Certain locations in video games are obviously based on the real world. But what about the not so obvious ones? Take a look at 11 of them here.

The amount of work that goes into creating video game worlds can’t be overstated and as such, many of them take inspiration from real-world locations. This is done rather obviously in games like Grand Theft Auto 5, L.A. Noire, Sleeping Dogs, and many more. However, some titles are a little less obvious about their inspirations. Let’s take a look at 11 video game locations that fit into that category.

Parliament Of Serbia in Belgrade – Half-Life 2

City 17’s European-inspired architecture and aesthetics are fairly easy to recognize, though the Overwatch Nexus is perhaps the closest to being based on an actual building. As the main building for the Overwatch forces, the Nexus was formerly a political building before the Combine invaded. It turns out that it’s actually inspired by the Parliament of Serbia in Belgrade. The similarities between the two buildings, from their general structure to the opening archway are noteworthy, though the signature dome isn’t as defined on the Nexus. Though it’s not outright confirmed in-game, browsing through the texture files reveals the word “parliament” which further hints at the inspiration.

Just a few days after it was originally confirmed, the HD, mobile version for Professor Layton and Curious Village is now available to download for iOS and Android mobile devices. For fans of the original game, there’s also more to look forward to in these new release, including brand new anime cutscenes that were never in the original DS game to begin with.

That, plus new HD remasters of the game’s gorgeous graphics, are the primary attractions this time around (as is the fact that Curious Village still remains one of the best games in the series, and indeed, a great puzzle game that will be right at home in the mobile gaming market). iOS devices at iOS 8 or higher, and Android devices at Android 4.4 or higher, will be able to run the game just fine, so anything bought in the last five years should be good to go on that front. The game will cost $10.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village is available now on DS, iOS, and Android.

This reminds me of a puzzle...

Professor Layton and the Curious Village was a charming visual novel meets puzzle game, with gorgeous graphics, and really quirky and compelling characters, all of which came together to deliver one of the best games on the Nintendo DS. Layton was so successful that it spawned an entire series- albeit none of them came close to matching the original in my opinion.

Now, the very first game will be coming to mobiles. Apple’s official App Store account confirmed that Professor Layton and the Curious Village will be coming to iOS. This is presumably a localized version of the Professor Layton and the Curious Village EXHD release that already came out for mobiles in Japan.

What’s curious (heh) here is that the Apple announcement (which doesn’t specify a release window, to be clear) explicitly mentions Nintendo- Nintendo was the publisher of the game on the DS, but it was developed by Level-5, who also own the IP. Is this a mistake on Apple’s part, or is Nintendo working with Level-5 to bring the game to smartphones, as part of their mobile initiative?

Whatever it is, hopefully we find out more soon. Curious Village is way too good a game to be stuck on a 14 year old handheld forever.
