God of War (2018) might not stand toe-to-toe with the likes of God of War 2 and 3 as far as the sheer quantity bonkers set-piece boss fights is concerned, but the optional fights against the Valkyries almost made up for that. And the Valkyrie Queen was the hardest, most memorable of them all. Countless God of War players have gone up against her again and again and again and come away with nothing to show for it. One of the greatest athletes of all time is just as formidable in 8-bit form as he used to be in real life at his prime. Starring as the final hurdle in Punch-Out!!, Mike “Iron Mike” Tyson pulled no punches. Right off the bat, he hurled a barrage of attacks at the player that required a series of precise dodges, while what followed was a series of fast, hard-hitting attacks that could make even the most season players sweat.

Dr. Mario seems innocent enough from a gameplay perspective. Simply match the coloured capsules and defeat the viruses. From an ethical perspective though, it’s unbelievable. You have Mario, who clearly has no doctor’s license, simply feeding pills of any kind in the hope that something, anything will kill the viruses. It’s like a twisted game to him…which would explain a lot.

Punch-Out!! Headlines April’s Lineup of NES Classic Games for Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo has revealed the games that will be joining the roster of the NES Classic games that subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online service will be able to play this month. Players have some of the best NES games to look forward to: Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, which was originally Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan is the first of these.

The second is Punch-Out!!, the legendary and iconic boxing game that remains one of the most beloved NES titles of all time. Punch-Out!! demands almost inhuman reflexes to beat properly, and I imagine many players will find the enhancements such as save states to their benefit when playing it on Switch.

Finally, Star Soldier will be the final game joining the lineup. It’s a shoot-em-up developed by Hudson Soft, and it has a cult following; maybe its inclusion on the NES lineup on Switch means more people will be able to check it out for themselves.

All of these games will be available on April 10.

For every boss fight in today’s modern age that makes us question our patience, there are boss fights from the old days that did much more. These weren’t bosses that were simply difficult. No, these bosses were metaphorical mountains to climb and by the time you beat them, there was that feeling of something incredible being accomplished. Let’s take a look at 14 of the hardest retro boss fights of all time.

C’thun – World of Warcraft (2006)

If you were bold enough to battle C’thun in World of Warcraft, then you were in for some pain. Introduced with patch 1.9 in 2006, C’thun was insanely tough, randomly swallowing select players and digesting them slowly. Such was C’thun’s power that he could insta-kill raid group members with a single beam attack. Even weakening him for short periods of time did little to affect his health. When Blizzard realized that C’thun was effectively unbalanced, it stepped in to nerf him. Those who were there, however, will remember his terror forever.
