Gear also won't give you a huge edge, stats-wise, during PvP.

Blizzard Entertainment will be introducing some sweeping changes to World of Warcraft with its next big expansion Legion, especially when it comes to the competitive multiplayer or PvP aspect of the game.

In a new blog post, Blizzard explained that players would no longer be using Honor and Conquest to buy gear and instead after reaching max level, you’ll begin accruing Honor Points when playing in Battlegrounds and Arenas. These increase your Honor Level (the max being 50) which nets you gold and Honor Talents along with artifact powers. These talents can only be used in PvP and can be used together with your normal skills during competitive play.

It should also be noted that gear stats will no longer be taken into account for PvP and each player will receive a set of stats based on their specialization. Bonuses from sets, enchants and Legendary items will be disabled. You’ll still receive some modifier to your stats based on your gear’s item level but this puts players on pretty much the same level during PvP.

What are your thoughts on these changes? Let us know in the comments and make sure to check out the other planned features for PvP in the above post.

Guild Wars 2 will see its first major expansion in Heart of Thorns which will bring a host of new quests and features along with a new PvP mode called Stronghold. If you’re curious as to what Stronghold will be like, then you’re in luck – ArenaNet has announced a public beta for the mode to be conducted on April 14th.

The public beta will last for 24 hours and is open to all players in North America and Europe. It will be the only mode available in the Unranked Arena. Ranked Arena players will still have Conquest PvP to look forward to. There will also be a Twitch stream of the open beta, the schedule of which you can check here. To further sweeten the deal for Heart of Thorns, Guild Wars 2 will be 75 percent off tomorrow till April 14th.

Heart of Thorns still lacks a release date so stay tuned for further details in the coming weeks on the same.

Creative director Yousof Mapara talks about the advantages and disadvantages of both platforms.

It’s often been stated that developing for the PlayStation 4 is easy. It’s also been stated that porting PC code to the PlayStation 4 is easier than, say, porting the same to the PlayStation 3. The PS4 has the benefit of more powerful hardware compared to its predecessor but when you look at PvP titles like Secret Ponchos, isn’t it really the PC with the advantage?

GamingBolt spoke to creative director on Secret Ponchos Yousuf Mapara about the same and asked how developing for the PC compares to PS4 development, especially given the audience available for PvP games on PC.

“I would not say one is better than the other. Each development platforms has advantages. It’s definitely nice how on PS4 we are dealing with a common set of hardware for all customers. We can optimize the game to have a very exact line between performance and quality. With PC that line is in a different place for every machine, so the approach is different. You let the customer pick what they want and give them the settings to do that.

“PS4 development is pretty cool for devs because of things like the Share feature…It’s great when you have a bug and you press a button and it captures the footage, although it’s a feature for players, we use it a lot as a dev tool. I like being able to run the game on my dev kit and have my computer I’m animating on running at full speed.

“Some stuff is really cool on the PC though too. You can take your Laptop to the coffee shop, and not worry about your dev kits! Both have trade-offs.”

What are your thoughts on the same? Let us know in the comments.

You won't need to unlock PvP individually for characters.

If you’re interested in the player vs. player aspect in Bungie’s Destiny – as well as you should be, since this is the team that practically built Halo multiplayer – then you’ll have to play the game to unlock it. However, once you unlock it for a single character, it will be available for all others afterwards. This is according to Bungie’s Tyson Green when speaking to Eurogamer.

“We found early on that people here in the studio, when they jumped on the game – these were people who were already really familiar with the game mechanics – they would roll a new character, play through the first mission then go right into PvP, and they would just get really beaten up by the other players because they didn’t have a super ability yet and they’d only got an auto rifle from the first mission.

“And they said, ‘this is really awful, this is a terrible experience!’ And we said, ‘you’re right, we have to make sure that doesn’t really happen.’

“So when your first character unlocks PvP, you’re a little bit further into the game. You’ve probably done one or two of the campaign missions, probably unlocked a special weapon and your super ability. And then once that’s happened we unlock it for all the characters on your account. Once you know how the game works, if you want to take a Hunter into PvP at level three, yeah, we’re okay with that. You know what the game is at that point, so that’s your decision to make.”

Destiny is scheduled to release on September 9th for Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360 and PS3. PvP footage of the game is slated to be showcased at E3.

Square Enix finally unveils its multiplayer experience based on Legacy of Kain.

Square-Enix has finally revealed the Legacy of Kain based free to play PVP game Nosgoth, which will be heading to PC. Check out the announcement trailer above.

Developed by Psyonix for release on PC via Steam, Nosgoth will see humans taking on vampires with the former using special equipment and hunting tools while the latter relies on close combat and supernatural powers. Gameplay will be from a third person perspective.

In a statement on the official blog, the developer has stated that, “At Psyonix, we’re passionate about team-based multiplayer games. When Square Enix approached us to help create Nosgoth, we were excited to use our experience working on titles like Bulletstorm, Gears of War, Mass Effect 3, and Unreal Tournament 2004 to deliver something unique in the multiplayer genre.

“We made the decision to go to free-to-play to break down barriers and let as many players into the game as possible. One of the key goals has been to create a fair experience that doesn’t penalise players who don’t spend money in the game, as such Nosgoth doesn’t include items, weapons or abilities that are inherently better (aka supremacy goods).”

Those interested can sign up for the closed beta here.

How the game handles player vs. player combat will differentiate it from other online titles.

With all the open world, online games coming out in the next generation, Massive Entertainment game director Ryan Bernard talked to OXM UK about how player vs. player combat in Tom Clancy’s The Division will serve as its main “differentiator”. “The players want big, open worlds, they want online. You know, everyone’s like, hitting these buttons with the different games that are coming out now – I’m sure you’re talking to those guys as well. And so, you’ve got to have a hook for your game, and how we’re handling PvP is ours.”

One of those ways is by making the fear of losing one’s gear in combat very real. “We want player versus player to be meaningful. And the way player versus player gets meaningful is you need to have something to lose – it’s not just a scorecard in a multiplayer map.” Bernard also mentioned the oodles of gear, weapons and skills you’ll be able to obtain, craft and exchange.

“This is a world that’s coming apart so even though you’re a member of the Division, it’s a scary place. I think another part of doing PvP well is not knowing where the threat is coming from, not knowing who is the threat necessarily. We really want to play with that, to enhance the experience.”

Of course, there will be ways to preserve one’s gear after dying, which Massive will reveal later. For now, The Division is slated to release for PS4 and Xbox One in late 2014.
