Tons of new features included.

While some lucky users can begin experiencing the features of PlayStation 4 Update 5.50 as of today with the rollout of the beta, the rest of us are going to have to settle with a PlayStation Blog rundown of what we can look forward to when, what Sony is calling the “KEIJI” update, finally launches. With the numbering of the update suggesting a half step instead of a complete overhaul, expectations should be kept in check.

Play Time Management is introduced, and largely lifts the parental controls features right from the Nintendo Switch. Guardians can set time limits or windows for play, manage or add time from their smartphone or PC and force log-out the child if needed. The quick menu will see some adjustments for friends and music controls, and background music can now be played with PS Now title as well.

Also interestingly, the PS4 Pro receives a system level Supersampling mode. Much like what the Xbox One X launched with natively, this will allow the PS4 Pro users with a 1080P set to enjoy a downscaled 4K image, giving them a cleaner image. Many “Pro enhanced” games included this on a software basis, but this brings the feature to the system level for wider compatibility.

You can see a detailed rundown of every feature on the PlayStation Blog, but the ability to customize tournaments team page, set your own images as a home screen background, delete notifications, and library UI tweaks including the ability to hide old content such as the Destiny Beta are all included. What are your thoughts on KEIJI? Let us know down below.

The next PS4 update seems to be on the way.

Sony continues to refine the PlayStation 4 experience through incremental firmware updates, and it seems we can expect a new one soon, as
PlayStation Blog Japan has just put out the call for gamers who are brave enough to help them beta test the next relatively major update, 5.50.

5.00, “Nobunaga” came to us last October and overhauled a whole bunch of systems relating to community features like friends list management and team tournaments, among other things. The big question here is what 5.50 will bring, since it seems big enough to want a wide pool of beta testers, but not so big as to be worth that whole numeral jump to 6.00.

PlayStation Blog NA and Europe should jump on the testing train looking for their own applicants sometime soon, so if you’re brave enough to risk a less stable OS to check out some new features ahead of time, perhaps look out for it.
