Producer Kazuhiro Echigoya speaks with GamingBolt about remaking a fan-favourite of the strategy genre.

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms franchise has been around for some time now, and across over a dozen instalments, it has delivered some of the most engaging strategy games around. And though it’s likely going to continue doing that in the years to come, for now, Koei Tecmo has taken the decision to look back at one of the series’ older entries and bring it back for modern audiences in the form of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake. Recently releasing for PC, PlayStation, and Switch, the strategy remake attempts to deliver an enhanced and expanded form of a fan-favourite, and ahead of its recent release, we were able to speak with its developers about some of the ways that it does that. Below, you can read our interview with producer Kazuhiro Echigoya.

NOTE: This interview was conducted prior to the game’s launch.

"There are several All Officer Play entries, but among them Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 is unique in that it featured scenarios for every year from the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 184 to Zhuge Liang’s death on Wuzhang Plains in 234, which is why we chose it for a remake."

For strategy games, remakes are rare – typically developers choose to simply iterate on the mechanics with a new entry rather than doing a full remake of an earlier title. What prompted the decision to return to Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8?

There is currently a trend for remakes in the game market, and we have seen success with remakes of other Koei Tecmo game series, so we decided to try remaking a Romance of the Three Kingdoms title. There are two types of Romance of the Three Kingdoms games: “ruler-based games” where players manage their force as a ruler, and “officer-based games” where they can also play as subordinate officers instead of a ruler. The previous entry, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 14, was a ruler-based title, so we decided to remake one of the officer-based ‘All Officer Play’ titles. There are several All Officer Play entries, but among them Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 is unique in that it featured scenarios for every year from the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 184 to Zhuge Liang’s death on Wuzhang Plains in 234, which is why we chose it for a remake.

How does the Relationship Chart work? What kinds of gameplay benefits will Links Forged have?

One of the defining features of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 is the ” variety of relationships”, and in this title, we’ve added the “Destiny” feature to further enhance it. One of the enjoyable aspects of this title is how your officer will form relationships and destinies with others. The progress will be shown by the “Relationship Chart”, making it easy to track how far you’ve advanced in building these bonds.

Officers with good relationships will activate “Link Forged” in domestics or in battle. For example, in battles “Link Forged” can boost damage, so it’s important to strengthen relationships with other officers before heading into battle.

Are Tales going to serve as side quests/missions players can take on while in an existing campaign, or will they be more of self-contained campaigns in and of themselves?

“Tales” will show the conditions or results of events that can be triggered, allowing players to actively choose which ones to trigger or skip. Players can also select whether to continue or stop an event partway through. This will allow them to select the parts they like most that of that are based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel or the Records of the Three Kingdoms novel.

How will the debate system work? What are the biggest ways it will change the gameplay experience?

To explain one of the biggest ways it will change the gameplay experience would be to compare it to “Duels.” In Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8, we had “Duels” where officers fight with brute force, but there were no “Debates” in which officers can battle with just intelligence. This meant that officers with greater physical strength would have an advantage. However, in this game, there are both duels and debates, making it more enjoyable for officers that are either warrior or scholar type.

In terms of how “Debates” work, when certain strategy commands or events trigger a Debate, winning it allows you to persuade your opponent. Sharpening your debate skills will prove useful in advancing through the game.

"The layout of the evaluation and city screens is intentionally kept the same as in Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8, which I believe will evoke a sense of nostalgia for fans of 8 at first glance. We also used 2D assets from 8 for the animations of the populace on the city screen and the paper cutouts in the loading screens."

What are the biggest visual enhancements that players can expect in this title? How closely will visuals resemble the spirit of the original game?

The layout of the evaluation and city screens is intentionally kept the same as in Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8, which I believe will evoke a sense of nostalgia for fans of 8 at first glance. We also used 2D assets from 8 for the animations of the populace on the city screen and the paper cutouts in the loading screens.

One thing where we’ve put significant effort into 2D materials is the ink wash painting used as the background in battle scenes. The “Art Book” included in the Digital Deluxe Edition features original ink wash paintings, which I think will be quite impressive.

Conversely, the 3D elements have been developed for current gaming platforms, ensuring that the visuals are competitive in today’s gaming market.

As developers, is there a challenge in making a game that has to scale on devices from the Nintendo Switch to the PlayStation 5?

Each platform requires adjustments, so naturally, the more platforms we support, the more we need to deal with. Especially with differences in graphical performance, we make sure that the core gameplay experience is consistent across all platforms. Please enjoy it on your preferred platform.

Is there any chance of the game eventually launching on Xbox as well?

Currently, there are no plans for releasing it on Xbox.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 is a superb remake of the best officer game in the long running 'Three Kingdoms' series. Lack of multiplayer is a misstep, but there's a lot of streamlining and tons of new content here that are well worth your time and money.

I’ll say one thing out of the gate: Koei chose the best possible game for its first Romance of the Three Kingdoms remake. RotTK VIII really coalesced the best aspects of the series, old and new, into a single addictive package. RotTK X was a great candidate for a remake too, but VIII is in much more need of a refresh considering its age. The style of the series can be divided into two ‘eras’; the early turn-based officer-focused style and the later ruler-centered style emphasizing grid-based real-time battles.

2001’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII remains one of the best officer style games in the series, with a huge cast of characters to build relationships with and a ton of freedom to switch ranks or even build your own vagabond army. And as a ruler, you could micromanage armies and command forces in battle while allocating resources through Parliament. But the turn-based battles themselves were always lacking compared to later entries. So, does the remake of the beloved classic elevate its shortcomings, or is it just a shiny coat of paint to a 23 year-old game? Thankfully, despite a few notable missteps, this remake elevates the 23-year-old game with some quality-of-life enhancements and loads of new content.

"Unlike Liu Bei’s historic entourage, players won’t be able to team up together for multiplayer sessions."

Romance of the Three Kingdoms can be a daunting beast of a series, so before diving deep into gameplay mechanics, let’s first go over what the remake removes from the original. We have to start with some sad news; the remake completely got rid of the multiplayer from the original. Perhaps one of the most defining features of RotTK VIII was its 8-player hot-seat (pass-the-controller) strategy matches. Governing cities while defending against a friend’s attack or making alliances with other friends to salvage a border region was especially memorable back in the day. The RotTK 8 Remake gave fans hope that they could relive their late-night group campaigns with magnificent online functionality, but alas, those dreams were put to the sword faster than a dual against Lu Bu. The game’s director just didn’t think multiplayer worth the effort, citing server strain and the ‘impracticality’ of couch co-op as reasons to keep it strictly single player. This remake adds a lot to the original, don’t get me wrong, but the complete elimination of multiplayer is a definite downgrade. Heck, even if you’re just in it for the single player, the inability to control more than one officer at a time is a step back from the original.

"Parliament gives you all the strategic tools you need to run the kingdom as a ruler."

What’s not a step back is the general gameplay loop of RotTK 8 Remake, which remains authentic yet even more robust. Before starting the game proper, you can turn on the handy tutorial, which guides you along your campaign’s opening steps. After selecting one of the bazillion officers and scenario/time periods, you’re greeted with a unique cinematic outlining the specific events and political machinations embroiling China for that given scenario. Then, it’s time to get down to business. The gameplay flow surging through RotTK 8 is addicting. The gameplay loop cycles between three broad stages: strategic planning, interpersonal development, and battles. Your officer rank determines how much control you get during any of these stages, with Ruler having almost complete control of every possible action.

Rulers feel particularly at home during Parliamentary sessions (the strategic planning phase), where they distribute troops between settled cities, engage in diplomacy, and declare battle with other forces. Those seeking a more slice of life experience are likely to enjoy the three-month City sections, which entail deepening bonds with officers, fulfilling missions, and training to raise stats. And then, of course, strategic battles between armies consist of controlling units on a battlefield grid, with one-on-one duals between rival officers.

"Duals are a simple affair, but the return to turn-based combat is refreshing after the active combat later titles employed."

Officer duals went through a needed renovation from the original game, with a simple, yet sufficient cinematic card game determining the outcome. The winner is the one who plays the highest total of cards each round, with officer stats determining starting HP and damage per round. I like how skills and traits can buff certain card strategies, deepening the RPG DNA within RotTK 8 Remake even further. Want to engage in battles with your high intelligence officers?

Well, debate duals feature the same card-based gameplay as combat duals. Since we’re on the subject of intelligence, the AI is supposed to be improved in this remake, but I found the normal difficulty AI to make some truly baffling decisions during duals and grid-based combat, often playing lower cards for no reason or leaving troops alone to die. Harder difficulties supply smarter AI, but don’t leave much room for players just wanting a softer challenge with adequately intellegent AI. In other words, there’s still a noticeable gap between the occasional brain-dead AI and hard mode, but it’s more balanced than the original at least.

"Fulfilling missions in the city and developing relationships with fellow officers remains a highlight of RotTK 8"

Still, all of these disparate gameplay systems dovetail together into a satisfying loop that fulfil the lifestyle sim, managerial, and combat aspects beautifully. I’m an RPG nut, so I found myself particularly enjoying all the stat training and relationship development. Strategy fans will enjoy what this game has to offer in that regard as well.

While it’s nice that every type of player has something to chew on here, the systems do occasionally whittle down to mere busywork at times. I guarantee that once you’ve gotten used to the core gameplay loop, you’ll habitually begin to skip repeated dialogue and prompts with almost wanton negligence. Dialogue and menu actions can be swiftly skipped through by mashing the ‘confirm’ button, helping to speed along what could have been a very slow paced process. The game has hardly any loading between menus and sections, so that’s a plus too.

"RotTK 8 Remake has the largest roster of characters of any game in the series with over 1000 playable officers."

We should all be thankful for the quick loading, since this remake has a metric ton of content to chew through. All 600 of the original officers return here, plus everyone from the Power Up Kit content, resulting in over 1000 total playable characters. Amazingly, each character is individually voiced in Japanese, in addition to their own unique portrait, stats, relationships, etc. For those unfamiliar, officers make up the core foundation of the RotTK 8 experience.

This is because an officer can become any role imaginable, from a ‘lowly’ free officer to a ruler of an entire nation. One of the joys of RotTK 8 is this unfettered freedom to play however you want; whether you play the ruthless warlord Lu Bu as a reserved tactician or role-play as your own custom officer rising the ranks to ruler, the game doesn’t try and stop you.

The officer creator is largely the same from the original RotTK VIII, but you can now allocate skill points freely with no restriction. If you’re an RPG player like myself, you’ll enjoy starting out as a nobody 15-year-old with low stats as you train and grind through that oh-so-satisfying progression loop. I also love the option to insert your created officers into any campaign and choose what force they belong to.

If you’re really into custom campaigns, you can even create your own army using a multitude of created officers and use them against historical forces like the Yellow Turbans, upstaging Cao Cao and the like. Speaking of historical figures like Cao Cao, it’s possible to edit all of their parameters to your liking; you just need to complete a campaign with the character first.

"The new relationship chart gives helpful info for each officer in the game, a convenience lacking in the original game"

Your officer’s journey is much more dynamic and interesting in this remake thanks to added complexity to relationship bonds. Officers have certain ‘destined’ bonds with characters, which take the form of synergistic or antagonistic links. The bond events are pretty bog-standard, like a few text slides portraying the two friends going hunting or drinking. The dialog choices from the original are gone, now just being automatic events dependent on bond level and stats. The practical function of these little events remains the same: increasing your trust/bond with characters further as well as some stat or reputation increases.

Helping organize the complex web of relationships throughout any campaign is the brand new relationship chart. This chart helps you keep track of every character’s rivals, sworn siblings, sworn enemies, spouse, etc., so you can better understand where allegiances stand between each officer. These multi-layered systems between officers are always dynamically changing and reacting to player and AI choices, resulting in some truly wacky scenarios that fly in the face of the game’s historical source material at times.

"Tales are a great convenience feature outlining all the winning conditions and historical event triggers possible in any given campaign."

Or you can strictly follow the historical story beat for beat, something that is more streamlined than ever thanks to the new ‘Tales’ event log. Depending on the Scenario you start with, historical events will pop up as objectives in the Tales log. You are shown all the conditions and rewards to complete the event, along with the timeframe before it disappears. Of course, you can just ignore all the historical events and the game will continue on with an unpredictable result. There are more than just historical events within the Tales log though, various winning conditions, and tutorials will circumstantially pop up to help guide your campaign with things to aim for. Much of the content within the Tales event log was in the original game, but the event log itself wasn’t a guidance feature until this remake, making for a better gameplay experience.

Thankfully, all 54 scenarios from the original and its Power Up Kit are included, along with the nestled sub-scenarios branching off of various key event choices. That’s 80-plus in-game years full of historical stories told through cutscenes and emergent gameplay. What’s more, the developers have expressed an interest in releasing more ‘what if’ scenarios after launch. This is an outrageous amount of content; I’d wager a full lifetime wouldn’t even be enough to full 100% this game with every officer and every scenario. That said, much of what you see in a single campaign is just rearranged stuff that can be experienced in other campaigns. This is partly due to the game’s necessarily minimalistic presentation.

"The same backdrops occur time and time again within events and menus, regardless of the city or time period, but the vast number of character portraits helps add variety."

While it’s true that no two campaigns will be the same, you will see the same assets and locales time and time again. The remake has a cheaply animated, though pretty hand-drawn look for its portraits and menus, while going for PS3-era 3D character models with the 1-on-1 duals and debates. The remake does a pretty good job emulating the city screen movement of the original with a more polished high-res look, and the Parliament map is more easily discernable with each territory being clearly outlined. I admit to preferring the toy doll look of the original’s scaled-down characters, but can’t complain with the almost ‘Octopath’ style of the background characters as they walk across the city.

Cities look very similar to one another, and battle maps and parliaments aren’t much different either, resulting in a lot of homogeneous environments. The environments kind of drained on me after a while, but the new orchestral score never left me fatigued. This is partly due to the option to play the game using the original soundtrack, which has its fair share of charm considering the 2001 soundfont used. The remake soundtrack is beautifully orchestrated, with calming melodic city themes and militant warlike anthems translated perfectly for modern sound systems (and who doesn’t love Holst’s ‘Mars‘, no matter the version).

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake does a fantastic job expanding the gameplay loop of the original while adding much-needed convenience features like the ‘Tales’ tab and relationship charts. The bevy of content outweighs the original, featuring all of the Power Up Kit content that the PS2 version never got and more officers and scenarios than you have time for. This is a good strategy game set within the ‘Three Kingdoms’ that I can heartily recommend to any strategy fan or RPG fan with a love for lifestyle sim qualities. While there are certainly better-balanced strategy games out there, this remains one of the better ‘Three Kingdoms’ titles in a long time, even if Koei completely gave up on the multiplayer aspect.

October is perhaps the most-packed month of video game releases this year. Here are all of the big titles and what's worth playing.

If you thought September was jam-packed with blockbusters, then October ups the ante further. Not one but two eagerly-anticipated horror remakes. A long-awaited sequel to one of BioWare’s most renowned franchises. The first paid expansion to Blizzard’s hit action RPG looter. And lest we forget, a new Sonic experience with a darker twist. Check out 15 of the biggest new games launching in October.

Until Dawn Remake

Before it dabbled in horror anthologies and that one underwhelming Dead by Daylight crossover, Supermassive Games had its big break with Until Dawn. It’s getting the remake treatment, launching on October 4th for PS5 and PC, courtesy of Ballistic Moon. Rebuilt from the ground up on Unreal Engine 5, it features improvements to character models and textures, liquid physics (like, say, blood spatters), effects, facial animations, and more.

There’s also a new third-person camera, providing an alternative perspective on classic scenes, new areas prompting new interactions, and even a reworked prologue. PC players will have to suffer mandatory PSN requirements, but if you’re interested in Supermassive’s best work yet, then Until Dawn’s remake could be worth it.

Silent Hill 2 Remake

Counterpoint: Wait four more days and experience Bloober Team’s remake of one of the best horror games ever. Silent Hill 2 remake arrives on October 8th for PS5 and PC, with “other platforms” (they know who they are) having to wait another year. The story of James Sunderland as he ventures into the mysterious Silent Hill at the behest of his deceased wife is intact, as is the series’ iconic fog and horrors like Pyramid Head.

However, almost everything else has seen an overhaul. A new third-person view and combat mechanics, new enemy attacks, changes to enemy locations and items, more buildings to explore – the list goes on. Whether it lives up to the original or not, Silent Hill 2 remake looks to prove itself.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake

Of course, if neither of the previous two options works out, there’s one more remake – Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8. Based on Koei’s turn-based strategy from 2001, it features a revamped aesthetic, new features like Tales and Destiny (the latter altering events significantly), and the option to play as any officer (with the total number raised to 1000 from 600). Unorthodox? It doesn’t offer the over-the-top hack-and-slash action of Dynasty Warriors, but Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake is still worth checking out for fans when it launches on October 24th for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Following numerous rumors over the years, Guerilla Games finally revealed Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and it’s on track to launch on October 31st for PS5 and PC. Leaving aside the necessity of the release, several changes and features could make it worthwhile for old and new fans. Hours of conversations have been re-recorded, and multiple improvements can be seen in the character models, animations, and lighting.

There’s also support for the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, support save transfer from the original game, accessibility features from Horizon Forbidden West (which should make grinding for materials less painful), and a $9.99 upgrade option for current owners. At $49.99 for new players, it’s not the worst way to experience the 2017 open-world action RPG and its expansion, The Frozen Wilds, especially given the sheer amount of content. It even supports the PS5 Pro out of the box.

Throne and Liberty

A new free-to-play MMORPG? In this economy? Technically, Throne and Liberty was meant as a sequel to Lineage and announced as such in 2011. Plans changed, and it morphed into the current game, which launched in December 2023 for South Korea. It’s coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 1st, bringing its mix of castle sieges, massive PvP battles, combat styles, and even transformations to North America, Europe and Japan. Will it stand out and offer a fun new experience? We’ll find out soon enough.

Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred

You’d be forgiven for not remembering the ending to Diablo 4, especially with how its big bad turned out. Venturing to Nahantu to search for Neyrelle, the Wanderer encounters new enemies, dangerous new locations, and the Spiritborn, a new friendly faction that joins the fight. Players can choose the Spiritborn as a new class, harnessing different spirits and elemental properties to annihilate their enemies.

Regardless of how the story turns out, Vessel of Hatred promises tons of new content, from new Mercenaries with unique skill trees, the return of Runewords, and a new co-op activity, the Dark Citadel, to master. It launches on October 8th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC, alongside a free update that overhauls progression, introduces new skills per class, and much more.

Starship Troopers: Extermination

Arrowhead Game Studios’ latest update for Helldivers 2 appears to have dragged it out of an unfun state. However, if it’s another co-op-focused alien bug-stomping shooter that you want, then Starship Troopers: Extermination may be the ticket. Exiting early access on October 11th and becoming available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, it features a new campaign starring Johnny Rico from the original film with 25 missions. This is on top of all the base defense, fast-paced first-person shooter combat, 16-player co-op, and extraction that makes the current product such a blast.

Undisputed

Amid all its sports titles, it’s a shame that Electronic Arts hasn’t brought back Fight Night. Until then, Steel City Interactive’s Undisputed will have to fill that gap when it exits early access on October 11th for PC while also becoming available for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Featuring over 70 fighters, multiple traits and attributes, +60 punches, and a Career Mode with champions from the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Organization, and International Boxing Federation, it could very well be worth the wait.

Post Trauma

October isn’t just about highly anticipated sequels and blockbusters – it’s also prime horror season. If Silent Hill and Until Dawn aren’t enough, Red Soul Games’ Post Trauma launches on October 29th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It sees a train conductor, Roman, trapped in a bizarre world and attempting to escape, solving puzzles and escaping from horrifying monstrosities. While it channels old-school survival horror titles with its fixed camera angles, Post Trauma offers various control types, from modern style to tank style, for a truly classic experience.

A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead

Those seeking something scary based on a film franchise might want to check out A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead. Picking up right after the murderous aliens arrive on Earth, players control Alex Taylor as she attempts to evade their cruelty and protect her loved ones. The focus on not making any sound, avoiding unnecessary contact with the environment at all costs, and even retrieving inhalers makes for some tense gameplay. Whether it translates into genuine scares or a memorable story remains to be seen, but it’s out on October 17th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Unknown 9: Awakening

Reflector Entertainment’s Unknown 9: Awakening is out on October 18th for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC after being announced in 2020. The action-adventure occurs in the 19th century and stars Haroona, who possesses unique abilities tied to the Fold. She seeks answers while fighting off a dangerous organization known as the Ascendants, who have sinister plans for the Fold.

With the ability to cloak, possess enemies, and slip into the Fold, Haroona will traverse the globe, visiting India, Portugal and many other locations. Even if the gameplay could use more polish, the set-up is intriguing, and we’re curious to see how it pans out.

Europa

If an adventure with a more animated art style is your thing, Future Friends Games’ Europa is an option. Launching on October 11th for PC and Nintendo Switch, the story sees an android, Zee, venturing through Jupiter’s moon Europa. With utterly gorgeous environments to discover secrets, the gameplay mixes exploration, platforming, and puzzle-solving combined with a mystery that could make for a more emotional tale amid all the serious offerings this month.

Alan Wake 2: The Lake House

Something wicked this way comes in Alan Wake 2’s second and final paid DLC, The Lake House. It returns to Cauldron Lake in Bright Falls, venturing into a facility of the same name set up by the Federal Bureau of Control (of Control fame). While very little is known about the story, it’s clear that something has gone wrong. Narrated from the perspective of Kiran Estevez, the story occurs parallel to the base game’s events, potentially opening up new clues about the lake’s powers and the Dark Presence.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the expansion is that this isn’t a humorous or kitschy experience like Night Springs. Remedy Entertainment has focused on delivering a “chilling survival horror experience”, and while there’s more yet to be revealed, it’s teased that “monsters wear many faces.” Alan Wake 2: The Lake House launches in October and is available only with the Deluxe Edition and physical Collector’s Edition.

MechWarrior 5: Clans

Suffering a slight delay from October 3rd to 17th, Clans is the other half of the MechWarrior 5 experience, the first being Mercenaries from 2021. It features a standalone cinematic story where players participate in Operation Revival after graduating from the Smoke Jaguar program.

With your customizable BattleMech and numerous options, including an overhauled MechLab and Hardpoint systems, you harness new weapons, upgrade pilots, and lead your squad to victory. With dynamic destruction, the same brutal grounded combat fans know and love, and support for up to five players in multiplayer, MechWarrior 5: Clans could be a dark horse when it launches for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Sonic X Shadow Generations

Sonic X Shadow Generations offers a remaster of Sonic Generations, which features a “Greatest Hits” compilation of 2D and 3D Sonic levels from across the series (up to 2011). However, the main attraction is the standalone campaign starring Shadow the Hedgehog, which sees him battling the mysteriously resurgent Black Doom.

Shadow sports new powers and traverses areas from his memories, whether it’s venturing through Kingdom Valley from Sonic ’06, or battling the Biolizard from Sonic Adventure 2. There’s a lot to look forward to and some excellent re-renditions of classic tracks when Sonic X Shadow Generations launches on October 25th for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Life is Strange: Double Exposure

Max Caulfield, protagonist of the first Life is Strange, returns in Double Exposure. Located at Caledon University, she settles down and finally feels comfortable after a long time. Unfortunately, when her new friend, Safi, is murdered, Max attempts to reawaken her Rewind powers and instead opens a portal to a parallel dimension.

Not only is Safi alive in this world, but things are significantly different all around. Time is ticking down, however, and Max must locate her killer before it’s too late again. With intriguing mechanics and puzzles that facilitate carrying over items between dimensions, Life is Strange: Double Exposure offers another compelling supernatural mystery. It’s out on October 29th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Last but certainly not least is Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the first new title for the series in almost ten years. While Solas, the Dread Wolf, is a wild card, you have seven companions to join your cause, each with distinct abilities and skill trees, unique quests and motivations.

Unlike Inquisition, Veilguard offers a mission-based campaign with real-time action RPG combat. Players can choose from three classes, each with three Specializations, and command two other party members, setting up combos and destroying enemies accordingly (with a tactical wheel available to plan everything). With an immense scale, gorgeous visuals, and a promising story, Dragon Age: The Veilguard could be BioWare’s long-awaited redemption when it launches on October 31st for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Players will have access to a wide variety of tactical options in Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake.

Publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Kou Shibusawa have revealed some of the battle techniques that players will be able to use in the upcoming Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake.

Alongside being able to do things like partaking in the Parliament, or sending out soldiers to invade enemy towns, players can also employ deeper levels of tactics by adjusting the unit types they are sending out to battle. This is especially important, since different types of units tend to excel in different scenarios, and the variety of different terrains means that players will have to choose wisely.

Players can also outfit their armies with officers, which can turn weaker units into strong forces capable of winning previously-unwinnable battles, depending on the relationship between the army and its officers.

Alongside regular warfare, players can also set up traps and make use of defensive buildings like Watchtowers, Gates and Signal Towers, each of which providing unique affects to the player’s defensive capabilities.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake is coming on October 24. Check out the game’s first trailer for more details.

The turn-based tactics game will be available at launch on PlayStation 5 PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

How long it’ll be before we get the next mainline, new entry in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms franchise is anyone’s guess, but fans of the series do still have something to look forward to, with a ground-up remake of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8, considered by many to be among the series’ finer instalments. Koei Tecmo has, in fact, also released a new trailer to offer a first real look at what the remake will look like and what gameplay improvements you can expect.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake isn’t just going to be a straight and simple recreation of the original PS2 title, instead featuring newly added playable officers and forces, updates to the All Periods Scenarios feature to now feature over 55 scenarios, improvements to the All Officers Play feature that will allow for Symbiotic and Antagonistic relationships to be formed between characters, the addition of Traits and Tales for officers and Relationship Charts, and more.
