from April 2021 also indicated that the company wanted to expand its “game development from consoles and PCs to mobile and Live Services with a focus on successfully adapting PlayStation’s most popular franchises for mobile.”

It seems that even more significant strides are being made. A patent for a controller, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Japan division recently and spotted by VGC, seems to point towards mobile gaming usage. It’s essentially two grips akin to the DualShock 4 with the mobile device in the middle. Images can be seen below though they don’t include “a shaft portion that can be tilted by the user, and detect the tilting direction and tilting amount of the shaft portion” as per the patent.

As such, PlayStation controllers can already be connected to mobile devices using Bluetooth and there are various third party devices for playing Xbox titles on mobile (courtesy of the cloud). This seems to be a natural extension of the same though there’s no telling just how far along the company’s mobile plans currently are. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime, as always.

The Chinese Room’s first person adventure title Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is finally available on Steam. PC players can pick it up for $19.99.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is about residents of a small English village going missing and the player trying to decipher the reasons why. Various lights have popped up all over town that can be interacted with to learn more.

The game was originally exclusive to the PS4 when it released in August 2015. PC version has been in development since September. Leaks of the same emerged later and the developer confirmed the news itself recently. The PC release is handled by PlayStation Mobile and follows critical acclaim for the PS4 version.

The Chinese Room is also busy developing a new title in Total Dark which will be heading to PC. It’s classified as an “isometric systems-driven adventure” and your guess is as good as ours as to what that means.

Another Vita initiative bites the dust.

PlayStation Mobile, for those of you who might have forgotten, was the backend development infrastructure, and frontend storefront, for independent and major game developers to bring games that they develop for Android devices on to Sony’s PlayStation Vita portable. It was meant to usher in an era of glorious cross platform game support for the Vita and, alongside the promised major first and third party support, make it the one stop for all of your portable gaming needs, but of course, none of that ever panned out.

And now it never will- later this year, Sony will be ending support for PlayStation Mobile, they have confirmed. Specifically on September 10, the entire service will come to an end. games distribution ends in July. The Android app will also be inaccessible after this date.

So… yeah. Another PS Vita initiative bites the dust. Between this, the Maps app, the Near app, and YouTube, Sony really are leaving the Vita out to die, aren’t they?

The indie game cross-platform initiative dies quietly.

If you were a fan of Sony’s cross-platform publishing venture for indie games, which would see titles release simultaneously on the PlayStation Vita and Google Android devices, then there’s bad news: Sony will no longer offer support for PlayStation Mobile on Android 4.4.3 devices and above.

Though this doesn’t mean you can’t play the games on your device, Sony doesn’t guarantee they’ll work correctly. You may not even be able to view the store at all. Android L, Google’s upcoming 64-bit update to the mobile OS, will neither be supported nor able to access the store. Also, there won’t be any PlayStation Certified mobile devices going forward.

For those who remember, PlayStation Mobile also provided a way for users to access classic PlayStation titles, and iOS got its fair of indie games like Super Crate Box and Rymdkapsel. It now appears the PS Vita will be the company’s focus in terms of portable indie games. Stay tuned for more.
