The sequel to Myst is getting a remake built from the ground-up for modern platforms. Said platforms and a release window weren't announced.

Riven, the sequel to the adventure game classic Myst is getting a remake courtesy of Cyan (of Obduction fame). Though platforms and a release window weren’t confirmed, it did receive a brief announcement trailer, sparse as it is with information. Check it out below.

The developer also posted an FAQ, confirming it is a ground-up modern remake of the classic adventure title. It won’t be point-and-click, with players able to fully traverse the 3D environments. Other navigation methods will be announced at “a later date.”

Also, if you own the original Riven, you will not receive a free copy of the remake. “This new Riven is not an update or upgrade. It is a modern from-the-ground-up remake that has required (and will continue to require) a substantial investment of resources.” Further details weren’t provided, but the remake is seemingly a ways off from release.

First released in 1997 for PC and PlayStation One, Riven received significant acclaim due to its aesthetic and puzzles. It was the best-selling game of its launch year, and sold 4.5 million copies by 2001. Stay tuned for more details on the remake in the coming months.

These old-school classics were fun but rarely pulled any punches when it came to difficulty.

Looking back on the PlayStation One era doesn’t just fill our hearts with joy at the memories of Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid and PaRappa the Rapper. It also reminds us of some of the most difficult titles in gaming, games that strained our patience and sense of enjoyment for years. Let’s go through 15 of these titles here, shall we?

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee

Abe’s Oddysee is darkly imaginative but also fiercely tough. Not only can Abe be gunned down quickly (which guards are more than happy to do) but there’s no small amount of traps, obstacles, and disasters waiting to happen. Furthermore, Abe has to go out of his way to save his fellow Mudokons…that is, unless a good ending isn’t a priority for the player.
