Then dive into the sequel and really start to grasp all the different tools that Endnight Games has offered, from solar-powered golf karts and hang-gliders (with launch pads) to an extensive range of firearms, new melee weapons, and mechanics, like AI helpers and a revamped building system. Though its narrative won&#8217;t quite hook you, the sheer amount of stuff to do on the island – inhumane and otherwise – provides hours of fun.</p>

However, its inarguable ray tracing improves visuals, more than in how we perceive light rays on-screen but in shadow and reflections too, and how all this lighting interacts with environments.</p>
<p>The technology is steadily improving; performance is still hampered mind, but developers can utilise the tech more efficiently than other techniques like rasterization during the game creation process, with spectacular results now more commonplace than they were a few years ago. This is the fourth feature we’ve published centring on ray tracing, so if your chosen pinnacle of real-time lighting isn’t featured here it’s likely on another (like arguably the most impressive ray traced game around, <em>Metro Exodus</em>).</p>

<p><em>Alan Wake 2’s</em> evocative atmosphere and surreal art design is made altogether more unsettling by ray tracing. Of course, enjoying all of ray tracing’s benefits plus DLSS 3.5 is computationally taxing even on PCs with high end GPUs. That said, Remedy Entertainment have done a decent job implementing ray tracing on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X that the step towards ultra-realism looks good on console. PC is where it’s at though; tweaking your GPU settings to the same as PS5 yields almost double the gameplay performance. Surfaces are glossier, of course, but it’s those additional reflections – an outside window reflecting in an internal picture frame, for example – that demonstrate <em>Alan Wake 2’s</em> exceptional graphics.</p>

Like others on this list, <em>The Stanley Parable</em> can be categorized as a visual novel just as much as it can a video game, though it smartly pokes at what it means to be a video game through its unique first-person interactivity.</p>

Sure, the combat wasn’t amazing, and the level design left something to be desired, but the immersive quality of the main character’s audio-visual hallucinations was new and interesting. <em>Hellblade</em> helped push the interactive medium by putting players into the mind of someone suffering from Psychosis. The team wanted a game that let players experience the mental illness itself, and not just the reactions of characters experiencing it. This was expressed by voices in Senua’s head rather than just text on a screen. <em>Hellblade</em> was played by many outside the gaming space who wanted to experience something new and different, and that included nurses and doctors wanting to understand Psychosis as well as casual players looking for a different kind of narrative experience.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Animal Crossing: New Horizons</h2>
<p>Any <em>Animal Crossing</em> game could earn a spot on this list, but <em>New Horizons</em> gets an edge up due to being on the Switch and selling a whopping 45 million. <em>Animal Crossing</em> is pretty much the ultimate cozy lifestyle sim, one that doesn’t demand too much time to thoroughly enjoy. The gameplay philosophy of taking on little bite-sized tasks every day can apply to real life, and it’s one of the reasons people from all walks of life love it. The portable on-the-go functionality of the Nintendo Switch adds to the mass appeal of <em>Animal Crossing: New Horizons</em> further, giving otherwise-dull vacations and business trips added fun as players meet new villagers and find ways to pay off Tom Nook’s loan.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">The Witness</h2>
<p>Braid was one of the first indie games to really go viral back in the late 2000s, and we had to wait quite a long while for Jonathan Blow’s next game. 8 years later, <em>The Witness</em> arrived and challenged what a puzzle video game could be. <em>The Witness</em> is about as pure a puzzle game as you can get. There’s no music, no plot, and no gameplay to speak of other than walking and solving the creative grid-based line-connecting puzzles. Puzzle aficionados can feel right at home with <em>The Witness</em>’s escalating complexity without worrying about control scheme worries or typical multimedia layers like sound and cinematics getting in the way. The only knock against it is that it’s still not available on Android, and that someone hasn’t converted its puzzles into book form yet.</p>

Also, it’s got the best branching choice flow chart in a game to date. <em>Detroit: Become Human</em> is a real delight to watch and play, making it an ideal streamer game for gamers and non-gamers alike.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Undertale</h2>
<p>It’s difficult to pin down how or what exactly got this RPG indie sensation so popular. <em>Undertale</em> employs a 2D aesthetic and despite its niche and retro inspirations, <em>Undertale</em> attracted many new gamers into the fold, resulting in a surge of people going back to play the older classics out of curiosity and passion for the style. The story isn’t your typical grandiose journey, and the gameplay merges genres like bullet hells into its battle system, making for a unique and fresh experience that has sparked an interest in such genres to newcomers.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Super Mario Odyssey</h2>
<p>Being one of the most popular and highly rated <em>Mario</em> games to date with 27 million in sales is no small feat. It’s true that pretty much every mainline <em>Mario</em> game has wide appeal and moves consoles, but <em>Super Mario Odyssey</em> had a trick up its sleeve, or should I say, a hat? The transforming Cappy hat, swimsuit Mario, and Jump Up Superstar big band song instantly entered meme status, capturing a wide audience as a result. And we’re thankful the marketing caught on because <em>Super Mario Odyssey</em> is one of the most fun and well-designed 3D platformers of all time.</p>

Also, the game is just so quick to jump in and out of thanks to the snappy respawn and checkpoints for every room. Beyond the flexible gameplay, the story is broadly appealing with the main character’s down-to-earth battles with anxiety, all told through a supernatural mountain climb.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Stardew Valley</h2>
<p><em>Stardew Valley</em> ticks all the casual boxes and does it with a surprising amount of depth. You can farm crops and stake your place in the valley at a leisurely pace, or you can work toward seeing the post-game content with a successful farm and wife. <em>Stardew Valley</em> has a lot of management sim meat on its bones despite its casual appearance, leading players to try out more involved games lacking the kind of convenience features this game has.</p>

The down-to-earth nature of its premise and laid-back gameplay help give <em>Firewatch</em> a broad appeal.</p>

<p>Everyone reading this already knows about <em>Journey</em>, so I’ll spare the summary. <em>Journey</em> is one of those games that gets instantly recommended to non-players, and for good reason. It’s impossible to fail at, has an attractive audio-visual core, and provides an interactive experience you can’t get elsewhere. The lack of UI cluttering the screen eases new players to dive in without hesitation. And who doesn’t like sand surfing? It’s just so easy to pop into a session without needing to use your brain and tense up your gaming reflexes. <em>Journey</em> would go on to be a true journey into the wide world of video games for many newcomers to the hobby.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Portal</h2>
<p>Originally developed as a school project titled <em>Narbacular Drop</em>, <em>Portal</em> went on to inspire independent games as a concept. The inventive portal tool gets our brains to think outside the box as we solve Glados’ test chambers. The narrative brims with inventiveness as the test subject, Chell, seeks to break free of the testing and find a new path forward. <em>Portal</em> remains one of the most creative and unique games ever created. It’s one of those games that breaks the boundary of the entertainment box it’s in, compelling gamers and non-gamers alike to experience its quirky and unpredictable narrative. Even with first-person 3D controls, non-gamers couldn’t help but experience such a novel, mind-bending game.</p>

You’re left to wander and figure things out through exploration and carefully constructed environments. If the dark atmosphere wasn’t enough, there’s also some horror sprinkled in with little jump scares and tense moments that help push Inside further into the annals of casual game stardom.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">The Last of Us: Part 1</h2>
<p><em>The Last of Us</em> manages to hit that sweet spot appealing to those outside the gaming sphere while still being challenging and ‘video-gamey’ in its own right. Now that <em>The Last of Us</em> TV show is out, non-gamers are flocking to the remake of the first game more than ever. The game’s setting ticks all the boxes of a modern series-seller: zombies, post-apocalypse, survival, father-daughter bonding, drama. <em>The Last of Us: Part 1</em> also happens to punch us right in the gut with one of the most impactful openers in any form of media, let alone video game. It’s easy to see why <em>The Last of Us</em> got its own TV series and a remakes after the original’s release in 2013.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild</h2>

Taking Zelda fully open world revitalized the genre and helped draw in new players who wanted to explore at their own pace. The open exploration is accompanied by flexible abilities like Magnet and Stasis, which allow for a wide range of creative solutions to puzzles and ways to play with items, enemies, and the environment around you. Sure, the weapons break way too fast in <em>Breath of the Wild</em>, but many players could overlook that due to the vast world and limitless ways to play the game. Many fans of <em>Breath of the Wild</em> would go on to try out other games afterward, revitalizing the genre with a new set of admirers.</p>

Here are 10 villains that played mind games with the player, whether in a single game or throughout their series. Spoilers follow, so be warned.</p>
<p><strong>Ocelot &#8211; Metal Gear Solid Series</strong></p>

<p>Going through everything that Ocelot does in the series may take a while. However, from <em>Metal Gear Solid 1</em>, it&#8217;s obvious that the man of revolvers was playing a longer game, working for Solidus to steal Metal Gear&#8217;s specs. <em>Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty</em> saw him “possessed” by the arm of Liquid Snake, later revealed to be a sham to lower the guard of The Patriots, who seemingly ran the world. In <em>Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots</em>, Ocelot controlled the five biggest PMCs in the world, took over The Patriots&#8217; SOP system and came close to ultimately destroying their AI if not for the efforts of Solid Snake and Otacon.</p>
<p><strong>Scarecrow – Batman: Arkham Asylum</strong></p>

<p>The very definition of mind games, as Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow, used Fear Toxin to create elaborate hallucinations to combat the Dark Knight in <em>Arkham Asylum</em>. He even had a giant Scarecrow in an otherworldly setting to prevent Batman from overcoming the illusion. It got even crazier when the game&#8217;s initial events occurred again, but this time with Batman in Joker&#8217;s place (revealed to be another illusion). After Batman breaks free again, Crane is taken out by Killer Croc and resurfaces in <em>Arkham Knight</em>, where he enacts a plan to break the hero.</p>
<p><strong>Albert Wesker &#8211; Resident Evil HD Remaster<br />

<p>Like Ocelot, Wesker&#8217;s career of manipulation is long and storied and can take some time to summarize. While he was a major villain in future titles, his manipulation is witnessed first-hand in the first <em>Resident Evil</em>. He was revealed to be working with Umbrella Corporation, even while seemingly guiding and helping S.T.A.R.S., and responsible for preventing Bravo Team&#8217;s escape, prompting Alpha Team with Chris, Jill, and Barry to get involved. Wesker also enlisted Barry&#8217;s help to destroy evidence, threatening his family in the process, and would unleash the Tyrant to hunt down Alpha Team. Hilariously, despite going so far for Umbrella, it&#8217;s revealed that Wesker betrayed them as well to work for a rival company.</p>
<p><strong>Vaas &#8211; Far Cry 3</strong></p>

<p>You have to feel bad for Jason Brody in <em>Far Cry 3</em> – even after surviving an encounter with Vaas, he&#8217;s left emotionally scarred from the death of his brother, Grant. While Jason pursues him at every turn and also attempts to rescue his friends, Vaas is seemingly one step ahead every time, leaving Jason to die in a burning building, drowning him, and even outright shooting him. When it seems like Jason has the upper hand when infiltrating Vaas&#8217;s compound to kill him, the latter broadcasts his plans to everyone. The two fight, and while Vaas appears to die, he seemingly survives, as seen in the <em>Far Cry 6</em> DLC Insanity.</p>
<p><strong>The Illusive Man &#8211; Mass Effect 2 and 3</strong></p>

He founded Cerberus to put humanity first over the alien races. Brainwashing, human experimentation, blackmail, corruption, genocide – the Illusive Man engaged in all this and more. Even his plan to revive Shepard in <em>Mass Effect 2</em> and fight the Collectors has an ulterior motive, as he seeks to seize their technology. In <em>Mass Effect 3</em>, he becomes obsessed with controlling the Reapers, even implanting himself with their technology. That he can simultaneously execute so many complex schemes and fight Shepard on so many fronts is a testament to his drive and will.</p>
<p><strong>SHODAN &#8211; System Shock</strong></p>
<p>As the artificial intelligence of Citadel Station, SHODAN would go rogue after the Hacker, well, hacked to gain amnesty from TriOptimum&#8217;s VP Edward Diego. Not only did she effectively gain sentience, but also gained control of the station and killed everyone on board. Well, almost everyone – some were turned into cyborgs or became mutants to serve her purpose of opposing the Hacker. Throughout all this, she&#8217;s constantly mocking the Hacker when not threatening him with violent ends. She&#8217;s viewed as the biggest threat facing the Earth before the first game ends, before returning in the sequel with a vengeance.</p>
<p><strong>Third Child &#8211; Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain</strong></p>

<p>The Third Child first appears in <em>Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain</em> with a bang, controlling the Man on Fire and summoning a giant flaming blue whale. He later controls Metal Gear Sahelanthropus, wreaking havoc before Venom Snake can fight back with a mounted turret. He&#8217;s also used to prevent the player from doing anything sneaky, like destroying the helicopter that Skull Face emerges from in Mission 30. While not explicitly confirmed whether the Third Child is Psycho Mantis, there have been too many hints throughout the series to suggest otherwise. At least, the Third Child relies more on fire and manipulation instead of, say, turning Meryl against you.</p>
<p><strong>GLaDOS – Portal</strong></p>

<p>One of the most unforgettable villains in gaming, GLaDOS was terrifying due to seeing humans (and, as we found out later, robots) as little more than test subjects. Live or die – all of that is secondary to the testing. In the first Portal, she starts with relatively safe tests to introduce you to the game&#8217;s various mechanics before turning the hazards up. You eventually learn that she may have killed all the researchers in Aperture Labs by releasing toxic gas.</p>
<p>Of course, her comments remain spicy throughout, as she mocks protagonist Chell&#8217;s life, parents, general skill and more. Insults like “smelly garbage standing around useless,” “a bitter unlikeable loner whose passing will not be mourned” and “horrible person” may sound biting on their own. However, GLaDOS&#8217; phrasing (and Ellen McLain&#8217;s incredible voice work) ensures they&#8217;re delivered with the right amount of panache.</p>
<p><strong>Scratch – Alan Wake 2</strong></p>

<p>Scratch is a complex being, first created as Wake&#8217;s doppelganger and meant to replace him in the real world before being possessed by the Dark Presence. Throughout <em>Alan Wake&#8217;s American Nightmare</em>, Scratch opposes Wake and is seemingly defeated, but emerges once more in <em>Alan Wake 2</em>, turning Wake&#8217;s escape attempt into a horror story that bleeds into the real world. From there, he causes all sorts of trouble and even succeeds in dragging Saga Anderson into the Dark Place to mess with her mind.</p>
<p><strong>Lisa – P.T.</strong></p>

<p>Lisa&#8217;s existence in <em>P.T.</em>, the teaser to the cancelled <em>Silent Hills,</em> is pitiful. She was previously expecting, but one day, her husband, claiming there was a monster inside of him, stabbed her. The result is that Lisa&#8217;s ghost haunts the halls of the teaser, sometimes appearing in a door frame before disappearing.</p>
<p>If possessed by her, players will hear a third footstep while walking and her ragged breathing. Turning around at this stage isn&#8217;t advised, since she&#8217;ll kill them. Regardless of whether you&#8217;re possessed or not, seeing her watching through the windows outside, the balcony upstairs and the bathroom before moving away.</p>
<p><strong>Scott Shelby &#8211; Heavy Rain</strong></p>

<p>Shelby seems unassuming – a private investigator working to find the Origami Killer. However, he&#8217;s revealed to be the killer, manipulating the likes of Lauren (his partner), Ethan Mars and families that suffered due to his murders. It&#8217;s somewhat out of left field, especially since you play as him at various points, but Shelby&#8217;s motive is to ultimately test Ethan and find someone capable of saving their son, which his father failed to do when his brother John drowned in his childhood.</p>

From the level of freedom they promise to the amount of content they deliver, there&#8217;s plenty to love about them- or, well, at least when they&#8217;re well designed, that is. At the same time though, we&#8217;re also firm believers that there are certain games and certain types of experiences that absolutely should not be open world. Either because of their pacing, their focus, their design philosophies, or any number of other reasons, there are some franchises that we feel would lose themselves a little bit if they decided to go open world. Here, we&#8217;re going to talk about a few such franchises.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>RESIDENT EVIL</strong></p>

<p>We quite like the idea of a survival horror game that takes place in a large and open setting and offers the freedom of an open world game. <em>The Evil Within 2&#8217;s </em>semi-open world sections, for instance, are among the game&#8217;s highlights. But <em>Resident Evil </em>most certainly isn&#8217;t a franchise that should veer in that direction. The level design is always a core pillar of any new <em>Resident Evil </em>game, and navigating the series&#8217; trademark settings with their meticulous design is always a massive part of the experience. Going open world would dilute that massively, to say the very least. <em>Resident Evil Village&#8217;s </em>hub and spoke did, to be fair, boast more open ended design on a macro level, and yes, the game was better for it, but we wouldn&#8217;t want to see a <em>Resident Evil </em>game trying to take that design philosophy to its absolute extreme.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The time Valve spent away from developing and releasing any major new games (no,&nbsp;<em>Artifact&nbsp;</em>doesn&#8217;t count) was a frustrating and seemingly interminable one for no few people, but it seems like the company is finally ready to get back in the thick of things. In 2020, it released the incredible VR shooter&nbsp;<a href="https://gamingbolt.com/half-life-alyx-review-a-watershed-moment-for-vr-gaming"><em>Half-Life: Alyx</em></a>, while recently, it also announced&nbsp;<a href="https://gamingbolt.com/counter-strike-2-announced-launches-in-summer-2023"><em>Counter-Strike 2</em></a>, which is due out this year. However, it seems it might also have another game in the works- and it could be one that fans have been begging for for years.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s certainly what the LinkedIn profiles of some current and former Valve employees suggest. To be more specific, Valve artist <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/boyang-zhu-b5450624/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boyang Zhu&#8217;s</a> profile mentions that he&#8217;s been working on an unannounced game for the developer since joining in January last year.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/manderson111/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michael Anderson</a>, who was a level designer at Valve for two years before leaving earlier year, mentions on his profile that while at the company, he was working on an unannounced title with &#8220;ambitious, never-before-seen gameplay&#8221;, for which he also made &#8220;puzzles from scratch&#8221;.</p>
<p>Those descriptions are quite vague, as one might expect for an unannounced title, but as you may have guessed, fans are speculating that they might be referring to a new&nbsp;<em>Portal&nbsp;</em>game. Fans of the series have been waiting for a new instalment for well over a decade at this point, but as is often the case with Valve franchises, it has been unable to get past its second instalment for a long, long time.</p>
<p>Interestingly, bite-sized&nbsp;<em>Portal&nbsp;</em>spinoff&nbsp;<em><a href="https://gamingbolt.com/aperture-desk-job-is-out-now-on-steam">Aperture Desk Job</a>&nbsp;</em>was released last year as a Steam Deck advert of sorts- could that have been Valve dipping its toes in the water in preparation of jumping fully back into the universe with a full-fledged, long-overdue new mainline instalment? One would certainly hope- but for now, hope and speculate is all we can do.</p>
