The best of the best in a resurgent genre.

It’s hard to think of a single genre in the history of this medium that has enjoyed the kind of resurgence that Metroidvanias have. Popularized by the likes of Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Metroidvanias were quite niche for a long time. But over the last decade or so, thanks to the efforts of incredibly talented indie developers and a few major AAA studios, Metroidvanias are now a dime a dozen, and have become so popular that even games that don’t commit fully to the genre end up using elements of it.

In this feature, we’ll be talking about what we feel have been the 15 best Metroidvania games of the last few years. Given how spoilt for choice we are, it goes without saying that we’ll be missing out on a few games, so sound off about those in your comments below.

So let’s kick this off, and let’s begin with the most obvious choice:

HOLLOW KNIGHT

To say that Hollow Knight is not only one of the best games of the last few years, but quite simply one of the greatest games ever made, would not be an exaggeration in the slightest. Team Cherry’s masterpiece exudes a breathtaking level of confidence in everything it does, from the crisp combat, the incredible atmosphere, and the tight platforming to the labyrinthine map design, the charming visuals, and the memorable boss fights. It’s the standard that all Metroidvania games should aspire to, and stands toe-to-toe with genre giants like Super Metroid.

The gorgeous 2D Souls-like game makes its way to Microsoft’s console in a few weeks.

The fantastic 2D Souls-like indie game Salt and Sanctuary will be making the jump to Xbox One, the developers confirmed today. The best part? The game will be coming to Xbox One in just a few short weeks, with an announced release date of February 6 meaning you won’t have to wait too long for the game to hit Microsoft’s platform.

The title will cost $18 on Xbox One, and will be ported by BlitWorks. For those of you who like challenging platformers, Souls games, or Metroidvania style titles, this is definitely worth a buy (and at the price, is practically a steal as well). It’s good to see the game coming to more platforms yet as well, and expand its audience—the title originally launched as a PS4 exclusive, then went on to hit, in order, PC, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, and now of course, Xbox One.

If you’re unsure on what kind of game it is, make sure to check out the Xbox One announcement trailer for the game below.

Prepare to die, in this gorgeous 2D take on the Dark Souls formula.

Do you remember Salt and Sanctuary? The excellent 2D Souls-like game launched originally on PS4, with a PS Vita and PC release following afterwards. It was a great game, and a wonderful translation of the Souls concept to the 2D sidescroller format. Now, it will be coming to Nintendo’s Switch.

Ska Studios announced today that they will be bringing the game to Nintendo’s hybrid on August 2 (as in, literally next week), with BlitWorks having been brought in to help them out with the port. It will be available for $18, and will launch with support for a whole host of languages- English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Plus, if you like your games physical, even on Switch for some reason, there’s more good news- Salt and Sanctuary: Drowned Tome Edition will be available at retail this Holiday season.

Given the success of games like Hollow Knight on Switch, as well as the continued, inexplicable delays the Switch version of Dark Souls Remastered is suffering, this is sure to find an enthusiastic and receptive audience on the Switch. You can check out a trailer for it below.

The 2D Souls homage finally hits PC.

Ska Studios’ Salt and Sanctuary is now available for PC, two months after releasing on the PlayStation 4. You can pick it up on Steam for $16.19 thanks to a ten percent discount on the original $17.99 asking price.

As Ska Studios’ first PC game, Salt and Sanctuary is actually heavily inspired by From Software titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. The action is presented in a 2D platformer format with hand-drawn visuals and players can use a variety of weapons with combos, air attacks and magic. It’s received positive praise for its adaptation of the Souls formula into the 2D space, something which From Software itself failed to do with Slashy Souls on mobile phones.

Salt and Sanctuary will also be heading to the PS4 as a physical retail release though information on a release date is still pending. What are your thoughts on the game? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more information.

Dark Souls-style side scroller also bound for Asia and Japan.

Ska Studios’ Salt and Sanctuary is one of the better PS4 games currently available, whether you enjoy indie titles or not, and it won’t be long before PC gamers get a chance to play. According to the developer, the PC version is in development and a release date should be announced soon.

The PlayStation Vita version will be handled by a different developer and it seems the PS4 version may even receive a limited physical release. Gamers in Asia and Japan can also look forward to playing the game in the coming days.

As a side-scrolling action RPG, Salt and Sanctuary has been compared to the Dark Souls series (from which the developer admitted to drawing inspiration). It features difficult enemies, a variety of weapons including two-handed weapons and the ability to use shields, and magic. The PS4 version has done fairly well for Ska Studios so stay tuned for more information on the PC version and its release in the coming month.

RPGs. RPGs are everywhere in 2015.

The RPG genre has been on something of a hot streak for the past couple years. You can’t shake a stick without hitting a game that’s either borrowing elements from the genre or an excellent RPG in its own right. 2015 is no exception, and there are a ton of quality RPGs that planned for release in the coming year. That said, we’ve narrowed it down to 15 games that you should keep your eyes on next year.

This list is in no particular order.

15. Dead Island 2

All right, I know what you’re thinking: Dead Island 2 isn’t an RPG. But it kinda is, actually. Technically, it’s an action RPG. You’ve got stats, perks, upgrades, an experience system, and even classes to choose from, in terms of the characters. Dead Island 2 is set in sunny California, and will feature more fragile, and more deadly, zombies, according to developer Yager. You may have heard of them – they were responsible for 2012’s incredible Spec Ops: The Line.
