Can you guess which Pokemon mobile game has earned the most money?

Pokemon is the world’s biggest franchise. It has conquered literally every market it has entered, from video games to anime to trading cards, merchandise, and beyond. This also includes, apparently, mobile games. Mobile analysis firm Sensor Tower have put out a report where they state that Pokemon mobile games and apps have collectively earned a staggering $2.5 billion in revenue to date.

Of course, the lion’s share of that goes to the still popular Pokemon GO, which has earned an eye-watering $2.45 billion of that total- which is 98%, for those keeping track. The remaining $50 million is divided between Pokemon Shuffle, Pokemon Duel, Pokemon Conquest, Pokemon TCG Online, and Pokemon: Magikarp Jump, with Pokemon Shuffle earning $25 million out of that.

The US continues to be the biggest market for Pokemon too, with 35% of all this revenue coming from there; Japan, as expected, is in second place, with 29%. Of course, Pokemon is big everywhere, so in the end, even the “smaller” markets for it end up contributing obscene amounts of money.

The popular free to play title will be available on smartphones in addition to Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company’s Pokemon Shuffle, the Pokemon themed tile matching free to play puzzle game that released earlier this year on the Nintendo 3DS to a surprisingly great reception, will be making the jump and coming to iOS and Android later this year, Nintendo announced today. This makes Pokemon Shuffle the very first Nintendo game to be available on mobile platforms, and the very first Nintendo game to be available on a non Nintendo platform in over a decade.

Pokemon Shuffle does not seem to have anything to do with DeNA, the Japanese mobile games giant that Nintendo is partnering with to bring original mobile games to iOS and Android; on that note, it also seems to be a simple port, unlike the original mobile games that we were promised. It seems those will be directly linked to Nintendo’s partnership with DeNA at this point.

Pokemon Shuffle is a surprisingly fun and addictive free to play puzzle game, available to play on your Nintendo 3DS right now. Since launch, it has been downloaded 5 million times, so maybe it will see the same kind of success on iOS and Android too. Stay tuned.

Urgh.

Nintendo has gone ahead and given us a taste of what we could expect from them if they did answer the calls of all these analysts and investors, and released a free to play Pokemon game for the Nintendo 3DS on the Nintendo eShop.

Now, Nintendo has done free to play games before, and they have been largely innocuous, and designed so it is possible to play them without having to pay. Not Pokemon Shuffle though. Though it is not as obnoxious and in your face about it as the worst free to play mobile games can often be, it is still designed to extract every last possible penny from you, and that is offensive.

Nintendo is one of the world’s best developer of games, so to see them being reduced to making games like this is sad. Yes, I understand this is a small side project that is not indicative of their output as a whole, but still, I would rather Nintendo keep itself distanced from this kind of a product to begin with. And especially the Pokemon brand needs to be unsullied, it’s one of the few sure hits they have anymore.

Anyway, if you want the game, it’s available on the Nintendo eShop on all Nintendo 3DS devices now.
