The base PS5 will cost $100 more, while the PlayStation Portal costs $50. However, the PS5 Pro is increasing by a whopping $150.

PlayStation 5 consoles and the PlayStation Portal will cost significantly more starting on April 2nd in response to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” The price increases will affect the United States, UK, Europe and Japan, with the PS5 retailing for $649.99/£569.99/€649.99/¥97,980 (up from $549.99/£479.99/€499.99/¥79,980).

The PS5 Digital Edition will cost $599.99/£519.99/€599.99/¥89,980, while the PlayStation Portal is slated to cost $249.99/£219.99/€249.99/¥39,980 (which thankfully isn’t the biggest jump). However, those looking to purchase the PS5 Pro may want to wait for the PlayStation 6 at this rate. Currently retailing for $749.99 in the United States, it will cost a whopping $899.99 after next week.

That translates to £789.99 (up from £699.99) in the UK, €899.99 (up from €799.99) in Europe and ¥137,980 (an increase from ¥119,980) in Japan.

“We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide,” said the publisher. At least it hasn’t begun pricing physical and digital editions of a game differently, like Nintendo (unlike Blu-ray disc manufacturing, which suddenly skyrockets in the coming months).

Of course, this is far from the first price increase for any of these regions. The base PS5 saw prices jump in 2022 for Europe, Canada, Japan, and other regions due to “high global inflation rates.” Japan saw a second price increase in August 2024, while last year, the United States experienced its first major price increase, with the PS5 costing $549.99 (from $499.99) and the PS5 Pro costing $749.99 (up from $699.99).

After its ¥55,000 variant became available, the PS5 Digital Edition sold an estimated 23,381 units in two days, according to Famitsu.

Aside from Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Elden Ring Nightreign – The Forsaken Hollows, this month’s State of Play Japan didn’t really have much to offer. However, Sony’s region-locked PS5 Digital Edition, retailing for ¥55,000 (roughly $357), is seemingly a success.

Famitsu’s estimated hardware sales for the week of November 17th to 23rd have been revealed, and the PS5 Digital Edition is sitting at second place with 23,381 units sold. Combined with PS5 Pro (11,367) and the base PS5 (2,235), the console family’s total sales reached 36,983. And this with the region-locked version spending only two days on the market.

Compare this to the previous week’s estimates, where the PS5 Digital Edition sold a meager 489 units and the entire line-up was estimated at just 5,855 sales. A six-fold increase is probably more than Sony expected and should go a long way towards the company’s plans for 90 million units by the end of the year.

Globally, the PS5 has shipped a whopping 84.2 million units. It already surpassed the PlayStation 3’s lifetime install base in the United States.

Pre-orders open on November 13th in the region, with the console only usable with Japanese PlayStation Network accounts.

Following the Nintendo Switch 2’s example, Sony announced a new Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition. Launching on November 21st for ¥55,000 (about $357), it’s only usable with PlayStation Japan PSN accounts and with the region set to the same.

Considering the all-languages Digital Edition costs ¥72,980 after last year’s second price increase, it’s a pretty good deal. However, it doesn’t contain a Blu-ray disc drive, so with the 825 GB SSD, you might feel the space crunch more than usual. Of course, it’s possible to purchase the disc drive separately if necessary.

Otherwise, it’s pretty much similar to the current Digital Edition, save for a “partially renewed” body and cover with a matte texture. Pre-orders begin on November 13th at 10 AM JST.

While the announcement may have come out of nowhere, Sony recently announced plans to push for 90 million PS5 consoles by the end of 2025. Clearly, this is a step in that direction, if not a means to bypass tariffs.

The entire collection has already sold out on PlayStation Direct, with scalpers reselling them at exorbitant prices on eBay.

Pre-orders are now available for the PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection, a line-up of consoles and accessories with PlayStation One styling. The PS5 Pro – 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle is the priciest, retailing for $999.99 (disc drive not included) on PlayStation Direct.

With only 12,300 produced, it’s a significantly bigger deal than the rest of the collection. As expected, it’s sold out, with scalpers reselling their pre-orders for several times more in Europe and the UK via eBay, that too successfully.

Aside from the PS5 Pro bundle, there are 30th Anniversary versions of the PS5 Digital Edition for $499.99, followed by the PlayStation Portal and DualSense Edge at $219.99 each. The regular DualSense is the cheapest at $79.99. And yes, they’re also sold out.

The PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection launches on November 21st. Meanwhile, the regular PS5 Pro, which retails for $699.99, launches on November 7th.
The line-up also features a PlayStation One-stylized DualSense, DualSense Edge, PlayStation Portal, and PS5 Digital Edition.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Sony has announced a limited edition line-up of PS5 consoles and accessories that evoke the PlayStation One’s aesthetic. That’s right – you can own a PS5 Pro or PS5 Digital Edition in the classic grey shade. Check out the trailer below – the line-up launches on November 21st.

The PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle includes the console, a DualSense and DualSense Edge, and the DualSense Charging Station. It even has a console cover for the disc drive (still sold separately, unfortunately). Fortunately, it has a Vertical Stand and some collector’s items, including cable ties based on the PlayStation Shapes.

The PS5 Digital Edition 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle includes the same items and Vertical Stand, albeit with only one DualSense and a console cover. You can also pick up 30th Anniversary Limited Edition versions of the PlayStation Portal, DualSense and DualSense Edge.

Of course, quantities are limited – the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary bundle will only have 12,300 units, each etched with numbers indicating the date of the PS One’s launch. Pre-orders for the bundle alongside the PlayStation Portal and DualSense Edge (standalone) begin on September 26th via PlayStation Direct and retailers.

The same applies to the PS5 Digital Edition bundle from PlayStation Direct, though pre-orders at retailers start on October 10th. Finally, the DualSense Wireless (standalone) is only available to pre-order from retailers on September 26th.

Meanwhile, the “regular” PS5 Pro launches on November 7th, retailing for $699.99.
Other peripherals seeing price increases include the Media Remote Control, HD Camera and different colors for the DualSense.

The new PS5 Slim will retail for the same price as the original model in the United States and Europe. However, it’s increasing for Japan, which marks the second time in less than a year. However, that’s not all, as the Japan PlayStation Blog has announced price increases for various PS5 peripherals starting October 18th.

These include the DualSense Wireless Controller (White and Midnight Black), going from ¥7,678 to ¥9,480. The Cosmic Red, Nova Pink, Galactic Purple, Starlight Blue and Gray Camouflage versions will cost ¥9,980 instead of ¥8,228, while the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset goes from ¥10,978 to ¥12,980. Finally, the HD Camera will cost ¥7,980, up from ¥6,578, while the Media Remote Control will go from ¥3,278 to ¥3,980. All prices are including tax.

Other regions haven’t seen these accessories increase in price. Sony also hasn’t revealed the reason for their increase, much like the upcoming PS5 Slim. Regardless, it’s something to remember, especially for those picking up the new models in November.

The model bundled with a Blu-ray disc drive will retail for ¥66,980, while the Digital Edition will cost ¥58,980 upon launch in November.

Sony has announced a redesign for the PS5, which is lighter and slimmer while sporting a detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive. Unfortunately, despite prices staying the same for Europe and the United States, they’re being raised for Japan.

The console currently retails for ¥60,478, while the Digital Edition costs ¥49,478. The PS5 Slim costs ¥66,980, while the Digital Edition will be ¥58,980. It may seem like a big deal only for those who want to upgrade to the newer model, but once the current models’ stock depletes, the new models will be the default.

This is the second price increase for the console in Japan, the first occurring last year in August. Sony hasn’t revealed why the region is paying more for the PS5 Slim, especially when the hardware and features (like expandable storage) remain unchanged. It launches in November worldwide, so stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

A PlayStation spokesperson confirms there are "no changes with the new model," which launches in November for $499.99.

Sony finally unveiled the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive or “PS5 Slim”, a new model with 30 percent reduced volume and lighter weight than the current design following months of rumors. It sports a detachable Blu-ray disc drive (which Digital Edition owners can purchase separately) and a 1 TB SSD (compared to the original’s 825 GB).

It has a four-panel design and lighter profile, but the hardware and functionality remain the same. Speaking to IGN, a PlayStation spokesperson confirmed “there are no changes with the new model.” This includes installing expandable storage via a removable back panel, like a new solid-state drive, though it must support PCIe Gen4 and be an M.2 SSD.

The PS5 Slim launches in November, though a more concrete release date is yet to be announced. It will retail for $499.99 in the United States, while the Digital Edition retails for $449.99. The Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will retail for $79.99. Once stock for the current model depletes, the PS5 Slim will be the default.

The new PS5 will retail for $499.99, and the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive is available separately at $79.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition.

After months of rumors, Sony has finally confirmed a new PS5 model launching this November. It sports the same hardware but a lighter and slimmer form factor. There’s also a detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, sold separately for $79.99 for those who purchase the PS5 Digital Edition. Check out the trailer below.

With 30 percent lower volume than the previous model, the new PS5 is 18 percent lighter than the previous model (24 percent if you pick up the Digital Edition). It has four cover panels, one housing the Blu-ray Disc Drive, and a 1 TB SSD. The PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will cost $499.99, while the PS5 Digital Edition retails for $449.99.

While a horizontal stand is included, a new vertical stand, compatible with all models, will be available separately for $29.99. Sony also confirmed that once the current model’s inventory has sold out, the new PS5 model will be the only one available for the foreseeable future. Stay tuned for more details on the new PS5 in the meantime.

Interestingly, it seems that Sony may take on losses with its PS5 Digital Edition as well.

With the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S revealed, it’s almost hard to believe their prices. The former retails for $499, which is already pretty good, but it’s the latter that’s especially interesting with its 1440p resolution and up to 120 FPS performance for just $299. Given that it has the same CPU and an SSD, is Microsoft taking on losses with that price?

VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb believes so. He noted on Twitter that the company is “taking a loss on both the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X” before noting that it “seems” like the former is causing a bigger loss. Interestingly, Grubb also believes that Sony’s PS5 Digital Edition is “absolutely going to take a loss.” The price point for both PS5 consoles hasn’t been officially revealed so we’ll have to wait and see.

Regardless, it’s hard to deny the value that the Xbox Series S provides especially with Microsoft expanding its Xbox All-Access initiative to more countries around the world. It’s out on November 10th along with the Xbox Series X with pre-orders opening on September 22nd. Stay tuned for more details and updates in the meantime.
