We’ve spoken plenty about games that should get remakes over the last few weeks- games from the 2000s, games from the 1990s. Here, however, we’re taking a bit of a different outlook- here, we’re looking specifically at handheld titles that could see some radical and very interesting reinventions if companies decided to bring them back into the limelight.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: THE MINISH CAP

The Minish Cap is easily among the most criminally underrated Zelda games of all time. Owing to the fact that it’s a handheld title and that it was developed by Capcom, not Nintendo, it’s been viewed as something of a sidequel by many, though as those who’ve played it will tell you, that’s an unfair assertion, because this is an incredible game. A remake that brings the game back to the forefront for modern audiences would surely prove that.

It's always great to see games respond to constructive criticism in the right fashion, and these ten did just that.

It’s always fun to see developers taking swings and trying out new ideas, especially when they’re, you know, good ideas. But of course, they’re not always good ideas- or at least they’re ideas that have been let down by poor execution. And every so often, we see developers listening to the inevitable criticism for such implementations and dropping those features and mechanics entirely when they move on to the sequel, instead trying out something else based on the feedback from audiences and critics. Here, we’re going to talk about a few such games.

THE MAKO IN MASS EFFECT 2

Being able to move around on alien planets and moons in a massive tank sounds like such a great idea in paper- simple, yes, and not out-of-the-box by any means, but it’s something that just sounds appealing. Mass Effect’s Mako sections, however, were famously terrible. The environments were barren and repetitive, combat in the Mako felt rather uninteresting, and worst of all, actually driving the vehicle was a bit of a nightmare. The first game’s Mako sections were one of the few parts of the game that received heavy criticism, and of course, BioWare went on to drop it completely in Mass Effect 2, replacing it with the much more simplified probe mining mechanic- which wasn’t exactly a huge hit either, but at least it wasn’t actively obnoxious like the Mako sections tended to be. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition did end up making some improvements to the Mako, and Mass Effect: Andromeda’s open world driving was a step up over it as well, even though it wasn’t exactly spectacular. Even so, it’s fair to say that Mass Effect as a series has never really managed to do vehicles right.

Their methods may have been less than morally just but these villains did have a compelling argument, despite the hero's stance.

Many antagonists have a clear motive, opposing the player in various ways for the sake of evil. Some aren’t nearly as cut and dry though – their motivations are complex and oftentimes, when the hero can seemingly do no wrong, they can have a solid counterpoint or two. Let’s take a look at 10 villains who are like this and whether they were ultimately justified.

N – Pokemon Black and White

In many ways, you have to feel for N. Orphaned at a young age and raised by Pokemon, he would have very little interaction with humans aside from Ghetsis (who would claim to be his father for his own nefarious ends). Though he doesn’t have much animosity towards the player, a lifetime of seeing Pokemon hurt by humans skewed his perceptions. N dreamed of having separate worlds for both species, letting Pokemon live in peace without any interference from humanity. Unfortunately, this was all a ploy by Ghetsis to get Zekrom/Reshiram on his side and reign over the world. Despite being the one manipulated, N would eventually apologize and return in the sequel to help the player out.

Fighting the fight... for the wrong reasons.

Video games have a tendency to turn the tables on their audiences for some truly surprising twists and turns, and often, these take the form of reveals that the character we’d been playing as all along and thought was the good guy had inadvertently been doing the wrong things all along. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at games that did exactly that.

Do note that there will be spoilers ahead for every game we speak about, so if we begin talking about a game you don’t want spoiled, skip ahead to the next entry.

METAL GEAR SOLID 2

We all love a good conspiracy theory, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty threw the mother of conspiracy theories at us when it revealed to us the true nature of the Illuminati-like Patriots. What was even more of a gut-punch, though, was the realization that Raiden had inadvertently been functioning like a pawn for them all along, with the reveal that the entire Big Shell Incident was orchestrated by the Patriots just as a means to facilitate the S3 Plan and mould Raiden into their very own Solid Snake replica.

The more the merrier, right? Here are 15 times you fight sequential bosses.

Bosses sometimes come in pairs, but we don’t mean ganging up on the player. Sometimes you’ll take down one towering foe only to discover that another cowers behind them. Here are 15 times you fight sequential bosses.

Metal Gear Solid 2 – Metal Gear Ray followed by a battle with Solidus Snake

Raiden goes through a lot of tough battles in Metal Gear Solid 2, but the toughest is certainly the wave of Metal Gear Rays that appear out of nowhere to attack the hero at the end of the game, weakening him for his confrontation with the conniving Solidus Snake. And what a finale it’s as Raiden finally gets his revenge on Solidus who killed his parents,

Ever wanted to get your hands on Shiny versions of Pokemon, especially Legendary types? GAME UK is organizing special character giveaways in stores starting from August 30th in celebration of the upcoming release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for the Nintendo 3DS.

Shiny versions of Pokemon are denoted by their differing colour during gameplay. As such, they are extremely rare and difficult to catch. Legendary types are especially difficult – you’d be hard-pressed to ever find a Shiny type. The Pokemon in question for GAME UK’s giveaways include Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. Distribution dates are as follows:

Shiny Dialga – August 30th to September 12th
Shiny Palkia – September 13th to September 26th
Shiny Giratina – September 27th to October 11th

The Legendary Pokemon will be available to those who own Pokémon Black, White, Black 2 or White 2 can bring their copies to GAME UK outlets for a chance to obtain their favourite Shiny Pokemon. Keep in mind: Only one Shiny for each customer. Pokemon X & Y will be out this October for the 3DS.

Going largely against tradition and becoming the first numbered, direct sequel in the history of the franchise, Pokemon Black/White 2 are surely looking like they’ll change the shape of things and give us a look at the future of the franchise. It’s a new territory for developers Game Freak- they’re not going to have a clean slate to work with, a fresh start. Being the direct sequel to the incredible Black/White, there’s a lot they have to keep in mind, a lot they need to live up to.

Here are seven things we want to see in Black/White 2, seven things that might just make the upcoming sequel a game worthy of the franchise’s name and worthy of the predecessor.

Enjoy, and leave behind your feedback in the comments section below.

Proper continuity

Being a direct sequel to Black and White, there obviously will be continuity here. But how well Game Freak manages that will also be very important in deciding the fate of the game. Will we see more of Team Galactic? Will we have to collect all 8 gym badges again? What’s gonna happen to N (more on this later)? There are just so many plot threads that need to be continued in Black/White 2, plot threads that will not only affect the story progression, but how the game plays out. Let’s hope Game Freak gets it right.

More cinematic

Pokemon Black and White had sweeping camera angles, awesome bridges and cities to show off from impressive angles, some great cutscenes- and not just by Pokemon standards-, and other things we would never had imagined to see in a Pokemon game before. With Black and White, Game Freak proved that they are ready to experiment. We’re hoping we see more of the cutscenes and the new, awesome camera angles Black and White 2 as we did in 2010.

HeartGold/SoulSilver UI

We loved Pokemon Black and White, but we will never understand why Game Freak removed the awesome touch screen interface that was incorporated in HeartGold/SoulSilver. The interface of HG/SS was awesome- one touch, and you could do all the fundamental stuff that was required in a Pokemon game- no using buttons and long winded menus. Everything was clean and crisp, and HG/SS were perhaps the first and only Pokemon games to make good use of the touch screen. We want Black/White 2 to see the return of the same interface- we don’t care if Game Freak changes it at all, because it was perfect as it was. Just bring it back.

Earlier we reported that there was going to be a very important Pokemon announcement soon. We finally have the confirmation that it is indeed a direct sequel to a mainline Pokemon game: Pokemon Black 2 and White 2. This is the first time there’s been a direct, numbered sequel in the canonical Pokemon series.

Reports all over the internet say that the Pokemon Black/White sub-series is a trilogy, so there- we already know there’s proabably gonna be a Pokemon Black and White 3 soon. Maybe that’ll be on the 3DS. We don’t have a confirmation on this yet, but we’ll keep you updated.

It was revealed via Pokemon Smash TV show. The images we have shows two new forms of Kyurem. The game will be released for Nintendo DS, and not 3DS, which is a little surprising.

The game will be released in Japan in June, and we don’t have the specific release dates for NA and EU yet.

There’s also a new teaser site up, which you can check out over here.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

A new Pokemon instalment is expected- a new Pokemon instalment is always expected. And while we have all been waiting for the next game to be revealed soon, it still feels good to see a confirmation. Earlier today Pokemon producer Junichi Masuda announced via the GameFreak blog that he would be making “a very important announcement” this Sunday.

Here’s his exact message:

“On this coming Sunday, Februrary 26, 2012, from 7:30 A.M, I, Masuda, will be appearing on TV TOKYO’s Show, “Pokemon Smash!” Not only that. And there… I will be making a VERY important announcement,so be sure not to miss it!! Watch it live on TV!

And, for those of you who can’t watch television on live, I will announce the same information right after the show via twitter!! Everyone, I hope you all enjoy the show!! Ciao!”

Most probably, this is going to be the long rumoured Pokemon Grey, the third instalment in the Ubova series. However, we also think that it might be the Ruby/Sapphire remakes- also long rumoured- since I think there wasn’t much room for improvement in Black and White, being as awesome as they were.

Then again, Game Freak might be going against convention and tradition and announcing an entirely new generation of Pokemon altogether. While this is a highly unlikely scenario, it still is a possibility.

Or maybe it’s just a crappy Pokemon spinoff.

In either case, we’ll keep you updated, so stay tuned.

Last year a special Mewtwo was given away by The Pokemon company in Japan. Now, said Mewtwo will be making his way to the US of A. Starting February 12th, The Pokemon Company will begin distributing the Mewtwo over Wi-Fi for Black or White owners. A page on the official Pokemon website claims he has a move which Mewtwo cannot otherwise obtain, so it may well be the same as the Japanese Mewtwo who came with Psystrike, Shadow Ball, Aura Sphere, and Electro Ball.
