That's a surprisingly good idea.

Disappointingly enough, there was no big, major Oculus Rift announcement at The Game Awards tonight (though the headset did get a small segment by Palmer Luckey himself). We did get what you might construe as a major announcement for the platform, though- Harmonix are working on a version of Rock Band for Oculus Rift.

Rock Band is the kind of game that would greatly benefit from VR, and from what was said on stage, it sounded like it will be done justice on Oculus- we are talking about a game where you are jamming it out, surrounded by thousands of adoring fans cheering you on in VR. It’s the kind of thing that would probably be the ideal VR experience, given its intrinsic universal appeal, as well as the relative lack of motion, thus negating the issue of motion sickness.

Oculus Rift itself was re-confirmed for Q1 2016, which means it is almost here.

Harminix may be known now as the creators of Guitar Hero and the upcoming Rock Band (which is getting revived with the upcoming Rock Band 4 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4), but they originally started out with a little game called Amplitude which they released for the PlayStation 2; they are now reviving that game with their Kickstarted Amplitude project for current generation PlayStation consoles, and if you have been curious about how the new game looks, then you have to wonder no more- here is 20 minutes of footage from the new game.

Moreover, this video shows us multiplayer gameplay, and four player multiplayer gameplay at that. It honestly looks pretty damn cool, and I am pretty eager to see what the full game will be like.

Amplitude launches for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4; later this year, Harmonix will also be launching Rock Band 4, on PlayStation 4 and on Xbox One.

Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage and information.

An unnamed source says it's already in development.

While Guitar Hero was the more recognized party game for many a player – and oh how long ago that was – Rock Band had its own faithful following. In many ways, while Guitar Hero would stay safe to its norms, Rock Band would try to push the envelop and actually allow new avenues of gameplay. The series has received some new DLC with Rock Band 3 recently but for the most part, the franchise has laid dormant for the past several years since Rock Band Blitz.

That could change some time in the future though. According to an unnamed source that spoke to Bloomberg, a new Rock Band game is in development for the PS4 and Xbox One. No other details were provided but at this point, just the confirmation is enough.

How will Rock Band on current gen consoles work though? Will it require the guitar peripheral we know and love/loathe? We’ll find out in the coming months if it’s true so stay tuned.

Not very subtle there, Harmonix...

While a return of Harmonix’s hit and beloved Rock Band series of music games has been teased and rumored for a while now, we haven’t exactly had anything concrete. This… is not it either. If anything, it sounds like Harmonix is stoking the fires even more, just to lean back and enjoy the frenzy.

Harmonix today released brand new DLC for Rock Band 3 (yes, I know, DLC for such an old game, this, folks, is how you do it)- these were two new songs with rather alarmingly communicative titles- Tenacious D’s Rize Of The Fenix and Weezer’s Back to the Shack. Both names are, of course, indicating some form of revival and return to business.

Harmonix, for their part, were perfectly coy about this.

“They are awesome songs with great titles,” Harmonix community manager Aaron Trites said, whistling nonchalantly. “Rock on!”

The DLC is available only on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, incidentally, so if you own the Wii version, you are out of luck. This, too, may be a hint to the future of the series.

Activision may have single handedly driven the music game genre into the ground last generation with their over saturation of the market, which is sad, because Amplitude- the actual creators of the genre, with the original Guitar Hero- were putting out some very good games even at the end of the fad, with games like Rock Band 2 and Rock Band 3 being genuinely good.

Since the bubble popped, there has been some talk from Harmonix about bringing the Rock Band series back, which personally, I would be all aboard with- again, there was nothing wrong either with their games (Rock Band was genuinely great), nor their release schedule (they released one every few years, the games were properly spaced out), and personally, I think that enough time has passed that they might be able to get the public’s attention again with a well made game.

They’re actually sending out surveys about a potential new Rock Band game as we speak right now- you should go ahead and fill it out, and be sure to tell us what you think in the comments section!

Three new tracks making their way after almost two years of no DLC.

Rock Band originally had its DLC support ended in 2013 but Harmonix is returning to add even more tracks. On January 13th, the studio will add three new songs from famous bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Arctic Monkeys and Foo Fighters. Each track will be available for $2.

The tracks in question are Avenged Sevenfold’s “Shepherd of Fire”, Arctic Monkeys’ “R U Mine?” and Foo Fighters’ “Something From Nothing”. Each track can be purchased from Rock Band Music Store and can be played with both Rock Band 3 and Rock Band Blitz. This already adds on to the already more than 3500 songs available for the franchise.

Though these songs will be out on January 13th for North America, Europe will need to wait till January 21st for the same. What are your thoughts on new DLC after almost two years of inactivity? Let us know your thoughts in the comments and stay tuned for more information.

Harmonix has revealed that it will be reviving its classic (and excellent) Rock Band IP of music games on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4; the Rock Band series of games, which was published by a collaboration of EA and Viacom, and went head to head against Activision’s Guitar Hero games (which were also debuted by Harmonix previously, incidentally). The Rock Band games always maintained a high standard and degree of quality, they were still affected by the music game market crash caused by Activision’s incredibly poor handling of the Guitar Hero franchise.

“We think about it all the time because we love Rock Band, and we’re waiting for just the right moment in the new generation of consoles to bring it back,” said Harmonix’s CEO Alex Rigopulos in an interview with GameReactor.

He continued: “Someday, when the time is right, we will want to bring it back.”

Of course, that ‘right time’ is definitely not now- presently, Harmonix is working on Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved for the Xbox One, alongside a new Dance Central and Amplitude game. So any Rock Band revival will have to wait for a while.

Will the two music franchise behemoths make an unlikely return?

One of the biggest franchises last generation was Rock Band, which Harmonix, Viacom, and EA collectively produced in response to Activision’s Guitar Hero. The games were all exceedingly high quality, but after the music game market crash, the franchise faded from public view. Harmonix went on to make the Kinect exclusive Dance Central series, but even that eventually disappeared from the limelight, especially as Ubisoft’s Just Dance games took over.

But now, Gamespot reports, Harmonix is looking at bringing both the franchises back. During a PAX panel, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos teased that the Boston area studio has plans of reviving the two brand for the next generation of consoles.

“The Rock Band and Dance Central franchises are near and dear to our hearts and our minds. And we have grand plans to bring back both of them with guns blazing at some point in the coming console cycle,” he said.

Considering especially how high quality Rock Band was, a return of the brand wouldn’t hurt at all. One would only hope, however, that Activision does not cause a market glut with its music brands in turn, that’s all.

So Rock Band iOS won’t be closed on May 31st after all. We had reported earlier that users of iOS devices which had Rock Band installed received a message which stated “Dear Rockers, On May 31, Rock Band will no longer be playable on your device.”

“Rock Band for iOS will remain live – the in-app message users received yesterday was sent in error,” said EA to CNET.

“We apologize for the confusion this caused. We’re working to clarify the issue that caused the error and will share additional information as soon as possible.”

There you go — the power of the Internet. Or maybe, it really was an error message, who knows!
