Take a look at 25 of the greatest remakes ever made, each one reviving a classic while modernizing its gameplay for a new era.

Video games face a huge problem of preservation, as products of this medium are quite prone to being dated on account of rapid changes in technology and shifting trends. As such, remakes have been quite prominent as of late, which try to transform classic experiences in a way that’s palatable to modern audiences. With this feature, we will be taking a look at 25 of the best remakes of all time that are absolutely worth your time.

Resident Evil (2002)

The original Resident Evil was a groundbreaking title, mixing together survival and horror in a way that was never seen before. The PlayStation version was a product of its time, and the developer remastered it for the GameCube generation with a significant overhaul to its visuals and several quality-of-life changes. The fixed camera angles meant better pre-baked reflections and textures, making the visuals a step above what was possible with a free camera.

Once you start these games, you won't want to stop playing them.

First impressions are absolutely vital for the success of a game and the first hours are typically the last items to get polished in the dev process for good reason. Many players decide if they’ll continue within the first chapter of a game’s narrative, but the first 30 minutes is especially crucial. Most of our favorite openers don’t waste time with bloated exposition, thrusting right into an intriguing hook. Some of our favorites opt to take a more minimalist approach, letting the player soak in the setting’s atmosphere and worldbuilding first. Here are 15 games that will hook you right in the first 30 minutes.

Mass Effect 2

The opening of Mass Effect 2 is as climactic as most other games’ endings. This sequel begins with the player controlling a limping Commander Shepard crawling through the carnage and destruction of an all-too familiar locale from the first game; the Normandy ship. What follows is a complete breakdown of everything we built up in the first game. What’s more, Shepard has to work with a mysterious group, Cerberus, to get back what was lost and fight the Reaper threat. Mass Effect 2 feels like The Empire Strikes Back of video games with how high the stakes have been raised and how dire things have gotten.

Take a look back at the big moments that have defined Capcom's horror series.

The first Resident Evil debuted on the PS One in 1996, kick-starting an entirely new genre of horror and action. Throughout its many sequels, prequels and spin-offs, not to mention remakes and ports, Resident Evil had its share of middling failures and overwhelming successes. However, the sheer number of awesome moments it’s provided have been worth the chaotic journey. Let’s take a look at 25 of the best moments from the entire franchise though be warned that spoilers abound for pretty much every game.

The First Zombie – Resident Evil (1998)

For many fans, it all started here. Even with its hilariously bad voice-acting and cheesy characters, the encounter with the very first zombie was perfect. Jill/Chris enters and sees a perp hunched over a corpse as chewing sounds can be heard. As it notices their presence, a decapitated, half-chewed head falls to the ground and it slowly turns around. It may not be the sharpest cutscene by today’s standards but the look in its eyes would herald the horror to come for decades.
