Good bye, old friend/lesser handheld.

If you thought the imminent arrival of the PlayStation Vita 2000/Slim in the UK would bring a price cut to the older model, then think again. Sony will be phasing out the old PS Vita, and as such is running out of stock. That leaves very little reason to provide a price drop.

Speaking to VG247, Sony UK MD Fergal Gara addressed the idea of a price drop. “We don’t need to, there’s very little stock in the trade. It’s all but sold out. On this occasion there’s no immediate need to start discounting the old model.”

How long will it remain on the market? “Weeks. In short, if this model wasn’t coming we’d be running out of stock very fast. The timing’s nice in terms of clearing out the old model.”

The PlayStation Vita 2000/Slim releases in the UK on February 7th and will retail for £180. Will you miss the old model? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

PS Vita 2000 sales are surprisingly strong in its debut.

The latest Media Create Sales charts are in, and surprise, Game Freak’s Pokémon X and Y debuted on top for the 3DS, selling a monstrous 1,866,570 units in its first week. Considering that the game sold 4 million units within the first few days of release worldwide, this isn’t too surprising.

Meanwhile, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V debuted on PS3, selling 360,115 units in its first week. Monster Hunter 4 continued to see strong sales, with 110,208 units sold this week, amounting to 2,652,824 units over its lifetime.

The 3DS XL is still on top, selling 141,245 units this week while the regular 3DS managed 72,325 units sold. Interestingly, this was the week that the PlayStation Vita 2000 debuted. How did the slimmer, lighter, more battery-efficient version do? It managed to bring total PS Vita sales up to 60,166 units, enough to rank the handheld in third place. It still hasn’t beaten the 3DS but this is far better than how the Vita has regularly been performing.

Mike Nagae talks about a "casual yet fresh" design.

What provided the impetus for a new range of colours and some subtle design changes to Sony’s new PlayStation Vita 2000. Speaking to Weekly Famitsu, head of the design project at SCE Mika Nagae stated that, “We wanted the new Vita to be accessible by anyone, regardless of age or gender. So I discussed things with the designers, trying to come up with casual, yet fresh and unique colors we could use. The colors have been pretty basic up to now, but the new Vita is trying to change that image by taking a different approach to coloring.”

Apparently this meant making the speaker holes more “cue”. “In addition, the speaker holes have also been rearranged into this kind of flower shape which I, at least, think is cute.

“The shape of the buttons has changed as well; the buttons jut out a bit more, making them easier to push and control. Of course, the weight and fit of the system is still suited for gameplay, and it still feels the same as before to control. It’s something that I hope people can try out for themselves”.

The 1 GB memory will certainly help those start gaming early, but he Nagae recommends getting a larger memory card for those who download games regularly. Currently, the PS Vita 2000 is scheduled to release on October 10th.
