"Nothing more and sci-fi than VR and a big procedural universe."

Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky has teased us endlessly with its procedurally generated sandbox and open world capabilities. It now appears that it could things to another level entirely with support for Project Morpheus, Sony’s PS4 compatible virtual reality headset, and Oculus Rift.

Founder Sean Murray didn’t confirm support when speaking to EDGE but there does seem to be some interest in the same. “I don’t know what I’m allowed to say. It’s something we’re thinking about.

“Morpheus, Oculus…There’s nothing more cool and sci-fi than VR and a big procedural universe. I think that, for the people who want to just explore, and even for the space combat and things like that, it would be a good fit. Let’s put it that way.”

We can agree though Sony hasn’t quite offered a lot of information on when Project Morpheus will release. Oculus Rift releases in early 2016 though – could No Man’s Sky target that window in order to cater to the maximum number of players? We’ll find out in the coming months.

Can Evolution Studios race to the challenge of an even better sequel?

DRIVECLUB released to what many considered as a disappointing launch. A racer build around social features and as some news outlets called the “Forza killer.” Upon release, DRIVECLUB proved to have a substantially fun single player experience; while behind the scenes, Sony worked for well over a month to fix DRIVECLUB’s online stability. Upon completion weeks after launch through numerous patches, DRIVECLUB proved to be a quality arcade-style racer. With fun social options, and stellar tracks in key locations around the world, DRIVECLUB was fine tuned to what was expected on Day One.

With that said, DRIVECLUB lacked a few key functions and ideals we would have liked to see in the game. But that’s what sequels are for! Here is our list of 15 Features we would like to see Evolution Studios implement into DRIVECLUB 2 to rev up our racing desires.

(note: some photos shown from other racers to emphasize desired feature.)

Stability Online

It’s hard to ponder why a game that was delayed ended up being, well, broken. This isn’t the first game that this has occurred in. Master Chief Collection comes to find, in fact. Single player in DRIVECLUB ran smoothly enough, but seriously: who wants to play a racing game by him or her self? Making sure online is functioning on Day 1 is one of the BIGGEST concerns going forward into a game designed for a social experience.

This might lead to one of the most memorable E3 pressers in recent years- in a good or bad way.

Sony’s VR headset, Morpheus, has been known to us for a while now; we’ve seen it in action, and we also have a pretty good idea of its capabilities, but so far, Sony has remained surprisingly mum about it. Though they do show it off a lot, they haven’t attempted to generate the kind of hype for it like what they managed with the PlayStation 4 or even some of their recent games.

However, that may be set to change this E3. VRFocus reports that Project Morpheus will essentially be the central focus of Sony’s E3 presence and showing this year. Sony will be pushing the headset heavily at their E3 presser, and over half of their showfloor space will allegedly be given over to Morpheus, Morpheus games, and Morpheus tech demos.

Morpheus is one of three big upcoming VR headsets, all slated to release within the next twelve months. The other contenders include Valve and HTC’s Vive, and the pioneering Oculus Rift, both of which are being developed for PC. We’ll keep you posted on all the latest VR news, so stay tuned to GamingBolt.

The PS4 styles and profiles into E3 2015 but can Sony sustain its momentum?

One year ago if you asked us to predict what Sony would be preparing for E3 2015, we would have presented a number of different scenarios. Granted, they were all over the place due to Sony’s manifold approach to gaming these days but there seemed to be a relatively strong push for the indies, followed by some new announcements like Bloodborne and The Order: 1886. There were even announcements like Entwined which launched to open the show.

This year appears to be slightly different. We don’t sense a domineering indie initiative like last year, though it’s likely that Sony will devote a significant portion of its conference to the same since there are still exclusive releases like Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and big-name titles like SOMA to look forward to. The PS Vita seems like it’ll be on the back-burner in terms of new announcements as well. We also don’t expect another Powers-type presentation to slow the show down to a halt. So what can we expect?

Morpheus Rises

It would be slightly remiss if Sony didn’t show some kind of progress with its VR headset. There isn’t much confidence in a release date though a release window of sorts seems like a strong possibility. Forget about pricing as well – Sony’s E3 2015 presentation, if it chooses to acknowledge Morpheus, will probably show a game or two while teasing what’s to come. If information from Sony is to believed, this will begin the campaign for games on Sony’s VR headset. Perhaps that new project coming from former Evolution Studios members will finally be teased?

This seems like the most appropriate step. After all, gamers have rather verbally stated their desire to avoid long demos with gimmicks like Kinect and Move. Sony may talk about Morpheus like it’s a real but we’d be stunned if it took up more than 10 minutes at the press conference. Perhaps Sony will see fit to bestow a final name to Project Morpheus for the future?

Release Dates for All

Sony showed off a lot of games last year…and then fumbled by not giving release dates to many of them. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has already been delayed and E3 2015 does seem a little early to provide a new release date (gameplay footage is pretty much a lock though and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will be occupying some stage time as well). So instead, you can likely look forward to games like Kill Strain, Let It Die, Drawn to Death and whatnot finally being dated.

Could E3 2015 also be the place that Sony decides to re-launch DriveClub: PS Plus Edition? It would be an odd move – after all, that release has been synonymous with many, many failings from a prominent first party studio. Why draw attention to it? Then again, it is a significant announcement and if handled correctly, could go a long way towards winning back some of the goodwill that was squandered last October.

We also expect Dark Souls III to be properly revealed at Sony’s conference due to the Bloodborne connection, the latter of which will provide an announcement for the PS4 exclusive’s first expansion. Then there’s Destiny: The Taken King which will likely have a teaser at Sony’s conference along with the promise of exclusive maps and items for PlayStation players. And heck, why not show some footage for Until Dawn while we’re at it?

All The Rest

For some reason, it’s looking more and more likely that a sequel to The Order: 1886 could be launched. There’s been no evidence to indicate the same – as in, none at all – but with the relative length of the first game and it’s open ended nature, E3 seems like a good place to tease a sequel? Regardless, expect Ready At Dawn to have some kind of presence at E3.

A sequel to The Order: 1886 still feels more possible than The Last Guardian finally re-emerging. Another year and another E3 will pass by but we have to wonder if people will ask any questions as to the current state of Team ICO’s adventure. David Cage and Quantic Dream have been missing for a while too but at this point, we wouldn’t put it past Sony to announce Beyond: Two Souls Remastered for the PS4 while Cage teases his first PS4 exclusive title.

The one game that has us somewhat intrigued is Horizon, Guerrilla Games’ third person, open world action RPG. The developer is renowned for the Killzone franchise of first person shooters and a diversion into RPGs would be odd at best. Regardless, the leaked art and concepts show that it’s significantly different from all the usual riff-raff running around. It also seems that, unlike previous suspicions, it won’t be a game that will try to compete with Bungie’s Destiny in the online department (dedicated single-player for the win).

Still the Best Around?

Sony has experienced nothing but success since E3 2013 with its price announcement for the PS4 all the way up to +20 million consoles sold worldwide since its late 2013 launch. However, it’s in somewhat of a conundrum. Unlike the Xbox One, there haven’t been any major must-have titles for the PS4 like Bloodborne. It seemed like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End would have filled that gap but the delay worsened things significantly. inFamous: Second Son has faded into the periphery, The Order: 1886 was a disappointment and DriveClub…still has its fans, despite a horrible launch.

The point is: Sony will be entering with all the momentum in the world but needs to announce AAA titles that will be in consumer’s hands by year end. It needs to have games that people will buy, rather than wait to buy. It’s not like the console has to fear the Xbox One catching up any time soon but it’s better to widen that lead further than become complacent.

As it stands, this E3 will be bigger than ever for Sony. We’ll be looking forward to all the announcements and providing the latest coverage of the event on June 15th so be there or be square. Let us know in the comments what you expect Sony to showcase next week.

After numerous job listings emerged on the Sony Computer Entertainment careers page for a newly established North West Studio in the UK, Sony confirmed to GameSpot that the new studio was established to create games for Project Morpheus, Sony’s proprietary PS4 VR headset. The studio is composed of former Evolution Studios team members who worked on DriveClub.

A Sony representative stated that, “We are dedicated to producing high quality experiences for Project Morpheus, and the creation of this studio allows us to build a small but highly experienced team who can utilize their skills to showcase this exciting new immersive technology.

“We always look to relocate staff throughout the studios, and this is no exception. The new team will be made up of a combination of Evolution staff members and new talent, with a focus on hiring the most highly experienced team possible.”

Sony does have plans to reveal games for Morpheus with hopes of E3 being the starting point. What can we expect from Morpheus, especially with Oculus Rift set to hold its own VR-based event before E3? Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

So at this point, we already know that Sony is planning a ‘PlayStation Experience’ event some time in December, where… well, something big is planned.

How big? Well, if this newly announced list of developers and games that are apparently going to be participating in the event is to be believed, it’s pretty damn big. To wit, the list of developers that Sony has for the PlayStation Experience is pretty extensive, covering a full range of first and third parties, Japanese and western, indie and AAA… you name it, you’ve got it. I’m particularly excited to see Guerrilla Games on there, because that implies that they will be showing their next project there, which has long been rumored to be a new IP. Considering how talented the studio is, I just want them to move on from the mediocre Killzone license already.

In addition, here’s the list of games that are confirmed to be there, although obviously, more, new games may be announced:

Battlefield: Hardline

Big Fest

Bloodborne

DC Universe Online — War of the Light Part II and Legends PvE Co-Op Missions

Destiny Expansion 1: The Dark Below

Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Dying Light

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series

Grim Fandango

Helldivers

Journey (PS4)

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris

Mortal Kombat X

PlanetSide 2

Tales from the Borderlands

Tearaway Unfolded

The Order: 1886

The Tomorrow Children

The Witness

Until Dawn

Sony also promises ‘PlayStation Exclusive Experiences,’ by which it means things like Project Morpheus, which presumably will be shown off to American audiences for the first time.

That’s all great, and I really am looking forward to this event. Just, I wish Atlus was there, showing off Persona 5. Oh well.

'This is bigger than gaming.'

It might look like we are headed towards a virtual reality renaissance/movement, judging solely on the fervor that the upcoming Oculus Rift, and to a lesser extent, Sony’s Morpheus for the PlayStation 4, generate, but to be honest, the average person who doesn’t follow technology or games neither knows nor cares about VR, plus has negative connotations associated with it, thanks to earlier, unsuccessful, aborted attempts at the technology.

There have been many who have said that the coming VR wave is a fad, that it will be like 3D, it will come and fizzle out. Renowned industry analyst Michael Pachter expressed that opinion earlier this year in an exclusive interview with GamingBolt.

Addressing all of these critics and concerns, Oculus Rift founder Palmer Luckey said that most people simply don’t understand the potential applications of virtual reality, which go far beyond just video games.

“I don’t think they understand why it’s relevant to them yet,” Luckey said. “A lot of people, even if they know what VR is, see it as this tool to go in your basement and play Halo. I was about to correct myself and say another game, but that’s what a grandmother would say: ‘Oh, you’re going to plug it into your Nintendo and play Halo.'”

However, he also thinks that that will change soon. “They’re going to see this is relevant to them in their daily lives as a not-pimply-faced-teenage-kid,” he said. “That’s going to be a difficult perception to overcome.”

This actually implies that Luckey is looking at virtual reality as something bigger than just gaming, which is in fact a sentiment shared by Michael Pachter too.

Personally, I’m one of those people who are simply not sold on virtual reality yet. I mean, it’s cool and everything, but no, I just don’t see it taking off.

85% of the work on the VR headset is done, Sony reckons.

One of the coolest things coming out of Sony in the near future isn’t PlayStation Now or PS Vita Remote Play or PlayStation TV or the slew of great games that they have lined up for their consoles, it is Project Morpheus, the virtual reality headset that they have designed to work with the PS4 and its games.

And it’s coming along swimmingly. It was just shown off at the still ongoing Tokyo Game Show, and if that made you eager to get your own grubby mitts on it, the good news is, Sony says that it’s almost done. As in, 85% of the work on it is done by this point.

However, Sony did refuse to say exactly when the headset would release, or how much would it cost, which is a teensy bit suspicious. That said, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida still sounded extremely enthusiastic about the project.

“With the Morpheus and PlayStation 4, we can offer them a totally new virtual reality experience in a lighthearted and fun manner,” he said, citing examples such as virtual travel and education. The 3-D virtual world might allow teachers to show students objects in a way that isn’t possible through textbooks or tablets, he said, hinting that Sony may be thinking of expanding its targeted audience eventually, just as it did so successfully with the PlayStation and PlayStation 2.

Oculus co-founder and creator both also comment on Sony's Project Morpheus.

After teaming up with Samsung to launch a consumer version of Oculus using the Galaxy Note 4, Oculus VR co-founder Nate Mitchell revealed that the default model for Oculus Rift will cost between $200 to $400. It’s not set in stone for the time being.

In conversation with Eurogamer, Mitchell said, “That could slide in either direction depending on scale, preorders, the components we end up using, [or] business negotiations.”

Creator Palmer Luckey further added that, “Whatever it is, it’s going to be as cheap as possible.”

The two also offered their take on Sony’s own VR headset, Project Morpheus. Mitchell said that Morpheus was only a “tech demonstration” and that “There have been lots of things Sony’s shown – they even showed AR glasses a few years ago at CES that were never made into anything.

“So even if they do decide to make it into a real product that ships, it’s on PlayStation 4; we are not on PlayStation 4 so it doesn’t really change our strategy or what we’re making.”

However, both Mitchell and Luckey admit that more competition for Rift would be welcome. Your thoughts? Let us know below.

SCE's Shuhei Yoshida notes that PS Move "was a bit ahead of its time".

Sony hasn’t had the best success with its motion gaming experience. PS Move games are in short supply and there isn’t much enthusiasm from developers on the same. President of Worldwide Studios for SCE Shuhei Yoshida spoke to Pocket-lint about the same and noted that even market demand was low.

“Motion gaming was a big thing, but, like with social games, dance games, music or guitar games, I don’t think there’s a lot of appetite for another motion game at this moment.”

However, Yoshida noted that PS Move “was a bit ahead of its time. So now we are realizing that, when we do Project Morpheus, the one thing you want to do immediately is interact with an object in virtual space, and the one way to do that is that you need a 3D positioning input device, like PS Move.”

There’s no release date or pricing announced for Project Morpheus. What are your thoughts on Morpheus being used with PS Move? Let us know below.
