The studio confirmed in January that it was providing development support on The Coalition and Microsoft's upcoming third-person shooter.

Bulletstorm, Gears of War: Judgment, and Outriders developer People Can Fly announced a couple years ago that it had started development on an Xbox exclusive title codenamed Project Maverick, with rumours claiming later that the game was a PvP shooter based on an existing Xbox IP. It turns out, however, that it’s a game that we already know about.

In January, People Can Fly officially confirmed that it was providing development support on The Coalition and Xbox’s Gears of War: E-Day, and it’s now confirmed it as Project Maverick. Caught by XboxEra, on an About Us page on its official website, the studio lists the upcoming third-person shooter among its ongoing projects, and confirms it as Project Maverick.

People Can Fly is currently also working on Project Gemini alongside Square Enix, and Project Delta, which is based on an IP owned by PlayStation.

Gears of War: E-Day is in development for Xbox Series X/S and PC. A release date hasn’t been announced for the game, but allegedly, the game is targeting a 2026 launch.

The studio announced in June last year that it had partnered with Microsoft to develop a new title in an existing Xbox IP.

In June last year, People Can Fly announced that it had partnered with Microsoft to work on a new game in an existing Xbox IP. Codenamed Project Maverick, the game is being built on a budget of $30-$50 million, though details on what it will actually be have been scant since then.

However, job listings published by the developer seem to give some indication as to what to expect. Specifically, a listing for the position of Senior Level Designer suggests that Project Maverick is going to be a PvP shooter, with the listing mentioning experience with working on shooters and with designing PvP maps under its required qualifications section.

Of course, whether that means the game will be exclusively PvP or if it will feature a PvP component alongside PvE or solo modes remains to be seen. This does raise the question of what IP it is that People Can Fly is working on. The studio has worked on Gears of War in the past with 2013’s Gears of War: Judgment, so is it possible that it’s been entrusted with another game in the series?

People Can Fly has a number of titles currently in development, including a new VR-exclusive IP, a self-published action-adventure game, a new game in partnership with Square Enix, and an alleged RPG shooter in collaboration with PlayStation.

In January, it was reported that the scope for the studio’s Square Enix title had shrunk, leading to over 30 job cuts.

The extraction shooter will feature a similar game loop as other Far Cry titles, except with multiplayer and permadeath.

Of the two Far Cry titles that were rumoured to be in development from a report all the way back in January, a new report indicates that one of the titles, dubbed Project Maverick, will be a Far Cry-themed multiplayer extraction shooter.

According to Insider Gaming, the multiplayer title has changed its scope quite a few times over its development period, with its latest iteration being an under-development extraction shooter set in a fictionalized version of Alaska, named Alashnica.

The game is set to take its cues from its Far Cry predecessors, with players setting out to look for resources. These resources can then be used to craft new equipment. For example, leather from a killed animal can be used to make new gear, while chemicals found in the world will allow players to make gadgets.

In extraction shooter fashion, players will also have a hideout where they can store the things they find and craft. The game will also have permadeath, which means that players will lose all of their character’s progress on death.

The other Far Cry title in development, dubbed Project Blackbird, will be a new mainline entry in the series, and will probably end up titled Far Cry 7.

While the extraction shooter doesn’t yet have a release date, according to Insider Gaming, the game is slated for release before Far Cry 7. The current internal release window for the title is set for April 2025, with an alpha release in early 2024.

Based on an existing Microsoft IP, the project has been fully funded by the publisher and has a budget of $30-$50 million.

People Can Fly of Outriders and Bulletstorm fame has announced a new title funded and published by Microsoft. The developer’s regulatory release revealed that Project Maverick is based on a Microsoft IP and has a total budget of $30-$50 million.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the developer and publisher have worked together. People Can Fly ported the first Gears of War by Epic Games to PC and worked on Gears of War Judgment for the Xbox 360. Which IP it’s been commissioned to work on remains to be seen, but the developer is rumored to be working on a third-person sci-fi RPG shooter for Sony.

Developed alongside Sony’s XDev team, the title is allegedly codenamed “RED.” It has two other projects in the works, one with Square Enix and another called Project Dagger, which was to be published by Take-Two Interactive but is now self-published. Stay tuned for more details on Project Maverick in the coming years.

One is a multiplayer-only extraction-based shooter reportedly set in the Alaskan wilderness, while the other seems to be single-player.

In 2021, Jeff Grubb reported on GamesBeat that the next Far Cry would be a live-service title following the departure of series executive director Dan Hay. However, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson is reporting two new Far Cry games are in development.

One of these is presumed to be a single-player experience, Far Cry 7, while the other is multiplayer-only. They were reportedly one game early on as Project Talisker under Hay before his departure. Far Cry 7 is internally referred to as Project Blackbird, while Project Maverick is the multiplayer title. Ubisoft Montreal is heavily involved in both.

There aren’t a lot of details, but two anonymous sources revealed that Maverick changed several times over the past year. It’s reportedly an extraction-based shooter set in the Alaskan wilderness and features contracts, backpacks and permadeath. Though there is the threat of other players, you’ll need to worry as much, if not more, about the wildlife and freezing weather.

Insider Gaming has seen screenshots of extraction zones, loot chests and more that line up with this premise but can’t publicly show them. Both titles are apparently a couple of years off, at least, and tentatively targeting Fall 2025. Ubisoft responded to the report with, “We don’t comment on rumors or speculation”.

The far-off release lines up with Kotaku’s report on the next Far Cry being further out than Ubisoft originally planned. Time will tell if it manages to hit it, or if there will be delays, as seen with recent projects like Skull and Bones and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

EA Motive's Star Wars game will be revealed on Monday.

EA Motive – the studio behind the single player campaign of Star Wars Battlefront 2 – started teasing a “very unique” Star Wars game it had been working on late last year, and theories about what the project could be started springing up almost immediately. A couple of months later, a leaked PlayStation Store listing spilled the beans on the game – tentatively called Project Maverick, as per said listing – and these past couple of weeks, rumours started swirling that the game would be officially unveiled soon.

Well, it’s happened. Over on Twitter, EA have officially unveiled the game. Though they couldn’t do it before a leak on the official Xbox site, they’ve officially announced Star Wars: Squadrons. A full reveal trailer for the game will be going live this Monday, June 15, at 8 AM Pacific Time. Reports have suggested that this is a flight and flight combat-focused game (Rogue Squadron fans, rejoice!), and the “pilots wanted” in EA’s tweet clearly suggests that as well.

Either, we’ll know more – as well as when the game will release and what platforms it will be coming to – on Monday, so stay tuned for all updates.
