We had reported upon this last week, but the UK was seeing a renewed bout of Pokemon fever on the back of the launch of Pokemon GO there- and now, it seems as though we have definitive and conclusive proof of interest in the mainline Pokemon games having increased as a result of the launch of the perennially successful mobile game.

Three Pokemon games charted in the UK Top 40 this week, of the four separate SKUs that are available on the Nintendo 3DS currently- Pokemon OmegaRuby was No. 17, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire is at 24th, and finally, Pokemon Y sits at 29th. Pokemon X remains the only 3DS Pokemon game to not chart this week. Gfk, the company tracking game sales in the UK, expects the spike to be sustained, and to see Pokemon related hardware and software to see an increased uptake August onwards.

It will be interesting to see if all of this craze can last until Pokemon Sun/Moon, the next mainline games in the series that are due to launch on November 18 worldwide exclusively in the 3DS, and November 23 in Europe.

In conjunction with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, Gamestop will be holding multiple Pokemon themed promotions this entire month throughout USA, where buying Pokemon themed items from a Gamestop store can enter you into drawings for prizes such as a Pokemon themed Nintendo 3DS XL or a trip to Hawaii (I have no idea what that last one has to do with Pokemon, but okay).

The promotion is known as Pokemon Megastop, and it runs till 11.59PM CT on December 31- a very long time to go get something Pokemon from a Gamestop store. Everyone who buys anything will get at least a code to be entered on the Pokemon.com website, which can be redeemed for a digital booster pack in the Pokemon Online Trading Card game.

Another caveat is that this promotion is only valid in Gamestop stores in the United States- so if you live in Canada or Mexico, sorry.

Pokemon OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire, the latest installments in Nintendo and Game Freak’s long running Pokemon series, and remakes of the cult classic third generation, are out worldwide now, and they are massive hits, having sold 7.7 million copies worldwide already. For reference, this sales performance is faster than the sales performance of Pokemon X and Y last year, and is also faster than any other title this year, including heavyweights such as Watch Dogs, Destiny, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Mario Kart 8, and the Grand Theft Auto V re-release.

Sales of the game were especially strong in Europe, a territory which seems to have flocked to the newest games, with total sales representing a 135% increase over last year’s Pokemon X and Y.

Amazingly enough, this probably isn’t even the end of it- the game is only two weeks out from its launch, and we can probably expect some high numbers posted during the holiday season. If this keeps up, the games may end up selling more than even Pokemon X and Y (13.5 million units sold so far, a year out from their release), which would be surprising, since those were original entries, while OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire, for all their feats, are still remakes; and even the original Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, which have lifetime sales of 16.5 million units.

You can check out our thoughts on the newest games by reading our review here.
