Following the live event’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bethesda Softworks confirmed that QuakeCon 2020 would be a digital-only event. A schedule for the same has since been released with the event running from August 7th to 9th. It will air live on Twitch.

The schedule includes titles like Fallout 76, DOOM Eternal, Prey (2017), The Elder Scrolls Online, Dishonored and The Evil Within 2. Oddly enough, there’s nothing on Bethesda’s upcoming releases like Deathloop and GhostWire: Tokyo. The latter isn’t that surprising since it doesn’t have a release date but that still doesn’t explain the former’s absence. Maybe at the next State of Play for PS5, rumored to be happening next week?

Of course, the other elephant in the room is the complete lack of any “reveal” or update on The Elder Scrolls 6 or Starfield. There might be some new details during the “Welcome to QuakeCon at Home with Pete Hines” segment. But don’t count on any gameplay, much less a release date.

Like so many things, the gaming industry was hit hard by COVID-19. From delayed games, huge unemployment, to the cancellation of major events. Once industry-anchoring shows like E3, Gamescom and TGS have either been canceled or refitted into digital events. One such show was the annual QuakeCon, which was canceled earlier in the year. Thankfully, for fans, it will get a digital counterpart in Quakecon at Home.

As announced via the official website, this year’s QuakeCon will be the first that comes directly to your home. The event will be a 3 day streaming event, and will include eSport Tournaments, charity streams and for the first time ever the ability to pre-order your own QuakeCon swag from your home, with some items proceeds going toward charity.

QuakeCon at Home 2020 will begin on August 7th and run until the 9th. For full details and links to the store to purchase swag, follow the link through here.

QuakeCon 2020 is the latest in a line of popular gaming events that’s been cancelled due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Bethesda and id Software shared the news on Twitter, noting how discussion had been going on for the past few weeks. This particular year was special since it marked the 25th anniversary of the event.

“However, with all the logistical challenges and uncertainties we currently face due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made the difficult to cancel this year’s QuakeCon. The health and safety of our employees, volunteers, vendors, sponsors, and players will always be our top priority, and in these times it felt wrong to be talking about a gathering when a gathering is the last thing any of us should be doing right now.”

Though QuakeCon 2020 was set to take place in August, both companies said, “We don’t know what the state of the pandemic will be this August. We do know it won’t be possible to complete the work and planning with partners, vendors, volunteers, and others that is required to make QuakeCon a success.”

Such a cancellation at this stage isn’t surprising. E3 2020 was slated to take place in June but was cancelled earlier this month with a digital experience likely planned. GDC 2020 was pushed forward to August while Gamescom 2020 will assess the situation by mid-May before determining whether the on-site event needs to be cancelled. On the bright side, there will still be some kind of digital format for this year’s Gamescom.

Of course, there will likely be some online reveals for whatever was planned at QuakeCon 2020. The cancellation of any planned tournaments will likely be a heavy blow for competitors though. Stay tuned for more details and updates on Bethesda’s plans in the coming months.
