Leaker Aesthetic Gamer is "95 percent positive" of a reveal at the June 6th showcase, alleging "a lot of buzz in the grapevine."

Following his last rumor about a Resident Evil 9 reveal “100 percent” happening this year, leaker Aesthetic Gamer, aka Dusk Golem, believes that it could appear at Summer Game Fest. The showcase is set for June 6th, 2 PM PDT and features over 60 partners, including Capcom.

In a series of tweets, the leaker says they can’t provide “100% confirmation, no one’s directly told me or the like.” However, they’re “like 95% positive we’re on the verge of Resident Evil 9 being revealed at Summer Game Fest. This is the first time behind the scenes there’s a lot of buzz in the grapevine, lots of rumblings & the sorta activity behind the scenes that usually are signs we’re about to get a Resident Evil game announced.

“Add to that Capcom’s Resident Evil social media accounts seem to be getting more active suddenly, Andi from Screenfire Germany’s claim (I put stake in his word here), and I’d say if you’re tuning into Summer Game Fest on June 6th hoping that Resident Evil 9 will show up, there’s an incredibly high chance you won’t be disappointed. I’m getting into hype mode for it myself.”

There’s also the supposed tease that Capcom inserted in a celebratory video for Resident Evil 4 remake selling over ten million units. The studio has otherwise been silent since announcing the sequel’s development in July 2024. Koshi Nakanashi of Resident Evil 7: biohazard and Revelations fame is at the helm.

Of course, there have been numerous rumors, the latest claiming it would be an open-world title with multiplayer before a reboot in 2021 (with a new Resident Evil: Revelations also allegedly cancelled). Resident Evil 4 protagonist Leon S. Kennedy is still the lead, though. Stay tuned for more details and updates as Summer Game Fest draws near, and check out the hype trailer in the meantime.

According to these rumours, Capcom is expected to finally unveil Resident Evil 9 to the world during the upcoming Summer Game Fest.

Notable leaker AestheticGamer, aka Dusk Golem, has provided some context on the rumours surrounding Resident Evil 9. While there have been some details floating around about what Capcom’s follow-up to Resident Evil Village would be about, according to the leaker, a lot of the details that aren’t just false, largely come from an older, now-scrapped version of Resident Evil 9 that was in development.

In a series of posts on social media platform X, AestheticGamer wrote about the older version of Resident Evil 9, development on which had apparently started all the way back in 2017, right after the release of Resident Evil 7. The game was seemingly being designed to be the complete opposite of what we got in RE7, with an open world and some multiplayer components, as a response by Capcom to RE7 missing sales expectations around its launch.

However, it is worth noting that Resident Evil 7 went on to become quite successful for Capcom, with many fans also pointing to its release as one of the big turning points for the company in terms of the quality of its games rising. The original version of Resident Evil 9 apparently revolved around Leon and Jill being stuck on a fictional island off the coast of Singapore.

While this version of the game has been scrapped, with development on Resident Evil 9 getting a “pretty heavy reboot” in 2021, the current version of the horror game will reportedly still feature Leon Kennedy as its protagonist. AestheticGamer has also posted that a sequel to the Resident Evil: Revelations series that would revolve around Rebecca has been scrapped as well as of 2022.

According to AestheticGamer, ScreenFire Germany host Andi is likely correct about Capcom getting ready to officially unveil Resident Evil 9 during the upcoming Sumer Games Fest, with a Q1 2026 release window. Other interesting details include remakes for Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Resident Evil 0 being worked on are also being corroborated by AestheticGamer.

Earlier this month, the leaker also said that Capcom is “100%” going reveal Resident Evil 9 some time later this year. However, they weren’t quite sure about whether this reveal would happen sooner in the year – Summer Games Fest – or at events later on, such as The Game Awards in December.

For its part, Capcom has been quiet about the future of the Resident Evil franchise after having last released the remake for Resident Evil 4. Celebrating that title, however, the company released a video that might just be hinting towards a mainline sequel. In the video, fans of the franchise noticed a wooden post with signs thanking players. The post also happens to be in a shape that, when turned counter-clockwise, is the Roman numeral for the number 9.

Earlier rumours have indicated that Capcom is planning to go big with Resident Evil 9. According to these rumours, the title will be a reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise, with comparisons to Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7 being brought up.

However, it's unknown whether the sequel will be revealed at Summer Game Fest in June or in December at The Game Awards.

Capcom seemingly teased the next Resident Evil in a celebration video for Resident Evil 4 remake but has yet to confirm a reveal date or launch. According to known leaker AestheticGamer, aka Dusk Golem, on Twitter, the survival horror title is still set to be revealed this year.

They doubt it will be delayed further, but it’s unknown if it will be unveiled at the upcoming Summer Game Fest showcase in June or The Game Awards in December. It’s still allegedly launching next year, though once again, whether within the current fiscal year ending March 31st, 2026, or in late 2026 is unknown.

Time will tell, so stay tuned for updates. Aside from Resident Evil 7: biohazard director Kosha Nakanishi leading the sequel, very little is officially known about it. AestheticGamer previously reported that it would try new things and “100 percent” star Leon S. Kennedy as the protagonist. Jill Valentine was allegedly slated to have a “prominent role,” but plans seemingly changed.

It's almost 100% for sure being revealed this year and releasing next year.
The Roman numeral for "9" is distinctly seen, perhaps hinting at a potential upcoming announcement for the next mainline title.

Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake recently hit a new milestone, selling over ten million copies. To celebrate, the development team shared a funny little video on Twitter where the villagers in the climactic opening don party hats to celebrate.

Doctor Salvador is busy shredding his chainsaw like an electric guitar while Leon raises his fist in respect. However, some users noticed that the sign near the tail-end looked a little odd. It features various lines of thanks, but perhaps most notable is the shape. Flip it 90 degrees to the left, and there’s a distinct resemblance to the Roman numeral for “9.”

This has been taken as a tease for the next Resident Evil, the ninth mainline title after Resident Evil Village, though in what capacity remains to be seen. Aside from Onimusha: Way of the Sword in 2026, Capcom’s release catalogue looks a little dry. An announcement for Resident Evil 9, followed by a launch late this year or next year (if you believe the rumors), could help.

As always, stay tuned for updates. Resident Evil 4 remake is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC.
Capcom is apparently taking its time with Resident Evil 9 since it will be a change on the same tier as what Resident Evil 4 was.

Resident Evil leaker Aesthetic Gamer (Dusk Golem) has taken to social media platform X to reveal that a new game in the franchise will likely be unveiled some time this year. In his post, Golem also wrote about why it was taking Capcom to unveil a new Resident Evil title, especially in the wake of the success of its own Resident Evil 4 remake, as well as Konami’s horror game Silent Hill 2 remake.

“I’ll be tweeting a lot more about Silent Hill as I love the series & super excited for f, but I know a lot of people are also antsy at the lack of Resident Evil news for a year & a half now,” he posted.

Aesthetic Gamer also stated that the next mainline entry in the Resident Evil franchise will be a complete reinvention of the series. He compares the level of changes to be on the same tier as what we saw back in the early 2000s between Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and Resident Evil 4, and even the more recent reinvention we saw from Resident Evil 6 to Resident Evil 7.

“The thing I think people will realize when RE9 is revealed is the reason this game is taking so long is because it’s going to be a big reinvention of the series, to the same level as RE4 & RE7. It’s not going to play just like RE7/RE8 or the Remakes, it’s trying new things & very ambitious. It will almost definitely be revealed this year, so hold tight.”

It is worth noting that, as is the case with all leaks and rumours, it would be best to take these with a pinch of salt. However, a reinvention of the franchise would make some sense for Capcom, especially since Resident Evil 8 Village managed to bring a conclusive end to the story started back in 2017’s Resident Evil 7 revolving around Ethan Winters and his family.

In a post from back in January, Aesthetic Gamer also wrote about Resident Evil 9 featuring Leon Kennedy as its primary protagonist. He wrote about how he was 100 percent sure that Leon will be taking on the role of main character of the game. This comment was made to counter rumours circulating of the new game featuring Jill Valentine as the protagonist.

Rumours surrounding Valentine as the protagonist of Resident Evil 9, as well as the game featuring an abandoned hospital as its main setting were called false by Aesthetic Gamer back in January.

Since the release of Resident Evil 4 remake back in 2023, Capcom has been quiet about the future of the franchise. The release of Resident Evil 7 brought about something of a renaissance for the series, with just about every game released since then getting quite a bit of critical acclaim and seeing commercial success.

Resident Evil 4‘s remake was incredibly successful for Capcom, selling more than 9 million copies as of December 2024. In the meantime, Capcom has also released Monster Hunter Wilds on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Check out our review for more details.

Jill Valentine having a "prominent role" was reportedly true in 2001, but plans have since changed, per leaker Aesthetic Gamer.

Resident Evil leaker Aesthetic Gamer (also known as Dusk Golem) recently clarified that rumors of Jill Valentine playing a major role in Resident Evil 9 were false. These same rumors claimed the sequel was set in a hospital and featured a new Goatman enemy.

However, a screenshot from Discord has emerged where they’ve stated that Leon S. Kennedy is “100 percent” the main character. The latter’s previous canon appearance was in Resident Evil 6, but he starred in the recent Resident Evil 4 remake (which has sold over nine million copies).

As for another Discord image from 2001, which saw the leaker claim Jill would have a “prominent role,” Aesthetic Gamer replied, “It was true then. It isn’t now. Really not any more complicated. I wouldn’t be surprised in the future when Resident Evil 9 comes out, and they show concept art that they might show early drafts of the game had Jill.”

Resident Evil 9 doesn’t have a release date, though Capcom has confirmed its development. It’s helmed by Koshi Nakanishi, Resident Evil 7: biohazard’s director, who said it feels “substantial.” Though allegedly out later this year, it could also launch in 2026.

Meanwhile, remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil – Code: Veronica are also reportedly coming. The former is allegedly developed by K2 and M-Two (who worked on Resident Evil 3 remake), while the latter is handled by Capcom Dev 1 (Resident Evil 2 and 4 remakes). Stay tuned for more details and updates in the coming months.

An industry insider claims that all the rumours we've seen about Resident Evil 9 so far are false, and that Capcom will announce the game after Summer.

While the future of the Resident Evil franchise is still shrouded in mystery, rumours have begun popping up for what Capcom might be planning for the next entry in the series, which is speculated to be Resident Evil 9.

According to the latest set of rumours, courtesy of industry insider AestheticGamer, Resident Evil 9 will not feature Jill Valentine in a major role. AestheticGamer also refers to rumours about a hospital setting as false. He goes on to state that just about every rumour about Resident Evil 9 that might be floating around is wrong, and that Capcom is likely going to officially announce the game after Summer 2025.

“Wait for actual RE9 news, nearly every RE9 rumor that’s been floated around has been bullshit,” posted AestheticGamer. “What’s not bullshit is Silent Hill f did get rated in Korea today, and that’s exciting.”

Rumours from back in November indicated that Resident Evil 9 would feature dual protagonists in Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine. For context, Leon joined the cast of primary protagonists in the series back in Resident Evil 2, and Jill has been in the franchise as a playable character since the very first Resident Evil.

According to rumours from November, Leon in Resident Evil 9 is expected to look similar to how he did in 2012 animated movie Resident Evil: Damnation. Jill, on the other hand, will have her appearance based on 2023 movie Resident Evil: Dead Island.

The game is rumoured to be set between the events of Resident Evil Village and its Shadows of Rose DLC, and will continue the storyline revolving around the Megamycete that was first kicked off in Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. The leak also indicated that players would be able to freely explore an island, complete with various spooky structures like a hospital, and an abandoned factory.

While Capcom itself has been quiet about the next Resident Evil game, the company revealed back in July 2024 that Resident Evil 9 would be helmed by the director behind Resident Evil 7 – Koshi Nakanishi. Rumours have indicated that the title has been in development since 2018, and that it will be making use of Capcom’s in-house RE Engine, which we’ve seen power a host of games, including Monster Hunter Rise, Street Fighter 6, and Dragon’s Dogma 2. The engine has also powered a few Resident Evil games, including a remake of 2, 7, Village, a remake of 3, and most recently, a remake of 4.

The next major title from Capcom that will use the same engine is going to be Monster Hunter Wilds, which is slated for release on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 28. If the rumours of a more open-world approach in Resident Evil 9 are true, Monster Hunter Wilds will likely serve as a way to test the engine’s capabilities in this regard.

In the mean time, players can still enjoy the most recent release in the Resident Evil franchise: Resident Evil 4. The game was released back in 2023, and saw widespread acclaim both critically and commercially. For more details, check out our review of Resident Evil 4. And in the mean time, here are 10 of the biggest rumours about Resident Evil 9.

What should we expect from the next few years of Resident Evil?

We’re in a second golden age of Resident Evil now, with Capcom’s survival horror franchise having delivered a string of all-time classics ever since RE7 turned its fortunes around in 2017. Whether its remakes or new mainline entries, pretty much everything Resident Evil does these days turns to gold, so it’s only natural that there’s always plenty of excitement and curiosity surrounding what the future holds for the series.

Of course, that’s something that we currently don’t have a ton of concrete details on. We can obviously take for granted the fact that Capcom has multiple Resident Evil games in the works and lined up for release over the coming years- that much would be obvious even in the absence of any communication whatsoever from the company itself. But the exact nature of those plans is something that we don’t yet know much about. As ever though, we do have leaks and rumours to fall back on.

Interestingly enough, leaks have also claimed that, yes, Capcom does indeed have multiple RE titles in the works simultaneously. More specifically, prominent insider and leaker Dusk Golem (aka AestheticGamer) claimed earlier in the year that as many as five Resident Evil titles are in the works– and if the leaker’s claims are anything to go by, we know what at least three of those games will be.

Unsurprisingly, one is Resident Evil 9, or whatever Capcom ends up calling the series’ next mainline numbered entry, i.e. the follow-up to Resident Evil Village. The game is allegedly going to leverage the RE Engine’s new open world tech (which it now boasts courtesy of Dragon’s Dogma 2), which likely means it’ll be a wider and more expansive experience than its predecessors, while it also allegedly has the largest ever development budget and longest ever development cycle for a Resident Evil game to date. Another source, Residence of Evil, has claimed that fan favourite series mainstays in Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine will return to share the spotlight as the protagonists, though Dusk Golem has refuted those claims- which means we’re going to have to wait for official word from Capcom for more clarity on what to expect.

When that official word will arrive is anyone’s guess. Very rarely does Capcom take off years with Resident Evil. With the exception of 2018 and 2024, it has released either a new Resident Evil game or new DLC for a previously released one every single year over the last few years, and under ordinary circumstances, that would mean RE9 would be more or less a lock for 2025. However, with Monster Hunter Wilds being Capcom’s big flagship release for the early months of next year, that would mean Resident Evil 9 would likely be releasing in the later months. The last several entries in the series have come out in the first half of their respective years, and though that doesn’t mean that RE9 can’t buck that trend, it does make it seem a little unlikelier. Even so, at the latest, we’d expect the game to release by the first few months of 2026, which means the wait for more information won’t be an interminable one, at the very least.

Beyond that, to no one’s surprise, it’s claimed that multiple Resident Evil remakes are also in the works. The series has been on a stellar run with its remakes, having enjoyed widespread critical and commercial acclaim across the board, which meant new remakes were pretty much a guarantee. What might take some by surprise, however, is the projects that Capcom has allegedly chosen to remake. Most would have figured that Resident Evil 5 would be the next natural choice, while many even wondered if the original Resident Evil could be in line for a second remake, this time bringing the classic into the modern era with an RE Engine third-person reimagination.

However, based on what Dusk Golem claimed earlier in the year, neither of those two are being remade– yet, at the very least. Instead, Capcom is allegedly developing remakes of Resident Evil: Code – Veronica and Resident Evil Zero. The former is something that many fans have been begging for for a while now, and though the latter is considered one of the franchise’s black sheep, it’s a game that many feel could benefit massively from a facelift and a reimagining. The prospect of remakes of the two titles is certainly an exciting one, then, especially because of how unexpected it is.

Interestingly, it’s claimed that the Zero remake isn’t actually being handled by Capcom internally, with external teams K2 and M-Two supposedly leading the charge for the project, with Capcom overseeing. For those unfamiliar, those were the teams that handled the Resident Evil 3 remake, a game that has a decidedly spottier reputation that virtually every other modern Resident Evil title, which means there will likely be some who will be skeptical about what that means for the Zero remake. Given the fact that Code – Veronica is the unquestionably bigger and more significant title, however, it makes sense that Zero has been handed to an external team while Capcom itself takes care of more pressing projects. Besides, Resident Evil 3 is, at the very least, a fun, well-made game, even with its flaws, so hopefully, Zero will at least be on that same level, if not better.

Beyond that, what the other two Resident Evil games are besides the three we’ve touched on is a mystery. It’s possible that early work has already started on the next mainline Resident Evil entry after RE9- after all, RE9 itself has allegedly been in development since 2018, three years before even Village had come out, so it wouldn’t be inconceivable for Capcom to be adopting a similar approach for what comes next. That is all guesswork at best, however. Sure, RE9, Code – Veronica, and Zero are also all unconfirmed and unverified rumours, which is only a little worse than guesswork- but in the absence of official information, it is better than guesswork.

What’s exciting about Resident Evil right now is that it seems like Capcom has a vast treasure trove of past material and new ideas to dive into for future instalments. Where new entries are concerned, given the series’ vast web of narrative threads, characters, settings, and flavours, it feels like there’s so much a new Resident Evil could do, while in the remake department, Capcom clearly won’t be running out of games to remake and improve anytime soon. That RE5 remake is an inevitability, even if it’s not being made right now, and we’d bet that another RE1 remake will eventually happen as well. Can we maybe also expect a Resident Evil 6 remake down the line? That remains to be seen, but the fact that it’s a possibility, and the fact that even a game as disastrous as RE6 would make for an exciting remake in this age of Resident Evil, tells you all you need to know about the excellent shape the beloved horror franchise currently finds itself in.

These potential details on the next Resident Evil are worth paying attention to.

The Resident Evil franchise has been on a roll ever since it turned its fortunes around with Resident Evil 7 in 2017, having delivered a string of stellar, all-time classic survival horror titles in the years since then. But with Resident Evil Village now well over three years old, fans are growing increasingly antsy about the series’ next mainline numbered entry, and when Capcom will choose to announce it. The only thing that we officially know about Resident Evil 9 so far is that it’s being helmed by Koshi Nakanishi, who last directed Resident Evil 7, and with Monster Hunter Wilds clearly being Capcom’s big focal point in 2025, it’s looking unlikely that an official announcement and accompanying details for the next instalment in its beloved horror franchise will arrive in the immediate future.

As ever, though, there’s no shortage of unofficial information out there. Over the last several months and years, leaks and rumours from a variety of sources have claimed different things about Resident Evil 9, and here, we’re going to take a look at a few that have caught our eye. Remember, however, that these are all unconfirmed and unverified details, which means there’s no guarantees that they’re going to be accurate. We certainly hope some in particular do, however, because they make some intriguing promises- starting with our first pick…

STARS LEON AND JILL

Not counting any remakes, it’s been a while since we last got a mainline Resident Evil game starring Leon, whose last chronological appearance was Resident Evil 6, and even longer since we last saw Jill Valentine, who last appeared in Resident Evil 5- though her last playable appearance in a mainline entry was Resident Evil 3: Nemesis all the way back in 1999 (or 2012 spinoff Revelations). According to a recent leak by YouTube channel Residence of Evil, however, both characters are set to return as the primary protagonists of Resident Evil 9. The game is allegedly set four years after Resident Evil Village’s main story, which means it’s several years before its epilogue. Additionally, interestingly enough, as per this leak, Leon and Jill won’t be the only returning familiar characters.

CHRIS AND BARRY RETURN

Chris Redfield is and always has been a Resident Evil mainstay (you’d have to go all the way back to 2005’s Resident Evil 4 for the last numbered instalment that didn’t feature him in any capacity), and as per Residence of Evil’s leak, though he won’t be the protagonist in Resident Evil 9, he will play a role in the story. He will also be joined by fan-favourite character Barry Burton (whom we haven’t seen since Revelations 2), with both characters allegedly set to play a support role. Supposedly, Barry and Chris will be supporting Leon and Jill during their missions via radio calls.

EVELINE AND THE MEGAMYCETE

Eveline and the Mold have formed the backbone of the Resident Evil 7 and Village story arc, and supposedly, RE9 is set to be the conclusion to that story. As per the leak, the game’s story involves the shadowy organization that originally created Eveline now mass producing her clones. To make matters worse, they’re supposedly doing it by using the Megamycete, provided to them by Resident Evil Village big bad Miranda. That can only mean trouble.

ANTAGONIST

Resident Evil fans are no strangers to locking horns with evil corporations and enigmatic organizations, and as we’ve touched on, Resident Evil 9 is supposedly going to make that part of its central conflict once more. Who is the central antagonist going to be, however? Supposedly, it’s going to be a man named Mr. Simon, who is in charge of the mass production of bioweapons for the company on the island. This is a franchise that has traditionally boasted strong villains, though its track record in that department has been a bit spottier ever since the death of Albert Wesker all those years ago, so it should be interesting to see how this Mr. Simon fellow pans out- assuming, of course, that this leak proves accurate.

STALKER ENEMIES

From Mr. X and Nemesis to good old Jack Baker, Resident Evil games have delivered some of the best and most terrifying stalker enemies the survival horror genre has ever seen, and as per Residence of Evil’s leak, RE9 will follow suit. Supposedly, both Leon and Jill will have unique stalker foes pursuing them throughout the game. The leak is light on details in this area, but claims the enemy pursuing Jill will be called the Goat-Man- which is a descriptive name, if nothing else.

MAIN ENEMY TYPES

Another interesting claim the leak makes is that zombies – or foes similar enough to zombies – will return as the main enemy type in Resident Evil 9. The island’s residents will supposedly be infected with the Megamycete, which will turn them into ravenous zombie-like creatures, with behaviours ranging from praying to the moon to ravenously running after prey, on top of being able to use different weapons. If this turns out to be accurate, we’re probably going to be looking at something taking cues from Resident Evil 4’s Gonado once again.

SETTING

Sticking with the leak we’ve been discussing thus far, it also claims that Leon and Jill’s mission will see them heading to an island to investigate the aforementioned company and its activities, though they, too, will be infected, and will have to deal with hallucinations of Eveline throughout the game. No, it won’t be the first time Resident Evil will be doing an island setting, but it does sound like it’s going to be a fairly diverse one. Speaking of which…

LOCATIONS

As per the Residence of Evil leak, Resident Evil 9’s island setting will feature a number of different locations. It claims that playtests over the past year have seen Jill exploring an abandoned forest and Leon making his way through a forest, while other locations on the island supposedly include residents’ houses (including several abandoned ones), caves, labs, a temple, and an abandoned factory. What does that say about the game’s size? Well…

OPEN WORLD ELEMENTS

Many Resident Evil faithful will argue that the series should never go open world, and it’s easy to see the merits of those arguments- RE9, however, is supposedly going to feature at least some open world elements. Earlier in 2024, prominent Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem claimed that Resident Evil 9 will make use of open world tech that Capcom built into the RE Engine for Dragon’s Dogma 2. Does that mean the game will be open world? It doesn’t sound like it. It does, however, sound like it might be a larger and more expansive experience than its predecessors.

LONGEST RE DEV CYCLE TO DATE

No game – certainly no AAA game – is cheap or easy to make, and sure enough, it goes without saying that Capcom tends to leave no stone unturned with the development of its Resident Evil titles. With RE9, however, it is supposedly going the extra mile, as per the aforementioned Dusk Golem. At different occasions over the last couple of years, the leaker has claimed that Resident Evil 9 has the largest ever development budget for an RE game to date, and by the time it releases, will also have had the longest ever dev cycle for the franchise, having supposedly started back in 2018.
