Not all open-world games are full of busy work and filler tasks. Some will challenge you in various, brutal ways for fun.

Open-world games are often known for their enormous land masses and checklists of stuff to do. However, many of them also pose challenges that will test the limits of one’s capabilities. It could be that increased damage is taken, enemies have more health or wholesale changes are made to the world’s rules at a higher difficulty. Let’s take a look at ten such open-world titles here.

Subnautica: Below Zero (Hardcore Mode)

Like the first game, Subnautica: Below Zero has three game modes. Survival is your usual playthrough where health, food, oxygen, and water must be managed. Items are dropped on death, and given the various monstrosities in 4546B, you will die quite a bit. However, you can respawn and usually get them back.

Hardcore Mode is Survival but with only one life – when you’re dead, that’s it. To add more spice, if your Oxygen levels are low, the PDA doesn’t give a warning, so it’s easy to drown. Jumping in and trying to figure everything out is tough enough, but Hardcore will test your limits and patience.

Chill out in some picturesque locations, industrialize on an alien planet, or encounter Lovecraftian horrors in these open-world games.

When we think of open-world games, the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Grand Theft Auto, Minecraft and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild come to mind. As one of the more popular genres, open-world games offer unprecedented exploration with worlds teeming with secrets and stories. However, along with some of the bigger names, there are plenty of other lesser-played open-world titles that are worth diving into. Let’s take a look at 10 of them here.

Satisfactory

“First-person Factorio” isn’t the worst way to define Satisfactory but Coffee Stain Studios’ factory sandbox has plenty of distinctions. Set on an alien planet must be colonized, the world is hand-crafted and not procedurally generated. You can choose a starting location, like the Grasslands or Rocky Desert, thus influencing starting resources and your approach to building.

Combat is present but not a major focus – it’s all about creating a self-sustained factory spanning the surface, and delivering them to the Space Elevator. While still in early access and needing plenty of polish, the feeling of expanding, optimizing your factory and gazing out upon the sprawling industrial complex in first-person is great.

Developer Redbeet Entertainment recently shared more information regarding their open-world survival game Raft, including the upcoming content which will be added with chapter 3 once it releases.

Developer Redbeet Entertainment, who is currently developing the early-access co-op survival crafting game Raft, shared more information in regards to the much-awaited chapter 3 for the game.

The update comes via a dev blog on the Steam page of the game, sharing information regarding what Raft chapter 3 will add in, among various other details. The devs started off the update by confirming that chapter 3 is not yet ready to be released, as most of the development time went into the renovation update for the game last year, and said that the chapter 3 update is pretty big in terms of content, which is why it is taking a while to complete.

However, the developers did share a few tidbits of information that show what is coming along with the upcoming chapter 3 update for Raft. For starters, two new destinations are being added to the game, and one of them is going to be a snowy region. Given the setting of the game, there is a high chance of both the locations being separate islands.

New characters are also being added to the game for players to discover and unlock. The characters will be playable and will have a connection to the place where they are discovered. Apart from that, the story is being overhauled, where almost every note in the game is being re-written, and the devs are ensuring that there is a more consistent and engaging story for players to enjoy.

To decrease unnecessary clutter of items in the inventory, the game is also introducing trading outposts, where players can trade in scrap cubes. Scrap cubes can be created by processing items found in the world, and trading outposts will provide unique items.

The developers wrapped up the dev blog by saying that they will share more information in the near future this year. No time frame or release date for chapter 3 was mentioned in the dev blog. Regardless, it seems like the upcoming update will surely give players more things to do to keep themselves occupied.
