QuakeCon 2012 boasts North America’s largest bring-your-own-computer (BYOC) LAN party, a keynote by John Carmack, panels of industry icons and over $150,000 in cash prizes.

This years QuakeCon kicked off with a welcome address from Todd Hollenshead of id Software and Pete Hines of Bethesda, which led into John Carmack’s keynote address. QuakeCon 2012 also features a host of panels, such as: The Game of Making Games, Designing Multiplayer Games That Last, GTTV’s Bonus Round,’ and Idle Thumbs Podcast Live: Arena.

QuakeCon panelists include Chet Faliszek and Tom Leonard of Valve, Geoff Keighley of GTTV, G4TV’s X-Play presenter Blair Herter and Ted Price, President of Insomniac Games.

“QuakeCon is the culmination of a dedicated group of gamers, ranging from casual to hardcore, who make the trip each year to visit with friends and connect with peers on the largest LAN party in North America.,” said Todd Hollenshead.

Speculations start with Doom 4, which has been in development for a while now and seen no real news in the past few years. But for what it’s worth, it’d be great to see id Software come completely out of left-field and announce the revival of Commander Keen.

QuakeCon 2012 kicks off on August 2nd and concludes midnight on August 5th. The convention will see the likes of Arkane Studios’ Dishonored and id’s Doom 3 BFG Edition playable to attendees.

QuakeCon 2012 kicks off on August 2nd and continues till midnight August 5th.

The tournament brings together some of the the greatest players in the world to participate in highly-competitive tournaments, and is free and open to the public. Matches will also be broadcast live big screens, featuring  commentary from this year’s ‘shoutcasters’.

Players will compete in the Quale Live Duel Invitational Masters Championship as well as the Intel-sponsored Quake Live Capture the Flag Open, Quake Like Amateur Duel and Quake Live Random Draw Free For All tournaments.

The Quake Live Duel Invitational Masters will 32 of the world’s best Quake Live players in an exclusive tournament, hand selected by tournament staff from the open online registration. These players will face-off 1 vs.1 for $20,000 in a single elimination bracket, with each match decided in a best-of-three.  When two competitors remain, thousands will gather to watch as the finalists go head-to-head in a single elimination, best-of-five throw-down with $9,000 to the victor.

The Intel Quake Live Open Capture the Flag will feature 4 vs. 4 competitions for up to 8 teams, fighting in a double elimination bracket via best-of-three, concluding in a best-of-five grand final. Players who come out on top will share prizes of $7,000, including $4,000 for the team of champions.

Available for up to 64 amateur players, the Intel Quake Live Duel Open will offer up-and-coming competitors a taste of professional gaming. With a share of $2,000 at stake, including $1,000 for the champion, players will compete in a single elimination bracket, with each match played in a best-of-three-games format.

Over the course of three days, the Quake Live Free Play booth will be home to the Intel Quake Live Random Draw Free For All, where attendees can battle for a share of $1,000. Eight participants will be drawn at random from the crowd to compete in 5 minute FFA Challenges, with the victor of each challenge winning a cool $100.

QuakeCon 2012 is being held August 2-5 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas. Admission is free.
