Class and weapon balancing, the Plasma Gun, new maps, new class abilities and other potential new weapons are coming this year.

Prophecy Games’ Tribes 3: Rivals has entered early access for PC via Steam, offering seven different maps to play on and three classes with six perks. It has a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam so far, with 76 percent positive user reviews, but there are concerns over missing features like text chat, a server browser, vote-to-kick and more.

In the meantime, Prophecy has revealed its early access roadmap for upcoming content. March will see the team focusing on class and weapon balance, improvements to art and bug fixes. April adds a new weapon, the Plasma Gun, and a new Capture the Flag map called Moonrise.

In Q2 2024, another quality update arrives, focusing on bug fixes and class and weapon balance. There will also be new class abilities, potential new weapons, more fixes and a new map based on “community feedback.” Not a lot of talk about quality-of-life improvements or community moderation, but the developer clarifies that the roadmap “may change based on player feedback or development milestones.” Stay tuned in the coming months for more updates.

The Tribes franchise is getting a revival in the form of Tribes 3: Rivals, which seems to feature all of the iconic things you'd expect from the series.

A new video showcasing the official gameplay for upcoming multiplayer shooter Tribes 3: Rivals is out now, courtesy of IGN. The video, which you can check out below, features gameplay from an alpha build of the game.

The video, featuring more than 7 minutes of gameplay, showcases some of the things iconic to the Tribes franchise, including the Disc Launcher weapon, as well as the game’s primary mode of movement which revolves around making use of gravity and slopes to attain high speeds.

Tribes 3: Rivals is a follow-up to Tribes: Ascend, which was developed by Hi-Rez Studios back in 2012. The game is a revival of the classic Tribes franchise—a series of multiplayer shooters with an emphasis on team-based objectives, high-speed movement, and plenty of different traversal options and weapons throughout its classes.

The new Tribes title is being developed by Prophecy Games—a studio originally set up as a separate team in Hi-Rez that eventually ended up separating from the company. Details on Tribes 3: Rivals are sparse, but we do know that the game is slated for release on PC.

The Tribes franchise seems to be set for a major revival with a new game developed by Prophecy Games.

The classic shooter franchise Tribes is getting revived with a new game. Developed by Prophecy Games, the new Tribes title is currently gearing up for playtests, invitations for which are being released through the game’s official Discord channel, according to FPS-Z. The playtests are slated for November 29 and 30.

The game, a follow-up to Tribes: Ascend, is being developed by a studio that was originally founded under the umbrella of Hi-Rez studio, which originally worked on Tribes: Ascend before it moved on to other titles. Prophecy Games has since gone on to become an independent studio.

Details on the game are currently quite sparse aside from a few screenshots released on the game’s Discord channel. Going by these screenshots, however, it looks like the new Tribes game will follow tradition in being a movement-focused multiplayer shooter with unique weapons.

One of the core things that set the Tribes games apart from its contemporaries, as well as to many modern multiplayer shooters, is its emphasis on fast-paced movement with massive maps featuring team-based game modes like Capture the Flag.

The new Tribes title seems to be under development on PC.
