In an interview, Michel Ansel spoke fondly about the original platformer, noting that it still holds up quite well even today.

While Ubisoft has been quiet about the Rayman franchise, rumors have been circulating of the company looking to bring the mascot platformer back to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Adding further credence to this, series creator Michel Ancel has spoken about a remake of the original Rayman being in the works. Speaking to Retro Gamer magazine, Ancel spoke fondly about the first game and how it still holds up quite well in the modern gaming landscape.

“I think Rayman is still a fun game, and there’s a lot of content,” said Ancel, as caught by social media account Rayman Merchandise. “The pacing is a bit slow because you have a big character on the screen. It also has pixel-precise gameplay, so it’s not always easy, but it’s interesting that the constraints of yesterday make it still feel original today.”

He went on to discuss the remake, and how Ubisoft will help modernize it by giving it HD visuals, as well as quality-of-life features like more frequent mid-level checkpoints to help make some of the more challenging parts less frustrating.

“Even though it’s complex, I think there’s a kind of remake planned. I don’t remember when specifically, but it will be in HD, and I think Ubisoft is adding a few more checkpoints and things like that just to make it a bit less frustrating. I think that’s a nice move, because that’s the only point that could be a problem for non-skilled players. But yeah, I think it’s still a very nice game,” he said.

Rumors of Rayman returning could be seen as recently as just last month, with a listing for Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition being spotted on the website for the Australian Classification Board. The title was seemingly registered on January 22, and has a rating of “G” thanks to its mild violence, being “suitable for everyone”. At the time of publishing, however, the rating has since been removed.

The report also indicated that there are two Rayman projects in the works at Ubisoft, codenamed Iceman and Steambot. Iceman is expected to be the Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition, while Steambot is reportedly a remake of 2013’s Rayman Legends.

Earlier rumors have revolved around Ubisoft working on a brand new numbered entry in the Rayman franchise since 2003’s Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc. However, development on the title is expected to start in earnest after the company gauges the success of the Rayman Legends remake.

Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition is expected to be remastered, if not outright remade versions of the original Rayman trilogy: Rayman, Rayman 2: The Great Escape, and the aforementioned Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc. The first title was originally released in 1995 on PC, Atari Jaguar and PlayStation. Rayman 2: The Great Escape would come out in 1999 and would see a wider release across Nintendo 64, PlayStation, PS2, Dreamcast and PC. Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc was the follow-up, coming out in 2003 on PC, PS2, Xbox and GameCube.

For its part, Ubisoft has noted that it is actively working on the “future of Rayman“. However, producer Loic Gounon also said that fans of the franchise shouldn’t expect news “too soon”.

Rayman could be making a comeback sooner than expected with the 30th Anniversary Edition reportedly launching "very, very soon."

While the future is looking dire for anyone who’s a fan of IPs like Splinter Cell, it seems Ubisoft hasn’t given up on Rayman after its big shuffle. A listing for Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition has recently emerged courtesy of the Australian Classification Board (thanks, Gematsu), registered on January 22nd and rated “G” for very mild violence. It’s developed and published by Atari.

According to Insider-Gaming’s Tom Henderson, Ubisoft is reportedly working on two Rayman titles. The first is codenamed “Iceman” and meant to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary. It’s allegedly out “very, very soon,” and considering the naming, that describes the recently rated title to a tee. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen such a release – see Beyond Good and Evil – 20th Anniversary Edition.

The second project, “Steambot,” is arguably more intriguing since it’s allegedly a remake of Rayman Legends. Eagle-eyed fans will likely recall the reports that emerged in September 2025 about the project, which is reportedly scheduled for release in late 2026. Development is allegedly going quite well, and depending on its performance, Ubisoft could greenlight Rayman 4, a new mainline entry.

As for the 30th Anniversary Edition, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a re-release of the limbless wonder’s original trilogy – Rayman, Rayman 2: The Great Escape, and Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc. Stay tuned for any further updates in the meantime.

Producer Loic Gounon says a "very talented team at Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan" are collaborating on the platformer's future.

Rayman is making a comeback, according to a new video message from brand producer Loic Gounon. Ubisoft Montpellier and Milan are “working together” on the future of the IP, and though you shouldn’t “expect news from us too soon,” Gounon said that Rayman is “in good hands.” Check out the video below.

Rumors of a new Rayman title began last year in October and gained further momentum when Ubisoft confirmed it had started an “exploration phase” for the brand. Subsequent job listings also indicated that a new triple-A title in the franchise was in development, but its progress is currently unknown.

Rayman Legends is the last major Rayman-focused title, released in August 2013 to extensive acclaim. The platforming icon would also receive a dedicated story DLC in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, even though the turn-based tactical strategy title failed to really meet the publisher’s expectations.

In the meantime, to celebrate Rayman’s 30th anniversary, Ubisoft will release concept art, interviews with the development teams and behind-the-scenes details. Stay tuned for more updates.

According to a report, the team behind the Mario + Rabbids games has been disbanded, with some moving on to form new studios.

Ubisoft Milan – the studio behind tactical RPGs Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope – had apparently pitched a third game in the Mario + Rabbids series. However, this pitch was ultimately turned down by Ubisoft. The Game Business co-founder Christopher Dring has noted that the development team behind the tactical RPG series has been mostly disbanded.

“It’s worth noting that the Mario + Rabbids team have largely disbanded,” said Dring. “Although Ubisoft Milan still exists, the people behind that game have gone and formed a new studio. I know they had pitched another title that didn’t get approved. I don’t know why, but it just never happened, which was again, I think, tied to Nintendo.”

The third game’s pitch being turned down and the team largely being disbanded might have led Ubisoft Milan to start working on a new Rayman game. Job listings were spotted back in May with Ubisoft Milan looking for a 3D gameplay animator and a senior game designer, indicating that the studio might be working on a new 3D title that would fall under the “Rayman brand”. While the listings have been taken down quickly by Ubisoft, they can be viewed on the Internet Archive.

“Ubisoft Milan is looking for a Senior Game Designer who will work on the Rayman brand,” said one of the listings. “The ideal candidate has a proven and solid experience as Game Designer in the videogame industry with an in-depth understanding of how to define, prototype and implement game systems within the scope of the project and following the Game direction, making sure to capture the gameplay feel, while still being fun and accessible.”

Outside of the Mario + Rabbids series, the Rayman brand has largely been dormant at Ubisoft. The Rabbids themselves were spun off from older Rayman titles where the characters first made their debut. However, a report from back in October indicates that Ubisoft might be looking at the Rayman series back in the form of a remake.

According to the report, a remake of one of the older Rayman titles is seemingly at work, involving developers that have worked on side-scrolling metroidvania title Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, alongside developers at Ubisoft Milan. Rumours also indicate that Rayman creator Michel Ancel is serving as a consultant on the project. However, there have been no details revealed yet about which Rayman game will be the subject of the remake.

Ubisoft confirmed that a new Rayman game might potentially be in the works through a statement shortly after the report came out. In its statement, Ubisoft said that its Montpellier and Milan studios have started “an exploration phase” on the Rayman brand. The company noted that the project was still in early development.

The last mainline games in the Rayman franchise were side-scrolling titles Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. Both titles were praised at the time for their art direction and gameplay. For more details, check out our reviews of Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends.

Following recent reports that a Rayman remake is in the works, Ubisoft has stated that it has started exploring a revival of the franchise, with a new project "in its early stages."

After over a decade of dormancy, the Rayman franchise seems to be showing signs of life again. After starring in an expansion for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope last year, it seems Ubisoft’s platforming mascon is also getting his own game.

A recent leak claimed that a Rayman remake was in development at Ubisoft Milan, and that series creator Michel Ancel was serving as a consultant on the project, with his involvement raising concerns for some in the development team due to past reports alleging toxic leadership issues.

Now, Ubisoft seems to have confirmed the same in a statement. In a statement to journalist Stephen Totilo (which he shared on Twitter), a Ubisoft representative has stated that the company’s Milan and Montpellier studios has “recently started an exploration phase on the Rayman brand”, and that the project in question (whatever it is) is “still in the early stages”.

The representative also confirmed that Ancel is indeed consulting on the project in order to “ensure consistency within the universe”.

Of course, this isn’t an explicit confirmation that a new Rayman game (or a remake, as the leak alleges) is coming, but it is very strong indication of the same, at the very least.

Some of Prince of Persia: The Lost crown's recently disbanded dev team has moved to the project, which is in the works at Ubisoft Milan, it's claimed. Series creator Michel Ancel is allegedly serving as a consultant on the project.

Following recent reports that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown’s development team was disbanded by Ubisoft after the title failed to sell to the company’s internal expectations, more information has seemingly emerged on that front.

As per Insider Gaming, a Rayman remake is currently in development at Ubisoft’s Milan studio, and a portion of The Lost Crown’s development team has been reassigned to the project. Which Rayman game specifically is being remade isn’t mentioned, though it is claimed that series creator Michel Ancel is serving as a consultant on the project. That, however, has allegedly raised some concerns with members of the team, due to past allegations and reports regarding Ancel’s toxic leadership.

Interestingly enough, the Rayman title is one of three projects that The Lost Crown’s development team has been moved to, as per a separate report by Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, with the other two projects being Project Ovr (which is the next mainline Ghost Recon game) and Beyond Good and Evil 2. Allegedly, most of the team has moved to the latter, with Ghost Recon and Rayman pulling about a dozen members each.

It’s also reported that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has only managed to sell about a million units since its launch in January. Read more on that through here.

“If your curiosity is piqued, don’t worry about it and just give it a try...”

FromSoftware and Sony Interactive Entertainment’s next partnership takes a step away from the Soulsborne titles that they pioneered with Demon’s Souls and then Bloodborne, and instead tackles something new entirely—a new adventure game coming exclusively to Sony’s PlayStation VR hardware, named Déraciné.

Déraciné, out tomorrow, was overseen by none other than Hidetaka Miyazaki, the mastermind behind Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls 3–so it’s pretty different from the kinds of games that players have come to know him for. Nonetheless, it seems to be a game that he is very personally attached to.

Speaking in an interview posted on the PlayStation Blog, Miyazaki said that it is his hope that players who engage with this game find it, and its characters and worlds, to linger on in their memories.

“I would like to start off by saying this game is unlike any I have made before in a myriad of ways,” he said. “The gameplay, the approach to game design and even the volume of the title are dramatically different. It is also quite strange, and probably difficult to understand. All that being said, if your curiosity is piqued, don’t worry about it and just give it a try…

“There is a kind of emotion I’d like players to take away from this title, connected to the theme I mentioned earlier. It would be difficult to explain without giving away spoilers. I guess the one thing I can say is that I hope this little title, and the characters that live inside it, will linger on in the memories of those who play through it.”

Déraciné will be launching tomorrow, November 6, exclusively on the PlayStation VR. At that point, it will be clear whether the pioneer of the Soulsborne genre has also managed to make a similarly indelible mark on VR gaming. If you want an early look at whether or not the game has managed to achieve that, make sure to check out our review for it.

These old-school classics were fun but rarely pulled any punches when it came to difficulty.

Looking back on the PlayStation One era doesn’t just fill our hearts with joy at the memories of Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid and PaRappa the Rapper. It also reminds us of some of the most difficult titles in gaming, games that strained our patience and sense of enjoyment for years. Let’s go through 15 of these titles here, shall we?

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee

Abe’s Oddysee is darkly imaginative but also fiercely tough. Not only can Abe be gunned down quickly (which guards are more than happy to do) but there’s no small amount of traps, obstacles, and disasters waiting to happen. Furthermore, Abe has to go out of his way to save his fellow Mudokons…that is, unless a good ending isn’t a priority for the player.

Follow up to Rayman: Jungle Run hitting smartphone platforms early next month.

Rayman Fiesta Run, the smartphone optimized Rayman experience that follows last year’s Rayman: Jungle Run, will be available on iOS and Android via the Apple App Store, Google Play, and Amazon Appstore on November 7, for just £1.99.

Rayman Fiesta Run is greatly expanded from Jungle Run, featuring a much more agile and equipped protagonist, as Rayman can now swim, shrink, and access a full range of power ups as he takes on over 75 new levels.

The new game has, as the name suggests, a fiesta theme: it is set amongst maracas, hot pepper disco balls and a festive fiesta backdrop, and it will see Rayman lunging for cocktail umbrellas, leaping on limes, punching piñatas and facing new epic bosses. There will also be Invasion levels, raising the level of challenge in the game.

The game uses the same UbiART Framework engine that powered last year’s breakthrough hit Rayman Origins, and this year’s lauded follow up, Rayman Legends, along with the upcoming, breathtaking, Child of Light. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage.
