Even some of the best games of all time can have bugs that make them outright unplayable. Check out 15 of the biggest here.

Bugs and glitches are an unfortunate reality in video games. You could blame it on QA – when the reality is that most are overworked and outright ignored, even when critical issues are highlighted repeatedly – but even the most polished games can have issues.

Steam Crashing Bug – Resident Evil Village

Before the Winters’ Expansion, Resident Evil Village suffered a strange bug on PC. It occurred after installing the new patch on Steam, with the game telling players to restart and then crashing. Oddly enough, this only affected the Steam version. While eventually fixed, the cause was never really discovered, which is even more ominous.

Going the extra mile in a game often means special rewards. Not so with these ten titles, which went above and beyond to disappoint you.

Video games can be inherently fun but also emotional, demanding investment while also rewarding one for forming such a personal connection. Not every reward is worth the effort though. Some are lackluster while others are just plain insulting. Let’s take a look at 10 of the worst rewards in video games.

Secret Ending – Gex

Gex was painfully unfunny throughout. Still, if you slogged and completed all of the hidden bonus rounds in each world, thus garnering all of the remotes, you’d gain access to Planet X. This is a fairly large world with eight levels and completing all of them will unlock a special ending. Unfortunately, it’s a bit…mixed in the “pride and accomplishment” department. It starts out with a text crawl calling you the best player in the world, universe, etc etc.

However, it gets oddly personal, asking if you have a life or just play games all day, and telling you to think about what you could have done instead of wasting time on Gex. “Go have a life,” it says, before adding “Get out of those superhero pajamas and do something.” Was this meant to be inspirational in some way? A “get your life together before it’s too late, kids” message? Regardless, you’re then treated to some concept art and the credits, which is sort of better but does little to soothe the emotional damage.

For all the effort it takes to finish a game, there are some that ensure you're rewarded in kind, whether it's new weapons or special content.

While it’s nice to have more content to run through when finishing a game’s story, sometimes you just want a nice reward for all that hard work. It could be something to make subsequent playthroughs easier, a cool bonus on top of everything else or even a fitting epilogue. Let’s take a look at 15 games which offer these rewards (and more).

Final Fantasy 15 – Regalia Type F

While it’s fun to explore the world of Eos by casually driving around, you’ll want something faster and more convenient when the story is over. The Regalia Type F is the perfect answer – it’s unlocked by clearing three Imperial bases (the third base has a recommended level of 46 but it’s better to do it after finishing the story). Though it can’t be used for exploring the sea and needs a road to land on, this pseudo-airship is fast and doesn’t require fuel, which is a nice bonus.

Just when you think everything is fine, someone suddenly loses their face.

It’s been said before and warrants saying again but game development is difficult. Optimization is required to ensure smooth performance; bug-testing is done to prevent crashes and freezes; and so on and so forth. However, sometimes, certain bugs and/or glitches tend to slip through to much hilarity. Then there are those that aren’t funny. Those that are frightening and scarring.

So let’s take a look at 15 of those creepy glitches here!

Broken Face Textures – Assassin’s Creed Unity

No list of glitches is complete without mentioning Assassin’s Creed Unity and it’s missing face textures. The nature of the glitch is also amazing – one instance produces only the character’s teeth and blood-shot eyes, searing into your soul. Another was suitably more terrifying with its mess of textures, eyes and teeth coalescing into what might be a smile. Thanks to the game’s problematic launch, these glitches maintain their infamy to this day.

Today on "how to make things harder for yourself".

Playing video games that are difficult by design is all well and good, but things get really interesting when you’re playing a game that sneakily puts in elements that result in you making things harder for yourself. Whether that’s because of specific gameplay choices or hidden underlying mechanics or even consequences of seemingly unrelated actions, there have been a number of games over the years that have done exactly that. Here, we’re going to talk about a few of them.

SPEC OPS: STEALTH PATROL – SWAPPED DIFFICULTIES

A perfect example of how the lack of post-launch patches (which is something we now take for granted) could ruin a game. Its easy, normal, and hard difficulties were dubbed private, corporal, and sergeant respectively, only in the game itself, private and sergeant were, for whatever reason, swapped. This meant that people who wanted to play the game on the easiest difficulty were unknowingly playing it on the hardest, wondering all the while just why things were as frustratingly difficult as they were. Spec Ops: Stealth Patrol wasn’t exactly the best of games as it is, and this did it no favours.

Blurring the lines of genres.

Scaring their audiences is not the exclusive domain of horror games. Every so often, games that are not in the horror genre can surprise players with how unsettling they can be, and one of the most effective ways for them to do that is through music. And in this feature, that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about, as we list 14 instances of games that weren’t exactly horror taking us aback with their scary music. So without further ado, let’s get started.

LAVENDER TOWN (POKEMON RED AND BLUE)

For a series made primarily for kids, Pokemon has a surprising tendency to regularly show some pretty eerie stuff, and the eeriest of them all was Lavender Town as a whole. From the creepy Pokemon Tower to the vibe of the whole town, Lavender Town was not a very pleasant place to be in- and the music accompanying the location had a huge hand in that.

Let’s take a look at some final bosses who don’t die but not because of their immortality - it’s more due to the player who doesn’t outright murder them.

Boss fights are an intricate part of video games and yet, so versatile in how they can be handled. Whether it’s a boss that draws sympathy or one that seemingly never dies, there are all kinds bosses to encounter.

Keiji Shibusawa – Yakuza 0

There’s only room for one Dragon of Dojima in Yakuza 0 and unfortunately for Keiji Shibusawa, it’s not him. The patriarch of Yakuza 0’s Shibusawa family, he’s usually portrayed as someone with a mind for business. However, this hides his sheer ruthlessness as witnessed when he set out to kill the Kazama family. The final battle sees Kiryu nearly kill Shibusawa but Nishiki would intervene, thus ensuring that Keiji went to jail.

Buy low and sell high - these shopkeepers were absolutely ruthless.

With the amount of scams in real life, you’d think video games would provide some kind of refuge. Alas, there are a plenty of crooks in the gaming world as well. At least some aren’t without their charm. Let’s take a look at 13 notorious shopkeepers and merchants in gaming.

Bomb-Master Cannon – The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Upon arriving at Windfall Island’s Bomb Shop, you’ll be shocked to learn just what kind of prices are on offer. For 10 bombs, you need to pay a whopping 10,000 rupees. Sure he’s the last bomb-maker left but that’s enough to crowd-fund ten of Ganon’s deaths. Thankfully, once Tetra and her crew give him the ol’ rundown, Bomb-Master Cannon sees fit to lower his prices.

It all made sense, once upon a time, but now you just can't remember what's what in a game.

How long has it been since you revisited “that” game? You know the one, where you always want to return but didn’t have the time (and were actually off playing something else). The time is now though there are a few things that could happen when loading up a really old save. Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

Forgetting Where You Are

It’s one thing to know that you’re Kassandra, the Misthios who’s fighting for her family and to discover her true purpose. It’s quite another to load in to a map you barely remember, on the outskirts of some outpost, not sure whether you were friends with the Athenians or Spartans and who suffered from your decisions. Don’t even get us started on loading into Fallout 4 with your custom character, unsure of the mess you’ve made or which faction you aligned with.

Mind control, hauntings and actual murders - here a few urban legends that were hard to ignore.

It’s not strange for mysteries to crop up in gaming, whether it’s in the form of Easter Eggs or secrets. However, some mysteries remain unsolved for a long time and transcend into the realm of urban legends, their validity somewhat iffy. You might have heard it from a friend of a friend, believed a hoax or simply encountered something that defies explanation – here are 14 urban legends in video games regardless.

Haunted – Pokemon Snap

Take it as just another urban legend or the stuff of truth but one unfortunate player apparently found a haunted copy of Pokemon Snap. The N64 title saw players on-rails, taking pictures of Pokemon on Pokemon Island. It’s a generally happy game but this particular copy had odd purple streaks throughout. Professor Oak’s eyes were replaced with pitch-black voids and many of the lovable pocket monsters looked downright unsettling (according to the person in question that is). At some point, visiting the volcano stage would result in Pokemon screaming. Soon enough, the player saw himself submerged in lava. That’s several degrees of “yikes” right there.
