These epilogues will remain with you long after the credits roll.

It’s often said that a story is just as good as its ending, and it’s a saying that remains true in the case of video games as well. Many games tend to fumble when it comes to crafting truly memorable epilogues, but there are certain exceptions that go the extra mile and do the needful to deliver a fitting conclusion to the overarching narrative. To that end, we present 15 of the best epilogues in games. We have a lot to cover, so let’s get right into it.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Metal Gear Solid 4 holds the world record for having the longest ending cutscene of any video game, with the epilogue cutscenes cumulatively lasting for well over an hour. And while that might sound tedious at first, such an extensive epilogue was needed to wrap up all essential plotlines in the game. We jump from one beautifully directed scene to the other as characters as they attain some sort of closure to their internal and external conflicts, and finally cutting back to the graveyard where we are treated to an emotionally charged conversation between Old Snake and a stumbling Big Boss which will remain with you long after the credits roll.

Going the extra mile in a game often means special rewards. Not so with these ten titles, which went above and beyond to disappoint you.

Video games can be inherently fun but also emotional, demanding investment while also rewarding one for forming such a personal connection. Not every reward is worth the effort though. Some are lackluster while others are just plain insulting. Let’s take a look at 10 of the worst rewards in video games.

Secret Ending – Gex

Gex was painfully unfunny throughout. Still, if you slogged and completed all of the hidden bonus rounds in each world, thus garnering all of the remotes, you’d gain access to Planet X. This is a fairly large world with eight levels and completing all of them will unlock a special ending. Unfortunately, it’s a bit…mixed in the “pride and accomplishment” department. It starts out with a text crawl calling you the best player in the world, universe, etc etc.

However, it gets oddly personal, asking if you have a life or just play games all day, and telling you to think about what you could have done instead of wasting time on Gex. “Go have a life,” it says, before adding “Get out of those superhero pajamas and do something.” Was this meant to be inspirational in some way? A “get your life together before it’s too late, kids” message? Regardless, you’re then treated to some concept art and the credits, which is sort of better but does little to soothe the emotional damage.

Take a look back at Nintendo's best boss fights over the years.

When we think of memorable boss fights, the likes of Final Fantasy, Dark Souls, Persona and Mega Man X come to mind. It’s amazing to look back on Nintendo’s history then and marvel at just how many awesome boss fights it’s had throughout its numerous franchises and consoles. Let’s take a look at 15 of the best Nintendo-exclusive bosses through the decades.

Bowser – Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64 was a series of firsts for many Nintendo fans. But it also offered one of the most memorable battles with Bowser ever. It was simple – the Koopa King was huge and Mario was small. The only way to defeat him was to grab his tale, swing the analog stick to get enough speed, aim for the bombs surrounding the arena and release Bowser to damage him. Simple but unique and fairly challenging on the third go-around, Bowser’s 64-form remains an iconic fight.

Even the most eagle-eyed players can walk right into these.

Games love blindsiding their players, and players love being blindsided. That moment when a game perfectly lays a simple but effective trap for you, and you foolishly walk right into it- it can be really frustrating. But in a good, “I’m glad this game is keeping me on my toes” way. Sure, the law of diminishing returns very much applies to things like this, but springing such traps the very first time can lead to cool moments of discovery. In this feature, we will talk about a few such traps.

MIMIC CHESTS (DARK SOULS)

The poster boys of traps in video games that players keep falling for. Mimic chests are by no means the exclusive domain of Dark Souls, but FromSoftware’s RPG uses it better than most out there. Walking up to a chest with anticipation of what treasures it might hold, only for it to open its mouth wide and try to swallow you whole can be a terrifying feeling. And sure, the more you play, the less you fall for it, and the more used to it you become- but those first few times are unforgettable.

Moments that will stick with us for years.

Thanks to their interactivity and the fact that technology keeps progressing at a rapid pace, video games have a way of making us feel things like no other medium of entertainment does. Countless times over the years, we’ve all experienced moments in games that made us pause and marvel at what just happened, moments that will stay with us for many years to come. In this feature, we’ll be talking about fifteen such moments.

WARNING: This feature contains spoilers for every game we discuss, so if we begin talking about a game you don’t want spoiled, skip ahead to the next entry.

GOD OF WAR – REVELATIONS ABOUT FAYE

God of War was full of moments that shook us to our core. The Blades of Chaos, the reveal that Atreus is Loki- but rather than talking about the parts of the game that we’ve talked about countless times, we wanted to highlight something else. The revelation about Atreus right at the end of the game was certainly a huge moment, but something else that also gave the story an entirely new layer of depth was finding out that Faye had essentially been the orchestrator of Kratos and Atreus’ whole journey. She had Kratos cut down the tree that would send them out into the world, she marked the paths that both of them would want for the entire game- she was basically the writer of their story. Replaying God of War with that knowledge lends a whole new meaning to the game’s narrative.

Ever banged your head against a wall? This is what that feels like.

We all love a good, challenging boss fight, but every once in a while, we come across bosses that test our patience like few others do, that almost make us swear off whatever game we’re playing in a fit of fury. This is a feature dedicated to fifteen such bosses.

VALKYRIE QUEEN (GOD OF WAR)

God of War (2018) might not stand toe-to-toe with the likes of God of War 2 and 3 as far as the sheer quantity bonkers set-piece boss fights is concerned, but the optional fights against the Valkyries almost made up for that. And the Valkyrie Queen was the hardest, most memorable of them all. Countless God of War players have gone up against her again and again and again and come away with nothing to show for it. Of course, that swelling sense of satisfaction you get when (and if) you do beat her is an excellent reward in and of itself.

Never, ever judge a book by its cover.

There are some bosses in video games who just look threatening, who give off an aura of danger the moment you lay your eyes on them. But then there are some that you look at and go, “eh, this’ll be easy”. Maybe the character you’re playing as is just too powerful, or has become too powerful, and you find it hard to believe that they’ll lose to this “boss”. Maybe the boss standing in front of you has been built up in context of the narrative as someone you’re not supposed to think much of. Or maybe, you just judge a book by its cover, and the boss simply looks unassuming. Sometimes, these assumptions are correct- but sometimes, they aren’t. In this feature, we’re going to take a look at fifteen bosses in video games that, for some reason or another, we thought would be absolute cakewalks, but turned out to be truly formidable foes.

Note: There are spoilers ahead for every game we talk about. If you see us beginning to talk about a game you don’t want spoiled, skip ahead to the next entry.

THE STRANGER (GOD OF WAR)

Kratos is a man who’s killed everything that can be killed. He’s killed hydras and krakens and gigantic minotaurs, he’s killed the Colossus of Rhodes and the mythical Medusa. He’s killed the likes of Zeus, Ares, and Poseidon in their ethereal forms. Flipping hell, he even killed Cronos, a character so big, the screen could literally not fit his entire body, and Kratos looked like little more than a pixel in comparison. There isn’t much – or anything – that you look at and think to yourself, “maybe Kratos will have trouble killing this thing/person”. Especially not when, at the beginning of God of War (2018), this lanky dude with tattoos walks up to Kratos’ front door, and then proceeds to hurl insults at him, provoke him, hit him, threaten him and his son. All the while, you’re thinking, “this dude is asking for trouble. Kratos is going to turn him inside out and wear him like a coat”. And then the Stranger goes full Super Saiyan, and turns out to be more than just a thorn in Kratos’ side.

There are secret bosses and then there are final bosses that truly mark the end of a video game. While the latter seems obvious enough, many video games actually take a few steps to hide boss battles behind different requirements. Whether it’s playing on a higher difficulty, gathering the right items or just not dying, here are 15 final bosses you could probably miss.

Victor Navarro – True Crime: New York City

Utilizing a Good Cop/Bad Cop system, True Crime: New York City had two key endings depending on the player’s performance. If you were a good cop, then the game saw Victor Navarro being arrested with millions of dollars at the Grand Central Station locker. However, Higgins re-emerges and the player must apprehend him to get a good ending. Pursue the bad cop route and not only will there be a proper boss fight with Navarro but our hero will meet Higgins, kill him and steal the cash offered before contemplating his dark path.

It’s almost here, folks.

It’s almost here, folks. We’re on the last lap, and as only twelve days remain that separate us from the next installment in one of the biggest franchises in gaming, I’m sure there are loads of you guys out there who are eagerly awaiting the review of the first new Pokemon game in four years. And while we’d like for the review to be up as soon as possible, we’d also like for it to be the most complete, thorough and informative review that we could provide you guys with. So, unfortunately, as the two priorities clearly clash, we had to pick one over the other.

GamingBolt’s review for Pokemon Black and White will not go online until after the game has been released. There are, of course, several reasons for this- Pokemon Black and White are incredibly deep and complex games, and the single player portion alone takes nearly seventy hours to finish. And finishing the main story mode isn’t even half of it, as not only does the game proper begin after the story mode’s been done, but Pokemon Black and White have the deepest, richest after game since the legendary Pokemon Gold and Silver. Given the sheer number of extra things to do in this game- local co-op, online battles, sidequests and minigames, trading, importing all your Pokemon from your older games to the newer one- and well, I think you can clearly understand why we need some time with this little baby before we can conclusively tell you how good (or bad) it is.

In the meanwhile, what we can tell you is that Pokemon Black and White are very, very special games. How special? Well, without giving away anything, let’s just say that these games have the potential to topple Pokemon Gold and Silver from their lofty perch. Yep, I just said that.

For the final word, look out for the review. We hope to have the review for Pokemon Black and White up before 11.59 PM on the 11th of March, Central Time. In the meantime, I seriously suggest you guys go back and play through the DS Pokemon games one last time. It’ll be your last opportunity to bid farewell to an era that lasted nearly fifteen years.
