Though there are many who prefer their games to be accessible, there are also those who really like to challenge themselves. Often, some titles satisfy those needs by themselves, but more often than not, games end up giving options to players in case they want something really challenging- options that they present as rewards. Finishing a game and then playing it through again on a newly unlocked harder difficulty isn’t something that everyone enjoys, that’s for sure, but there’s a certain appeal to it as well. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at some games that featured some truly gruelling unlockable harder difficulties.

METAL GEAR SOLID 2

Metal Gear Solid 2 came out in Europe a few months after it did elsewhere, but players got a pretty sweet reward for their patience in the form of European Extreme difficulty. Even harder than regular Extreme, European Extreme gave players zero rations throughout the games, buffed up enemies so they could essentially deliver one hit kills (especially the bosses), and made it so that if you ever broke stealth and alerted an enemy, it was game over for you.

Ever wanted to get your hands on Shiny versions of Pokemon, especially Legendary types? GAME UK is organizing special character giveaways in stores starting from August 30th in celebration of the upcoming release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for the Nintendo 3DS.

Shiny versions of Pokemon are denoted by their differing colour during gameplay. As such, they are extremely rare and difficult to catch. Legendary types are especially difficult – you’d be hard-pressed to ever find a Shiny type. The Pokemon in question for GAME UK’s giveaways include Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. Distribution dates are as follows:

Shiny Dialga – August 30th to September 12th
Shiny Palkia – September 13th to September 26th
Shiny Giratina – September 27th to October 11th

The Legendary Pokemon will be available to those who own Pokémon Black, White, Black 2 or White 2 can bring their copies to GAME UK outlets for a chance to obtain their favourite Shiny Pokemon. Keep in mind: Only one Shiny for each customer. Pokemon X & Y will be out this October for the 3DS.

Consumers to get a free Pokemon upon purchase of Black 2/White 2

Fans who purchase the upcoming Pokemon Black and White 2 between October 12, which ius when the game releases, and November 12, will get a free Pokemon called Genesect via Nintendo WFC.

Now what the hell is this Genesect thingie?

It’s a new legendary, bug/steel type Pokemon, and it’s got this special attack called Techno Blast. Team Plasma recovered it from a 300 year old fossil and modified it, which is how it got that special attack. Supposedly, Genesect is the only Pokemon to have this attack in its arsenal.

Sounds pretty good to me. I was going to buy it anyway.

The Unova region of Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2 has undergone many changes, and new additions can be found in both Black City and White Forest. White Treehollow is found in the White Forest ofPokémon White Version 2, while Black Tower is now a part of the Black City found in Pokémon Black Version 2, and both locations offer advanced players challenging new obstacles to overcome. At both sites, players can do battle with high-level Pokémon to earn Exp. Points and items. The layouts of the White Treehollow and Black Tower are randomly generated, creating a unique experience that will challenge players to solve their maze-like construction and defeat the Trainers that stand in their way again and again.

CoroCoro Comics has some new details on Pokemon Black/White 2, the upcoming sequels to 2010’s Black/White.

Players will be able to choose from newly stylised male and female characters to begin their new quest, in which they will meet a new rival too. They also revealed a third character, named Akuroma. Apparently, he’s a mysterious person who’s researching Pokemon.

The game will begin in Hiougi City, in the South of Isshu.

The magazine also says that Pokemon Black and White 2 will be released in Japan for the DS on June 23, but Nintendo has not officially announced a specific release date for the game yet, so I’d take that with a pinch of salt.

7 Things We Want To See In Pokemon Black/White 2

Going largely against tradition and becoming the first numbered, direct sequel in the history of the franchise, Pokemon Black/White 2 are surely looking like they’ll change the shape of things and give us a look at the future of the franchise. It’s a new territory for developers Game Freak- they’re not going to have a clean slate to work with, a fresh start. Being the direct sequel to the incredible Black/White, there’s a lot they have to keep in mind, a lot they need to live up to.

Here are seven things we want to see in Black/White 2, seven things that might just make the upcoming sequel a game worthy of the franchise’s name and worthy of the predecessor.

Proper continuity

Being a direct sequel to Black and White, there obviously will be continuity here. But how well Game Freak manages that will also be very important in deciding the fate of the game. Will we see more of Team Galactic? Will we have to collect all 8 gym badges again? What’s gonna happen to N (more on this later)? There are just so many plot threads that need to be continued in Black/White 2, plot threads that will not only affect the story progression, but how the game plays out. Let’s hope Game Freak gets it right.

More cinematic

Pokemon Black and White had sweeping camera angles, awesome bridges and cities to show off from impressive angles, some great cutscenes- and not just by Pokemon standards-, and other things we would never had imagined to see in a Pokemon game before. With Black and White, Game Freak proved that they are ready to experiment. We’re hoping we see more of the cutscenes and the new, awesome camera angles Black and White 2 as we did in 2010.

HeartGold/SoulSilver UI

We loved Pokemon Black and White, but we will never understand why Game Freak removed the awesome touch screen interface that was incorporated in HeartGold/SoulSilver. The interface of HG/SS was awesome- one touch, and you could do all the fundamental stuff that was required in a Pokemon game- no using buttons and long winded menus. Everything was clean and crisp, and HG/SS were perhaps the first and only Pokemon games to make good use of the touch screen. We want Black/White 2 to see the return of the same interface- we don’t care if Game Freak changes it at all, because it was perfect as it was. Just bring it back.

First Pokemon Black/White 2 footage coming next week

The first footage of Pokemon Black and White 2 will be unveiled next week during the Pokemon Smash episode. Not only will a trailer be shown, actual gameplay footage- a battle between the white and black versions of the new legendary Pokemon, Kyurem- will also be demonstrated.

Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda will be presenting all this on stage. He will also talk about the new Pokemon Meloetta in detail.

This new episode of Pokemon Smash will be aired on April 15 in Japan.

New Pokemon Black/White 2 info coming soon

A new Pokemon related announcement is headed our way and it will supposedly be revealing some pretty important info. It’s got something to do with the recently announced Pokemon Black 2 and White 2.

The info will be revealed via the next episode of Pokemon Smash, which will air on April 8. Maybe we’ll get some insight into the story of the game and how it ties in with the original Black and White. They certainly ended on a cliffhanger, but this is the first time the Pokemon franchise is getting a direct sequel, so it should be interesting to see how Game Freak handles things.
