The studio is reportedly pitching new titles, but nothing has been greenlit, and the future of the Destiny franchise remains unknown.

It’s the end of the road for Bungie’s live service shooter Destiny 2, which still feels insane to type after it’s been going strong (and hanging on) since 2017. While there won’t be any new content updates after June 9th, there was some hope when the developer said it was focusing on “incubating its next games.”

Unfortunately, any hopes for Destiny 3 might be shelved for the time being. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier spoke to “people familiar with the studio’s plans” who claimed that the sequel isn’t planned for immediate production. Furthermore, it’s planning to lay off a “significant number” of employees. How many exactly remains unknown.

Right now, pitching new titles (including new entries in the Destiny franchise) is underway, but nothing has been greenlit. Schreier noted that Bungie is one of the “more expensive studios to operate,” both due to its Seattle location and its experienced staff. While you may think Sony would try to preserve as many as possible, it likely mandated the layoffs to counteract the studio’s hefty impairment losses.

And if it wasn’t obvious already, especially after the delay to Destiny 2’s Shadow and Order Update (which has since been renamed to Monument of Triumph), it seems some prior Destiny staff are now working on Marathon. Not that the extraction shooter has been doing huge numbers, but Sony is hopeful and committed to it. For now.

At more than 85 million sales, Rockstar's 2019 magnum opus and one of the most acclaimed games of all time achieves another milestone.

While Rockstar is focused on releasing Grand Theft Auto 6 this November, its existing titles continue to perform well. As reported in Take-Two’s latest financial results, Red Dead Redemption 2 has crossed 85 million units sold-in since November 2019.

Why is this such a big deal? It’s officially surpassed Wii Sports as the third-best-selling game of all time, coming in right behind Grand Theft Auto 5 (which is almost at 230 million units sold). It’s a huge milestone, especially considering that Red Dead Redemption 2 hasn’t had any updates or massive changes in recent years.

Sure, there’s Red Dead Online, which saw new features, missions and Specialist Roles, but it stopped receiving content updates in 2022 when Rockstar announced it was focusing resources on Grand Theft Auto 6. There have been rumors circulating about a potential Enhanced version, but no official announcement has been forthcoming.

Regardless, Red Dead Redemption 2 stands as one of the best games of all time, receiving universal praise throughout the years. It’s even inspired other open-world titles in various ways, whether it’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Crimson Desert. Check out our review here for more details, including why it continues to stand the test of time.

"We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made that journey with us," said the developer, who promised a "new beginning."

After months of silence, Bungie has finally announced what’s next for Destiny 2, and as it turns out, it’s the end. Almost nine years since launch, the looter shooter will receive its final content update on June 9th.

“For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all. Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.”

What it essentially means is that “active development” on the title is ending. It will remain playable, just like the original Destiny, but you shouldn’t expect any significant new additions (or meaningful bug fixes, by the looks of it). What’s next for the studio? A “new beginning” as it begins “work incubating our next games.”

“We’re proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created. Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged lifelong memories and friendships with you all.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made that journey with us. From the deepest part of our hearts, thank you, and we’ll see you in the stars.”

While it may come as a shock for some, it’s also somewhat expected after The Final Shape. Despite strong critical acclaim, the expansion – which marked the end of the decade-long Light and Darkness Saga – reportedly sold less than the more maligned Lightfall.

Bungie would face layoffs and change its content strategy to accommodate two yearly expansions, while shifting focus towards a new narrative about The Nine. The Edge of Fate received some praise for the same, but many of its other additions, including the Portal, gear tiers, Matterspark and whatnot, faced extensive backlash.

Renegades was a better effort, especially with its introduction of the Praxic Blade and better story missions, but it failed to really push the looter shooter to new horizons. Whether this announcement means Bungie is now focusing on Destiny 3 remains to be seen. But for now, it’s good night and good luck to those that remain.

Paweł Sasko wrote about having to figure out the narrative behind the game's iconic quest lines, like the one with The Bloody Baron.

Celebrating the fact that conceptualization work on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt began back in February 2012, lead quest designer Paweł Sasko has revealed some interesting details about the RPG’s development. In a lengthy social media post, Sasko wrote about the early offices of CD Projekt RED, having just finished shipping The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and getting to work on The Witcher 3.

“It’s February 2012. A former factory in Warsaw. Red brick, wooden folding chairs, the smell of an old building that has been a hundred things before. Around 80 of us, the team that just shipped The Witcher 2,” he wrote.

“The lights dim. Game director and executive producer speak briefly about new game we are going to make. Few sentences change the air in the room. The next game will be an open world. At the end, they show one image on the screen – it’s Geralt, but older, with a beard.”

Throughout the post, Sasko wrote about the many challenges he faced when designing some of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s most iconic quests, like Family Matters, which involved the Bloody Baron. It took him quite a few attempts to nail the finer details of the story, including the Slavic folktale-inspired Botchling. However, he faced bigger pushback when he proposed that (spoilers if you haven’t completed the base game, turn back now before it’s too late)…

…That Vesemir, who served as as father figure to Geralt, should die.

“Then comes Battle of Kaer Morhen,” he wrote. “The story outline is just two paragraphs. In a meeting, I propose that Vesemir dies. First reaction is wide eyes and silence. The weight of it is exactly what the act needs. Ciri’s outburst, the moment she throws the Wild Hunt back, requires that the floor fall out from under her first. I prototype meteors, rifts opening in the forest, Wild Hunt pouring out of them, the ride back to the keep on horseback. So much of it does not work. Technical issues. The quest flow is unclear. Review feedback I get is negative, so I rebuild. Pieces start to hold. I begin to see why something works and why the thing next to it does not. Through repetition I truly start understanding the craft.”

Sasko also wrote about how it took the team nine months to write out the main storyline of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, with all the other development teams eagerly waiting for the writing to be finished so that they could start building the rest of the game.

“For the first nine months all of us write the main story quests, because every other department is eagerly waiting,” Sasko wrote. “Level has not even grass yet. RED Engine 3 is still finding its shape. But we keep moving. I write much more than then we need for the game, because we pick only the best. Priscilla’s concert in Novigrad is next. Then the The Last Wish. Some of it is designed last minute.”

He caps off the post by celebrating the fact that it has been 11 years since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was originally released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The fact that he once more brings up the Bloody Baron quest line indicates that he is quite proud of the story.

“Today it has been 11 years. Over 60 million copies. A Polish village monster from a threshold burial lives now in the imagination of players on six continents. A Bloody Baron most of those players chose to forgive. A female bard’s concert in a tavern that players adapt and recreate,” he wrote.

In the meantime, CD Projekt RED is hard at work on a number of projects, including The Witcher 4 and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.

Players can also engage in Avatar Arcade, facing off against CPU Masters or embarking on a Battle Tour for consecutive fights.

As if Ingrid joining Street Fighter 6’s playable roster wasn’t enough, Capcom has gone and thrown in new game modes designed to help you grow your Avatar.

First up is Random Avatar Matches, a matchmaking system meant to maintain a level playing field by opening up all the gear and special abilities, gauge limit unlocks, accessories, and Super Arts while using Level Sync to ensure your opponent is capable of going toe to toe with you. That’s an interesting way to guarantee match-ups that could push your skills to their absolute limit.

Then there’s Avatar Arcade, which pits you against a line-up of CPU-controlled Masters, each of which has special rewards and individual progression bars to unlock. Your Avatar gets to level up while also picking up loads of new stuff and more, making this a great place to grind out a few levels. What’s more, you can choose to either spar with specific masters or take on a bunch of them with Battle Tour. It’s a great alternative to World Tour, especially for those who want to engage in non-level-synced Avatar battles through the Battle Hub.

We’re curious to see whether Ingrid’s world-shattering abilities in her teaser trailer are somehow connected to these new modes. The good news is that we won’t have to wait too long to find out, as all this content goes live on May 28th.

PS5 players who own it on PS4 can grab the $9.99 upgrade for better performance, while Xbox One owners will get a free upgrade.

THQ Nordic has announced that Darksiders Warmastered Edition is out now on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The publisher has celebrated the launch with the release of a brand new trailer, which you can check out below. Those who already own Darksiders Warmastered Edition on PS4 will be able to get their hands on the current-gen version through a $9.99 upgrade pack. Xbox One owners, on the other hand, will get the upgrade for free.

PS4 owners who want to pick up a copy of Darksiders Warmastered Edition will be able to continue to do so at its $19.99 price tag. PS5 players who don’t already own the game can grab it for $29.99. Unfortunately, while the upgrade from the Xbox One to the Xbox Series X/S version of the title is free, the price of the Xbox One version as a whole is going up to $29.99.

The trailer focuses on a conversation that the protagonist, War, is having with one of the many demons he faces throughout the game, asking him a simple question: “Would you serve in heaven? Or rule in hell?” War responds to this by saying, “I choose what once the cowards did not.” The conversation is broken up by a medley of the action-packed gameplay of Darksiders Warmastered Edition, including many of its boss fights across its various dungeons.

The upgrades brought along in Darksiders Warmastered Edition include stable 60 FPS gameplay, native 4K rendering, as well as support for a Photo Mode to make use of the visuals.

Darksiders was originally released in 2010 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. The Warmastered Edition served as a major remaster of the title in 2016, coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Wii U. It is worth noting that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades for the title don’t really bring in any additional content over the original release.

The story of the original Darksiders revolves around the trials and tribulations of one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse – War – who survives a legendary war between heaven and hell. Accused of having prematurely started the war with his sheer arrival, War has to set off on a quest to prove his innocence in the eyes of the Charred Council, and in the process, hunt down those actually responsible for breaking the Seven Seals.

In the aftermath of this major war between heaven and hell, Earth has been left as a ruined apocalypse, with most of humanity having died off long ago. Instead, various places across the planet are now the domains of angels and demons that War must confront to get to the bottom of the mysteries.

In gameplay terms, Darksiders took quite a few cues from the classic God of War games, as well as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Along with engaging in brutal combat, players also have to solve environmental puzzles by making use of new equipment that they can find throughout the world.

In the meantime, Gunfire Games has officially confirmed that it is working on Darksiders 4 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Re-Logic also confirms that the game's world will "remain vibrant and alive for as long as we have anything to say about it."

It seems like only yesterday that we were talking about Terraria hitting the 35-million mark on lifetime sales across all platforms. Well, that number has now doubled over the intervening years, per developer Re-Logic in a new celebratory announcement. Of the whopping 70 million sold, PC continues to dominate at 39.6 million, followed surprisingly by mobile at 19.7 million and consoles at 10.7 million.

Average PC players per day in the past year reached 461,000 (with almost half on tModLoader), peaking at 1.4 million. Your average fan has put in 101 hours and 18 minutes on the platform, but mod enjoyers are just as enthusiastic, with 89 hours and 52 minutes on average.

While update 1.4.6 is on the way, Re-Logic seems well and truly done with proclaiming its next update as the last, with even more support to come. “How that will work and what those entail will be shared as we go along. You will want to stay tuned for that!” it said on Steam.

“Beyond that, we have other plans and ideas that we will share when the time is right, but suffice to say that the world of Terraria remains and will remain vibrant and alive for as long as we have anything to say about it! Here’s to 15 more years… and beyond!”

If you’re thinking about diving back in, or perhaps trying it out for the first time, you’ll be pleased to know that a physical 15th Anniversary Collector’s Edition is on the way, with pre-orders likely to open up in June and a release date next year. The included items remain to be properly revealed, but a model of the player’s heart and a figure of what could be the infamous Moon Lord are seemingly included.

There are two very familiar faces you can add to your selection of heroes, and they're quite potent when you find yourself in a pinch.

If you were starting to think that MARVEL Cosmic Invasion has been rather quiet since it impressed us last year, we’ve got some good news for you.

A new trailer (showcased below) has just dropped, announcing the addition of two new DLC characters who you’re definitely going to want to add to your collection. First off is Cyclops, the X-Men’s fearless leader, who makes use of his optic blasts to control the space around him quite efficiently. He comes highly recommended as a viable option against enemies who like to attack from above.

Joining Cyclops is The Thing, the former pilot and current tank for the Fantastic Four. His imposing size belies his agility, and he’s quite dangerous up close with grappling moves that can devastate opponents if you play your cards right. A versatile pairing, you can see how well he works with She-Hulk in the trailer. We’re already thinking about all the synergies we could dig up with characters from the base game.

Cyclops and The Thing are part of a new $3.99 DLC bundle that’s available now. Tribute Games also announced that it would add two more playable characters this year, alongside a brand new game mode. Stay tuned for more details on when they’ll drop.

The Molasses Flood-developed multiplayer spin-off to The Witcher could be making significant steps forward after its 2023 reboot.

It’s been a while since Project Sirius, a multiplayer-focused spin-off to The Witcher series, has had any substantial updates. That may change in the near future as Kwan Perng has joined CD Projekt RED’s Boston team, serving as lead writer on the project. He’s best known for his work on the critically acclaimed Destiny 2 expansion, The Final Shape, and Guild Wars 2’s End of Dragons.

“It will be some time before I can talk about the project,” he said on LinkedIn, “but in the meantime, I’ve been immersing myself in the dark and eclectic universe of The Witcher. It’s humbling to get the opportunity to tell stories in this world and in the company of such talented developers.”

Perng’s hiring could indicate significant steps forward for the project, which has seemingly been in limbo since its announcement. Developed by The Molasses Flood, a reboot in 2023 led to lay-offs for 29 employees – nearly half of the total team.

At the time, CD Projekt RED said the team’s composition changed to match the project, though not so much on the former’s side. Perhaps this is a sign of the Boston studio taking a more active role (while The Molasses Flood is more tertiary). How this will affect other upcoming projects, including Project Orion, aka Cyberpunk 2, remains to be seen.

Either way, we’ve yet to see any gameplay or details on Project Sirius. It was announced as an “innovative take on The Witcher universe” with “unforgettable tale for existing Witcher fans and new audiences.” It will have spent nearly four years in development by November this year, but judging from Perng’s post, we may have to wait longer for a reveal. As always, stay tuned for updates as they arrive.

Almost three years after its initial announcement, Circle 5's asymmetrical multiplayer title will launch on PlayStation 4.

Out of nowhere, Circle 5 Publishing has announced that Primal Carnage: Evolution will launch on May 28th for PS4. A new gameplay trailer is available, featuring what else, but dinosaurs and humans colliding in matches. Despite launching for a previous-gen console, the remaster also supports increased resolutions on PS4 Pro and PS5.

At this point, you’re probably wondering. “Remaster?” Yes, Primal Carnage: Evolution is based on 2015’s Primal Carnage: Extinction, an asymmetrical multiplayer title for PC and PS4, which features a team of human players battling dinosaurs (also controlled by other players). Announced in September 2023, Evolution offers more dinosaurs, far more customisation options, and a “wealth” of new content for players.

That said, the original didn’t really garner much favor among critics – it has a 46 Metascore based on ten reviews. Steam is more positive, though – out of the 4,910 user reviews, 84 percent recommend the game, earning it a “Very Positive” rating. Strangely enough, Primal Carnage: Evolution isn’t coming to PC, though it already has microtransactions ready to go for launch in the form of premium currency called Phoenix Points.

We’ll wait and see how it pans out, but unfortunately, it all feels like a holding pattern until Capcom finally announces the next Dino Crisis.
