No matter how much time passes or how often we revisit them, these 15 titles remain as scary now as they did back in the day.

The horror genre is in pretty good health these days with games like Resident Evil Village and Returnal seeing success. Meanwhile, indie titles like World of Horror, Little Nightmares, Mundaun and many more continue to garner attention. And while the genre has seen its ups and downs over the decades, there are plenty of classics that remain scary to this day. Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

Silent Hill 2

Konami struck gold with Silent Hill when it was released in 1999 for the PlayStation One. However it would be the sequel, released a mere 19 months later, that cemented itself in the halls of horror gaming. Silent Hill 2 didn’t just give us iconic horrors like Pyramid Head – it explored the consequences of one’s actions, the confrontation of deep-seated trauma, and the manifestation of one’s inner nightmares. That it was impeccably paced, well-written and atmospheric as a whole also helped distinguish it among other classics.

Halloween is coming up and along with experiencing the classics, it's a great time to delve into some lesser known horror games.

While we may be familiar with the likes of Silent Hill, Resident Evil and more, there are a number of other lesser known titles that are worth indulging in for your horror fix. Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

Scarlet Hollow

For all intents and purposes, Scarlet Hollow is a visual novel with extensive dialogue choices, traits and a relationship system, where it’s possible to become friend or foe with different characters, further influencing one’s own story. Backed by some great art and aesthetics, there’s a genuinely disturbing tale underneath with events changing based on your choices. What dark mystery awaits in this quiet mining town? It’s up to you to find out.

When you least expected it, these 90s games terrified you the most.

For as far as technology and graphics have progressed, some of the best scares in gaming are also some of the oldest. These are the terrors that transcend time, preying on our fears to incredible effect. Let’s take a look at 13 scary moments from the 90s games that probably still haunt you.

Zombie Dogs – Resident Evil

While the very first meeting with a zombie, as it slowly turned around, revealing its mutilated face will stick with us, the dogs from Resident Evil 1 are way more memorable. The game starts with the main cast running from a pack of undead dogs, seeking shelter in the mansion. You know it won’t be the last time dealing with them, but you half-expect one to suddenly leap through a window as you’re walking down the corridor. Or even for a second one to join in.

For all the best chills and thrills, these games come highly recommended.

Horror is always such a difficult genre to pull off. It requires correct timing, the appropriate narrative and proper build-up. Still, everyone is scared of something especially in video games. So let’s take a look at the 30 best horror games ever made and why you should experience them.

Amnesia Collection

Frictional Games was no stranger to the horror gaming scene thanks to the Penumbra series. However, Amnesia: The Dark Descent completely blew away expectations. Its tale of confusion and mystery, highlighted by the protagonist’s amnesia, clashed with the oppressive shadow that constantly sought out players. Amnesia: The Dark Descent delivered a compelling psychological horror experience that was simple but still wholly terrifying. The Amnesia Collection features the first game, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (developed by The Chinese Room) and Amnesia: Justine. While the latter two range from above average to good, the entire collection is a steal for the amount of scares it provides.

Take a look at 15 games that effectively worm their way into your thoughts.

There are games which toss various monsters at the player, forcing one to gun them down with impunity. However, other titles deliver their terror in a more nuanced way. Yes, they may still feature blood and gore but these games are more intent on messing with your head in the most twisted way possible. Let’s take a look at the 15 best psychological horror games.

Outlast

Outlast 2 may have seen a tremendous bump in visuals but the original Outlast is arguably scarier. There are so many things going wrong in Mount Massive Asylum from mentally ill inmates to grotesque oddities like Chris Walker constantly stalking you. The game is focused on stealth and fleeing from foes with the camera’s night vision offering an edge in the dark (though batteries are needed to recharge). From pure insanity to outright grotesque violence, Outlast is an experience that will stay with you long after it ends.
