While rumors of Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica circulate, Capcom's other remakes continue selling well years later.

Capcom’s remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3 continue to bring in numbers for the company. The former has sold a whopping 15 million copies, up by 500,000 since its last milestone, while the latter is at 9.6 million sales, up by 400,000.

Both sales figures are noteworthy due to the relative age of the titles. Resident Evil 2 remake arrived in January 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, eventually coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. It received overwhelming acclaim from critics and fans, becoming the standard-bearer for remakes.

Resident Evil 3 remake followed in April 2020 and to say it didn’t quite receive as much acclaim would be an understatement. This is due to its comparatively shorter length, story changes and cut content (including Mercenaries). The bundled Resident Evil: Resistance, a horrendous asymmetrical multiplayer component, also didn’t help.

Capcom’s latest remake is for Resident Evil 4, which reached 9.2 million units sold. As for the future, Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil – Code: Veronica are rumored to receive remakes.

With this feature, we will be looking at games that start off great in the first few hours but end up halting down to a crawl as you move towards the end.

Pacing is easily one of the most vital aspects of a video game, and nailing it can be a dreadful task for a developer. It’s a medium that requires balancing elements of narrative and gameplay mechanics for the entirety of the experience, and when that is not done right – things can quickly start to fall off track. Of course, that doesn’t mean that games that exhibit such tendencies turn out to be objectively bad but having pacing issues does leave a sour taste in the mouth. With this feature, we will be taking a look at 10 such games that do start out strong, but tend to get a lot less interesting as you inch towards the end credits.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Kojima Productions delivered one of the best stealth experiences of recent memory with Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. The game meshes together a great story filled with underlying themes along with an open world that’s quite literally a playground of possibilities. It’s one of the best games that use the concept of systemic world design to the fullest extent, and it’s really fun to bend these systems to your will and come up with interesting solutions to a variety of problems.

The game starts out really strong, and Kojima ensures gradual progression as new tools start to open up and missions get more complex with new enemy types and labyrinthian designs – forcing you to use everything in your arsenal to get through it all. But once you get past Mission 31, you notice that the “new missions” are actually just rehashed older missions with new mission clear constraints tacked on top for good measure. It’s still fun to clear out these missions, but stripping away the freedom to cause chaos can also turn some people off – and that coupled with the fact that it’s all essentially rehashed content built to pad out the game can tamper with the enjoyment.

Lifetime sales for the series hit 150 million, significantly over the 146 million sales reported in the previous quarter.

Resident Evil 4 Remake and Street Fighter 6 were the highlights among the new releases in Capcom’s second quarter and first half of fiscal year 2023 financial results. However, older Resident Evil titles like Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake continue to perform exceptionally well.

The former sold 1.18 million copies this fiscal year, with lifetime sales at a whopping 13.13 million (up from the 12.6 million reported earlier this year). Meanwhile, Resident Evil 3 Remake sold 970,000 units in the same period, sending its lifetime sales to 8.04 million (up from 7.6 million). Lifetime sales for the series are currently at 150 million, up from the 146 million reported as of June 30th 2023.

Resident Evil 4 Remake recently saw the release of Separate Ways, a separate route for Ada available as paid DLC. Sales figures for this weren’t provided, but the DLC has received critical acclaim. Check out our review for more details and stay tuned for more updates.

These games might not be of the highest quality, but they certainly deserve a second chance should you happen to get them at a bargain.

Gaming can be an expensive hobby, more so with the recent hike in the price of AAA releases and the rising prices of related console hardware. As such, gamers would rather spend their hard-earned money on nothing but the best of what the medium has to offer – which can be unfortunate for games that don’t hit that level of quality. We’re talking about games that are considered average or less than average by critical standards, and we’ve found that many of these titles have something to adore that makes them worth checking out. You wouldn’t be picking up these games at launch, but experiencing them becomes a much easier pill to swallow when you can get them at a fraction of the retail price.

To that end, we run down 10 not-so-great games that deserve a second chance should you happen to come across them during a sale.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was arguably one of the most highly anticipated games of the last decade, but all that anticipation and excitement didn’t amount to much when the game finally launched in 2020 after a ton of delays and pushbacks. Cyberpunk 2077 was rife with game-breaking bugs and glitches, and the performance on eighth-generation consoles was absolutely horrendous – making it all an unplayable mess. Many of the previously promised features like a live service multiplayer component, wall running, vehicle customization, and more were also absent from the final release. But underneath that thick veneer of technical inefficiencies and broken promises, there lies a great depiction of a dystopian future complete with a complex net of gameplay mechanics that’s definitely worth more than a look. And now that post-launch updates have cleared out these rough edges, Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely worth checking out.

Meanwhile, Resident Evil 7 stands at 12 million units sold, while 2020's Resident Evil 3 remake stands at 7 million units.

Capcom has updated its list of platinum sellers, providing fresh sales figures for all of its titles that have sold over a million units to date, and unsurprisingly, the Resident Evil franchise has continued to exhibit a strong tail with sales across a number of its recent instalments.

Resident Evil 7 has hit a major milestone, standing at 12 million units sold as of March 31, having sold an additional 300,000 units during Q1 of this year. However, the gap between it and 2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake has narrowed massively. It has now sold 11.9 million units to date, up 700,000 units from its previously-confirmed sales figures.

Meanwhile, Resident Evil Village now stands at 7.9 million units sold, up half a million from the end of last year, while Resident Evil 3’s 2020 remake has now sold 7 million units, which is up 600,000.

Resident Evil 4 Remake’s sales are listed as 3.7 million units as of March 31, though in April, Capcom announced that its sales had exceeded 4 million units.

Updated sales figures have also been provided for the Monster Hunter franchise- read more on that through here.

These games use the best of atmosphere, writing, and direction to give players the scariest spooks in their starting minutes.

Horror games are dime a dozen, but few have openings that really unease the player from the outset. To that end, here are 15 of the best games that have scary openings.

The Evil Within 2

The Evil Within 2 is easily the best horror game that the studio has put out to date, and it features one of the scariest openings that’s sure to remain etched into your memory long after the credits roll. You start out in front of a flaming house, and upon entering you hear the screams of your beloved daughter. As you make your way through the rubble, you encounter Lily – who is enveloped in flames. She comes close and chokes you to death, wakes Sebastian up from this horrible nightmare, and kickstarts the narrative.

There's "defeating bosses" and there's "going out in a blaze of glory." Check out 10 bosses that go down in the most epic ways possible.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about video games through the decades, it’s that all of them are eventually beaten. It may take some time but ultimately, the player is supposed to win (most of the time, at least). While some bosses lay down and die, others go out in a blaze of glory. Then there are others that fall in violently epic ways because a simple death is too good for them. Let’s take a look at 10 of the most epic video game boss deaths in history.

Metal Gear RAY – Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Armstrong’s death is constantly brought up as one of the more epic boss deaths in video games. Don’t get us wrong – it’s a great choice – but there’s also the massacre of Metal Gear RAY at the start of the game. Essentially, Raiden goes one-on-one against it, systematically taking it apart. As the music builds and he dodges lasers and gunfire.

He then proceeds to toss it into the sky before dicing it apart and splitting it right down the centre before it explodes all around him. If any sequence could leave such a huge first impression, it’s this one.

Capcom recently revealed its fiscal year report for the quarter ending December 31st 2020, noting that net sales were up 22.6 percent year-on-year. Operating profit is up by 32.2 percent year-on-year, resulting in the highest profit quarter in the company’s history. As noted by Daniel “ZhugeEX” Ahmad on Twitter, sales for Resident Evil 3’s remake are at 3.6 million sell-in.

Which sounds good but Resident Evil 2 Remake hit 4.7 million in the same timeframe. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne continues to perform well, selling 7.2 million units thus far. Total sales for the base game and expansion have also crossed 24 million. Monster Hunter Rise, which is out this March for Switch, is currently seeing high demand.

There’s also Street Fighter: Duel, a JRPG-style mobile title that hit iOS devices in China last November. Published by Tencent, its initial performance has been good. Capcom has a lot more to look forward to in the coming months especially with Resident Evil Village launching in May. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

No matter how many times they fell, these bosses kept coming back stronger.

No matter how many times a particular boss is beaten, they just can’t take a hint. Maybe they’ll pop up in the sequel as the true mastermind behind the scenes. Or perhaps they didn’t really die in the previous battle and are now back for more. Only one thing is guaranteed and that’s how they’ll never truly be defeated. Let’s take a look at such bosses that fit into that category. Spoilers abound so beware.

Guardian Ape – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Immortality in Sekiro is a curse, something you learn firsthand when dealing with the Guardian Ape. It’s torturous enough with its grabs, slams and dung and you’d think things would end upon severing its head. However, the Guardian Ape resurrects and utilizes the sword embedded in its neck along with Terror to make the fight even more annoying. Stabbing its centipede ends the fight but won’t permanently kill the ape. Instead, when traveling to the Ashina Depths, you fight the Headless Ape again, only this time it receives some backup from its mate. Defeating it will result in the centipede taking a rest…until you come back with the Mortal Blade and kill it for good.
