Sega made some rather big announcements at the recent SXSW panel in celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th anniversary.

It first announced that Sonic Mania was delayed from Spring to Summer. While a reason wasn’t provided, new enemies were teased along with the Flying Battery Zone making a return. There will also be a collector’s edition vinyl album and bonuses for pre-ordering.

Meanwhile, Project Sonic 2017 officially has a name – Sonic Forces, named after the conflict between the forces of good and evil. Running on the new Hedgehog Engine 2, it’s still due to release later this year and Sega showcased a brief gameplay clip. It featured third person gameplay as Sonic moved through the ruined city revealed in last year’s trailer.

Multiple routes through levels, two different styles of gameplay focused on classic Sonic and more have been promised with the gameplay arriving later today for all.

Nintendo Switch’s first party reveals may have been somewhat limited – even if Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild look great – but there’s still plenty to look forward to.

Aside from the next Shin Megami Tensei, Fire Emblem Warriors and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, games like Project Sonic 2017 and Sonic Mania have also been confirmed (as per Sonic Stadium). Other titles like NBA 2K18, Dragon Quest XI, Dragon Quest X, BlazBlue and Minecraft have also been confirmed.

Many of the names in Japanese were translated courtesy of NeoGAF and include Derby Stallion, Taiko no Tatsujin, Arcade Archives, Bandai Namco’s Tales of series and Harvest Moon. Overall, not a bad collection of support though we’re obviously looking forward to more.

Sonic Mania isn’t the only new Sonic the Hedgehog game in development, in honor of Sega’s mascot’s 25th anniversary- fans can also expect a brand new mainline entry into the franchise, a new 3D Sonic game, by the same team that brought us Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, a game that seems to continue evolving the formula of those two games.

Much like Sonic Generations, Project Sonic 2017 will apparently see Classic and Modern Sonic reunite to take on whatever the threat is this time around – and the threat seems to be substantial, given that the setting of the game appears to be full on post apocalyptic – though Sega have clarified and confirmed that this is not a sequel, but a brand new game.

A 3D Sonic game is always a bit hit or miss, but the team developing this specific game has had a good run with Colors and Generations, so I choose to be optimistic- and in the very worst case, we have Sonic Mania if this game goes wrong. Project Sonic 2017 has been announced for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and the NX.
