The developer cites "unsatisfactory results of the evaluation of the scope and commercial potential of the project" as the reason behind its cancellation.

People Can Fly has cancelled Project Dagger, a new action-adventure IP that was in development at its New York studio for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The studio announced the project’s development back in 2020, revealing at the time that it would be published by Take-Two Interactive. In 2022, however, it was announced that the agreement between the two had been terminated, and that People Can Fly would be moving forward with the project with the intention of self-publishing it.

In a recently published report, the developer said it had taken the decision to discontinue further development on Project Dagger due to “unsatisfactory results of the evaluation of the scope and commercial potential of the project.”

“The discontinuation of work on the project is the result of re-analysis of the development plans for projects implemented by the capital group of People Can Fly and introducing changes to these plans in connection with the unsatisfactory results of the evaluation of the scope and commercial potential of the project after redefining the direction of the game’s development,” the developer wrote.

The Outriders developer currently has multiple other projects in development- like Project Maverick, which is being made exclusively for Xbox in collaboration with Microsoft. Project Maverick is based on an existing Xbox IP, and will seemingly be a PvP shooter.

Also in development is Project Gemini, which is being published by Square Enix. Earlier this year, however, it was reported that People Can Fly had reevaluated and shrunk the project’s scope, leading to layoffs at the studio.

People Can Fly is currently also working on a new VR IP, while leaks have claimed that the studio is also developing a PlayStation-exclusive third-person shooter RPG in collaboration with Sony.

People Can Fly says it's "committed to continue" the game's development "within [its] self-publishing pipeline", and has retained full ownership of the IP.

It’s been known for roughly two years at this point that Outriders and Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly had signed into an agreement with Take-Two Interactive that would see the latter publishing a new action-adventure IP developed by the former’s New York studio. It seems, however, that there have been significant developments behind the scenes.

It’s been announced that Take-Two Interactive has terminated its publishing deal with People Can Fly. People Can Fly says that while terms for settlement of advanced payments and the like are yet to be agreed, Take-Two hasn’t exercised its option to retain ownership of the IP, which means the Polish developer retains full ownership of the project and remains completely in charge of its production.

The new IP, which has been in development for two years under the codename Project Dagger, will remain in development. People Can Fly confirms that the title is still in pre-production, with the current plan being to self-publish when it’s ready for launch.

“I assume we will part on good terms, and I don’t see reasons why we couldn’t work with Take-Two on some other project in the future,” says CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski. “We strongly believe in the Project Dagger’s potential and are now committed to continue its development within our self-publishing pipeline. The game is still in pre-production – our team is now focusing on closing combat and game loops and migrate from UE4 to UE5. I’m conscious that this decision will add investments on us, but self-publishing is part of our strategy. Of course, we are not ruling out working with a new publisher if this creates a compelling business opportunity.”

People Can Fly is currently also working on an unannounced new game in collaboration with Square Enix, which was also the publisher for Outriders.
