From May 20 onwards, the only way to play the first two games in Insomniac's classic shooter series will be with actual discs and a PS3.

In an upcoming clean-up of its catalogue of old games available through PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium, Sony is also removing PS3 shooters Resistance: Fall of Man and its sequel, Resistance 2, from the service. Caught by PushSquare, this means that both of the Insomniac Games-developed titles will not be playable on the PS4 or PS5 from May 20 onwards.

This can be considered a bit of a gut punch to fans of the classic franchise since, without owning physical discs of the games and a PS3, there is no other way to play Resistance: Fall of Man or its sequel except for via PlayStation Plus Premium. Since PS3’s PlayStation Network servers went down long ago, there is also no way to get your hands on digital copies of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2.

While Sony purges games from the service every year, the company usually avoids removing first-party titles. Rather, the focus tends to be more on taking down some third-party titles, likely as licenses and agreements expire. Interestingly, Resistance 3 and Resistance Retribution will still be playable through PlayStation Plus Premium.

Neither Sony nor Insomniac have made any official statement about Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 being taken down from the subscription service. While it might raise hopes for some that there might be a remastered release planned for modern platforms, Sony hasn’t confirmed anything one way or another

Back in February, former Insomniac CEO Ted Price spoke about how the studio wanted to make a fourth mainline entry in the Resistance franchise, but the pitch was ultimately rejected. According to Price, Sony refused to greenlight the project.

“Resistance 4. We did pitch that one, and it was a wonderful concept,” said Price. “It’s just that in terms of timing and market opportunity, it didn’t work out. But it was the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being passionate about extending the story further.”

In the meantime, as it takes down more games from its PlayStation Plus service, Sony has also been increasing the price of the subscription in various regions. Australia, South Korea, and four countries part of the Southeast Asia region (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia) saw PlayStation Plus subscription prices go up across all tiers. This price hike followed a similar one announced for 15 Latin American countries.

“Like many businesses around the world, we continue to be impacted by global market conditions and will be adjusting our local prices for PlayStation Plus,” wrote the company on the PS Blog. “This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.”

Along with the costs of the subscription service going up, Sony has also announced that prices for the PS5 console itself will be going up in Europe, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Regions across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) might see console prices go up as well.

Sony has announced the lineup of games that are being added to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium’s catalog of titles, and there’s several major games that subscribers can look forward to.

With this feature, we talk about 15 games on the PS3 that should be remade for the PlayStation 5.

Despite the lack of first party exclusives this year, the PlayStation 5 has been absolutely killing it with its PS3 remakes such as the likes of Demon’s Souls and The Last of Us Part 1, but there are so many more games of that generation that deserve to get that treatment as well. With this feature, we take a look at 15 such games that need to be remade for the PS5. We have quite a bit to cover, so let’s dive right into it.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

After a strong start with the first game, Naughty Dog really came into its own element with the sequel. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves told an enthralling story punctuated with thrilling set pieces and memorable characters, and it’s a game that surprisingly holds up well to this date. A PlayStation 5 remake could take full advantage of current-gen horsepower and deliver stunning visuals and smoothed-out gameplay, making for an experience that would feel completely new and fresh.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Metal Gear Solid is making a comeback with an upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, but the entry that is in the most desperate need of a remake has to be Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. And that’s not just for introducing the game to a new audience, but also because Metal Gear Solid 4 is locked on the PS3 and there is no legitimate way for current-gen console owners to enjoy this classic. We are hoping that the next remake after Delta Snake Eater will be this one, so there’s no harm in keeping your fingers crossed as well.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Before Ninja Theory worked on Hellblade and eventually got acquired by Microsoft, it delivered an amazing action adventure in the form of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Released in 2010, Enslaved was a game that provided a fresh take on the classic novel Journey to the West. With its interesting gameplay ideas based on cooperation and fresh world design, Enslaved was a game that had plenty of merits to its name. Of course, it wasn’t a flawless experience by any means – which is why we need a remake for this classic. Ninja Theory could use its current-gen technology and learnings from subsequent projects to create a game that’s bigger and better than the original in every regard.

Red Dead Redemption

Rockstar Games delivered an amazing Wild West epic with Red Dead Redemption. John Marston’s tale of redemption is worth experiencing through to the end, but sadly it’s a game that’s locked on the PS3 and Xbox. While there is a remastered version available for current-gen consoles, it’s a barebones port that is in dire need of substantial improvement. As such, having a ground-up remake for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S would be really appreciated by both returning fans and those who played Red Dead Redemption 2.

Dead Space 2

EA Motive delivered an excellent reimagining of the first Dead Space with its recent remake, and we can’t help but ask for a similar remake of the second game as well. Fans of the franchise would agree that Dead Space 2 was the series at its absolute peak, and getting to experience all that through a new lens is something that has us salivating at the very thought of it all. Given the success of the first remake, it’s obviously possible that something like this might happen in the near future – so keep your fingers crossed.

Fallout 3

Set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic US, Fallout 3 takes players on an unforgettable journey filled with tons of meaningful quests and characters that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Despite those merits, it’s not easy to play Fallout 3 for players accustomed to modern gaming conveniences – which is why we so desperately need a remake of this classic. With no new single-player Fallout game in sight, we could do with a reimagining of Fallout 3 for the time being.

Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs might feel like a cheap GTA clone at first glance, but the moment you look past that initial veneer – you will find a surprisingly fun open world with a complex web of different mechanics that come together to create something special. It’s well and truly a game of its time, and it deserves to be re-introduced to a brand new audience with a fresh coat of paint. It’s a difficult task considering that the original developer United Front Games closed its doors in 2012, but there’s no harm in having some hopes. Right?

Resistance: Fall of Man

Insomniac Games’ Resistance series was Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s Gears of War, and the similarities ranging from a post-apocalyptic backdrop to the opposing alien forces are readily apparent. But despite those similarities, Resistance: Fall of Man is a solid first-person shooter with plenty of spectacle and set pieces which makes it such a great game to remake at a time when PlayStation is known for its cinematic blockbuster experiences. Apart from that, Sony has a very evident lack of first-person shooters in its roster of exclusive IPs, so bringing Resistance back would also help diversify its portfolio.

Vanquish

PlatinumGames is known for its slick action and spectacle like seen in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Vanquish is a game that’s emblematic of those very strengths. This third-person action game features a rather unique gameplay loop that makes cover-based shooting an extremely fun activity through the use of power slides and slow motion, and it’s a game that has surprisingly stood the test of time. That being said, not many people actually tried Vanquish back in the day – and a full-fledged remake with modern graphics and smoother animations would be right up the alley of many gamers.

Dark Souls 1

FromSoftware perfected what they started with Demon’s Souls with 2011’s Dark Souls, and it instantly became a game for the history books. Thanks to a meticulously crafted world with distinct levels and memorable boss fights, Dark Souls was able to win the hearts of thousands upon thousands of fans. But it would be wrong to say that Dark Souls doesn’t have its fair share of problems, both stemming from the technology at the time and also a few quirks related to its design. But with a full-fledged remake, FromSoftware can take its learnings and create a game that’s better than before.

inFamous 1

Sucker Punch Productions of Ghost of Tsushima fame made its reputation as one of Sony’s top talents through the inFamous series, which provided a thrill ride through an open-world filled with interesting missions and side activities alongside a morality system that significantly changes your playstyles and skill trees. The first game has arguably aged the worst, which is why it would require a full-fledged remake for the PS5.

Motorstorm

Motorstorm was a rather unique offroad racing experience where players get to choose from different vehicle types to win the race. It combines high-octane racing with destruction mechanics to make for an experience that’s unlike anything, and it retains that status even after all these years. Between this and the fact that not a lot of players actually picked it up back in the day, Motorstorm is the perfect candidate for a full-fledged remake that could introduce this experience to a brand-new audience.

L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire is undoubtedly one of the most creative games in Rockstar’s wide array of open-world offerings, and a lot of that falls down on the impressive detective work that players get to do in the myriad of cases available to solve across its vast space. The developer used cutting-edge facial modeling to make conversations with subjects more meaningful, but many of those ideas were obviously limited by the technology of the time. But now that we have modern engines like Unreal Engine 5 with features like MetaHuman toolkits, a remake of LA Noire could finally fulfill its complete creative vision in earnest.

The Elder Scrolls: IV Oblivion

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is an expansive RPG with a complex web of systems and dozens of quests for players to complete. It’s safe to say that it was also ahead of its time in so many ways, which is why it is the perfect fit for a full-fledged remake for current-generation systems. Getting to explore the mystical beauty of its world in high definition will be a dream come true for fans of the genre, and while the chances of it all happening anytime soon are pretty slim – we can at least hope.

Batman Arkham Asylum

Rocksteady’s debut Batman Arkham game might just be its most focused game in the series. Each room in the asylum is meticulously designed, and the interconnected nature of the levels combined with memorable boss fights really makes it feel like a living, breathing place. But it’s also true that the game hasn’t aged all that well after so many years and subsequent entries in the series, so a remake that brings the features and mechanics from modern games would result in an instant hit.

A challenging game and missions are one thing but iffy checkpoint and save systems can make them downright frustrating to complete.

There are a lot of features we take for granted in games like auto-saves and checkpoints. Suffered a terrible death? Chances are you would respawn not too far away and continue onwards. Some games rely on save point placement for their difficulty, like in the Souls series. But some games have terrible save and checkpoint systems that test your patience. Let’s take a look at 12 of them here.

Ori and the Blind Forest

Moon Studios’ acclaimed game had its share of aggravating platforming, accentuated by its checkpoint system. While you had normal save spots, energy could be spent on creating checkpoints anywhere. During difficult sections, you may forget to make a checkpoint or not have enough energy to create one. Thankfully, the sequel forgoes this for a more traditional auto-save and checkpoint system.

After an amazing trilogy, where is the next big game in the Resistance franchise?

Sony’s exclusive line-up hasn’t always looked the way it does now. Now, if you look at what PlayStation 4’s exclusives generally tend to be, you see a lot of graphically ultra-realistic third person action/adventure games, which are all amazing in their own ways, but it wasn’t too long ago where the PlayStation exclusive line-up looked very different. The PlayStation 3 was littered with a very diverse array of exclusive games by the end of its life.

Adventure games, platformers, experimental games, and even several first person shooters like Killzone and Resistance really found their footing on the Playstation 3. The latter ended up turning into a very well-received trilogy all on the PS3 with two hand-held spin-offs, one on the PSP and one on the Vita. The developer, Insomniac Games, who was very well known for their work on Ratchet and Clank series from the PS2 era was in full-swing as a developer churning out Ratchet games and Resistance games all throughout the PS3’s life, both carrying the common denominator of being extremely fun and featuring some of gaming’s most interesting and entertaining weapons.

Resistance to this day might be Insomniac’s most mature series though, with lots of darker themes and tones ringing throughout the main trilogy’s alternate history timeline, creating an interesting contrast with the studios’ other work. All three of the mainline Resistance games reviewed and sold quite well and cultivated a healthy online audience, especially with Resistance 2, so what happened? Why haven’t we seen any word of a fourth game in the series in so many years? What the hell happened to Resistance?

Resistance certainly started out with a bang! The first game featured many great weapons and an very interesting plot of Allied forces fighting against an insect-like extraterrestrial species, who would be called the Chimera, from taking over Europe in the 1950’s. The marketing was a snap as the skull of said Chimera was quickly turned into an unmistakable image synonymous with the series. The game-play featured a unique mix of traditional World War 2 styled weapons and alien tech that had more in common with guns that you would see in a Halo game than any other game based in the 1950’s, and this kept things infinitely interesting throughout the campaign.

Another excellent addition that Resistance had to offer was its massive multiplayer that could house up to 40 players at once, offering sheer chaos that few other shooters offered at the time. The online mode was supported well after launch with multiple map packs and other DLC content being rolled out for a long time after launch. These basic tenants continued into the second game that had a comparable story but an even better online mode that had one of the PS3’s best co-op experiences.

Most of the weapons from the first game’s multiplayer were back as well as a few additions and servers for this mode were active well into the current decade, and made it all the way to 2014 before they were shut down. Resistance 3 was perhaps the best game in the series with more focus on narrative and story and had what was easily the best campaign in the series. The multiplayer was a little more on the generic side this time around but still rounded out the game, and the series, quite nicely. So it’s no surprise that the Resistance series did quite well and, to this day, has a pretty dedicated fanbase.

Like I touched on before, Insomniac really lived up to their name by being straight up workaholics for the last 15 years. Countless quality games have been produced out of that studio and one can’t really blame them for wanting to move on from any given franchise. The first game was a launch window game for the PS3 and really sold quite well, so a sequel or even a trilogy weren’t too out of the ordinary for something that was successful, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the studio behind it is going to want to continue with it forever. We see this all the time with developers. Once three or four great games are out in a franchise, its only natural for the developers to want to stretch their legs creatively as Guerrilla Games did with Horizon Zero Dawn and Naughty Dog did with The Last of Us.

Insomniac Games’ CEO Ted Price did tell GamesRadar in an interview a few years back “We decided to bring Resistance to a conclusion when we looked ahead and realized that Resistance 4, while possible and something we seriously considered, wasn’t going to be the right game for us at that time.” Which does make sense as Resistance 3 was certainly the pinnacle to what the first two games were ultimately getting at thematically and stylistically. Insomniac’s success as a studio was probably what happened to Resistance. The team has been working on excellent projects like Sunset Overdrive, a Ratchet and Clank reboot, and now what appears to be their best work with Marvel’s Spider-man. With a team this busy expanding their reach, it makes sense that they wouldn’t want to go backwards.

Will the series carry on without Insomniac though? I think it’s entirely possible. With fans of the previous games still not even close to giving up hope for a new one, and still expressing interest on a regular basis, and Sony already showing that they’re willing to move on without the original team at the helm with the Playstation Vita’s Burning Skies, I think its safe to say that the series will make a return one day.

So, the question really is when it will make its return? Perhaps Insomniac isn’t out of the picture though. While they are currently busy wrapping up Spider-man now, Resistance 4 could very well be on the agenda for their next project. But like all matters of this sort, only time will tell.

Could a remaster happen on the PS4?

One of the most overlooked and underrated members of Sony’s first party lineup for PlayStation is the Resistance series, and it makes sense as to why- not only did the series really not hit its stride until Resistance 3, which was incidentally the conclusion of the franchise.

But it also has had a number of highly mediocre entries (Resistance 2, Resistance Burning Skies), was subpar compared to Insomniac’s other efforts such as the famed Ratchet and Clank or Spyro series, and always felt out of place, considering Sony already had a major shooter franchise it was billing as PlayStation’s flagship with Killzone.

That said, it had its fans, and those fans will undoubtedly be delighted to know that Sony has just filed a brand new trademark for Resistance in Europe. It’s a standard trademark, and it says nothing new- and before you get your hopes up too high, it’s probably just been filed to further extend and protect the original trademark on the series. The likelihood that this suggests is not of a brand new Resistance game in development (3 bombed, and Burning Skies poisoned the well), but rather, the possibility of a remaster/repackaging of the PS3 games, probably for the PS4.

Which would still be fine as long as more players get to play the great Resistance 3.

It’s amazing that we’ve come so far in the span of just seven years. In November 2006, the PlayStation 3 launched and was widely hailed as the most powerful machine at the time. The PlayStation 4 repeated this trend, despite there being far more naysayers now than seven years ago. But what’s most interesting isn’t the difference in technology – it’s in the launch titles.

The PlayStation 3 had Insomniac’s Resistance: Fall of Man while the PlayStation 4 has Guerrilla Games’ Killzone: Shadow Fall. Coincidence that both consoles launch with shooters? Regardless, it’s interesting to compare the detail in the textures, effects, draw distance and even the resolution of both games.

Remember the days when Resistance had a couple of enemy soldiers in screen? That was of course eclipsed by Resistance 2’s hulking behemoths, and with Killzone: Shadow Fall’s ability to have 24 enemy AIs on screen at once without a dip in frame-rate, it’s just plain fascinating to consider how far we’ve come.

Killzone: Shadow Fall releases on November 15th in North America and November 29th in Europe.
