From protagonist James Sunderland and Maria to the Bobblehead Nurses and Pyramid Head, it’s all here. Even iconic scenes like James looking at himself in the mirror at the start and gazing upon the infamous TV have been retained. Will it be enough to elevate the film beyond the original, especially with Christophe Gans returning to direct? Time will tell.

Return to Silent Hill arrives on January 23rd, 2026, in the United States. On the video game front, Screen Burn’s Silent Hill: Townfall is allegedly out in March 2026, though an official announcement is still pending. Konami is also teaming with Bloober Team once more for a remake of Silent Hill 1, which also lacks a release date.

The movie was originally announced all the way back in 2022. Gans, returning to direct after having also directed the first Silent Hill movie back in 2006, spoke about wanting to return to one of the best stories in the franchise, since the upcoming film is based on the story of Silent Hill 2.

“This return is my return to a world, a universe that I touched upon in 2006, 15 years ago,” said Gans when the movie was first announced. “The film was a great success and we decided to go back to the best of these stories.”

While details about how faithfully Return to Silent Hill will adapt the story of Silent Hill 2 are currently unknown, Gans has previously spoken about the plot revolving around a young man who has “known a great love” finding himself back in the eponymous town. Much like the game it is adapting, the protagonist of the movie will also be named James.

For context, Silent Hill 2’s story revolves around James Sunderland getting a letter from his dead wife, begging to meet him at their “special place” in the resort town of Silent Hill. Interestingly enough, the plot of Silent Hill 2 is largely divorced from the storyline of the franchise, which has usually featured cults trying to bring back their dead gods through the use of human sacrifice.

Return to Silent Hill will be the third movie in the franchise, following Silent Hill (2006), and Silent Hill: Revelation (2012). In the meantime, check out our review of Bloober Team’s remake of Silent Hill 2, which came out on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S just last year.

Return to Silent Hill will, in some way, adapt the main plot of Silent Hill 2, which has become one of the most critically-acclaimed and beloved horror games ever made. The movie will revolve around a young guy coming back to Silent Hill where, as Gans puts it, “he has known a great love.”

Knowing the franchise, things will undoubtedly turn out horribly for the young guy.

According to Gans, where the first Silent Hill movie was more about exploring a world that is seemingly trapped in mist, the second movie will rather focus on looking at the strange world that was created in Silent Hill 2.

Currently no release date for Return to Silent Hill has been announced so far, and it is still set to be in its pre-production phase, with primary photography yet to happen. The trailer also shows off frames from the upcoming movie’s storyboard, as well as concept art.
