Sony preparing to launch the PS4 in China?

After Microsoft confirmed yesterday that the Xbox One would be launching in China, Sony seems to be following suit- Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has opened up a new ‘China strategy branch,’ which will be led by Takehito Soeda.

This isn’t an announcement of an official release of the PS4 in the country, but it seems extremely likely now- China reversed its ban on gaming consoles a few months ago, and with Microsoft and Nintendo both either already having a presence in China, or intending to have one soon, it’s only a matter of time before Sony jumps all in there as well.

Of course, whether the Chinese market is receptive and actually an important factor in the next generation of console wars is a entirely different matter- people expected the Indian market to be crucial in the console wars once the console manufacturers started focusing on it roughly a decade ago, and while the Indian market is certainly rapidly growing, its overall contribution to the numbers is negligible. China too may turn out the same way.

The shooter has something to showcase - but what?

Ready At Dawn’s The Order: 1886 now has a Japanese site, courtesy of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, along with a trailer for the game which can be checked out above.

The PlayStation 4 recently launched in Japan so it could be something related to revealing The Order: 1886 for audiences in the East. Whatever it may be, some kind of reveal is being teased for March 13th with the tagline stating that, “The full picture will be revealed on March 13th.”

Which is just great and all but at this stage, what could be possibly revealed aside from more gameplay or a Japanese TV spot or something that isn’t already readily available online? Like the gameplay preview which debuted the game’s mechanics and characters?

Regardless, The Order: 1886 is only gaining momentum on the way to E3 2014. It will be releasing exclusively for the PS4 and is rumoured to be releasing in Autumn. Stay tuned for more details.

Even though it launched on February 22nd and was only available for two days within the sales week (which runs from Monday to Sunday) – Sony’s PlayStation 4 managed to sell 322,083 units in Japan. This is according to Famitsu though, so we’ll need to wait before the official Media Create sales charts come through.

Nonetheless, it’s still a solid indicator of the console’s success in the country. We’ll also find out about the fate of launch titles like Yakuza Ishin, which also launched for the PlayStation 3. The console has managed to sell 5.3 million units worldwide as of February and there’s every chance that it could cross one million units sold within the first week in Japan.

As of now, there aren’t many big exclusives coming up aside from inFamous: Second Son, though various third party titles like Thief, Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and many more have either released or are coming soon.

Completion of the project and its release are sadly beyond Ueda's control however.

Though he’s no longer the director for the project, Fumito Ueda still feels sorry that fans have had to wait so long to get their hands on The Last Guardian when speaking to EDGE.

“Putting aside the short-term output, more than anything I feel terribly sorry that for various reasons I have kept my audience waiting for such a long time.”

Originally revealed in 2009, The Last Guardian was scheduled to release by 2011 for the PlayStation 3 but has since been delayed. Now, with the PS4 having released, there are rumours that it could shift over to the next-generation of consoles. Ueda has since left the project as director but continues on as a special consultant. “It was not easy,” on being asked about Sony’s reaction to his news, “but I can’t go into the details just yet. It will be good to be able to discuss it along with a post-mortem of The Last Guardian someday.”

Meanwhile, Ueda talked about how he remains motivated despite having worked on the same project for more than 6 years. “Maintaining motivation is all about producing something great. A hobby or alcohol might help to refresh you temporarily, but they won’t motivate creativity. Also, the original staff members on Ico and SOTC are just as fussy over details as I am. I always want to create quickly, and I always want to increase the rate of production.

“In the case of The Last Guardian, my creative work was mostly finished a long time ago, but the details of when, where and how it will be completed are beyond my control.”

Sequel to last year's excellent Vita game teased.

Gravity Rush was one of the most striking, unique, and memorable experiences on the PlayStation Vita when it released last year, in spite of all its problems (and it had a fair few). The title is arguably Sony’s marquee effort for its portable, and was a great example of the unbridled creativity that Sony’s Japan Studio can often exhibit.

This year at their TGS keynote, Sony teased a new game in the franchise- a sequel to the first game. Check out the teaser above for yourself.

If Gravity Rush 2 can fix all that was wrong with the first game while also simultaneously maintaining the feeling of freshness of the original title by introducing new mechanics, it should be a hell of a game to look out for, and along with the original, might provide players with one of the best reasons to buy into Sony’s portable ecosystem. That is, of course, assuming that it is a PS Vita exclusive, and not a PS4/PS4-Vita multiplat game.

We’ll keep an eye out on this and let you know more about it as and when we learn it.

Updates for Asian territories to cease in March 2014.

As an interactive social media hub of sorts, PlayStation Home allowed players to create avatars and interact with each other in a sort of virtual online world. For all the flak that its received, there are still plenty of Home users out there. Regardless, Sony has announced that updates Home in Japan will cease in September. It has also revealed that the content will end for all Asian territories in March 2014.

Because we couldn’t get enough of it as it is. However, markets where Home does see its fair share of users will remain unaffected, as the US and Europe will still receive updates. Considering that there has been some clamouring for Home on the PlayStation 4, it remains to be seen whether this will affect chances of the same. Will it be long before Home is phased out in the West as well? Time will tell.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 launches on November 15th in the US and November 29th in Europe.

A quick look at the upcoming PS4 exclusive, Knack

Earlier today at Gamescom 2013, the trailer for the upcoming PS4 exclusive release, Knack, was debuted. From the trailer, it looks like we can expect extremely well detailed graphics, and some interesting and fun new gameplay mechanics centered on the titular character.

The following is the description for Knack released by the PlayStation:

“Mankind must turn to Knack, an unlikely hero, to protect them from a dangerous new threat. The unassuming Knack stands at a mere three feet tall, but thanks to the power of mysterious ancient relics, he can transform into a powerful brute or even a gigantic wrecking machine. Knack is mankind’s only hope for turning the tide against the invading goblin army, but trying to harness the true power of the relics could threaten to put the whole world at risk.

From Mark Cerny, one of the greatest minds in video games today, Knack is a fun-filled adventure of colossal proportions that invites players to wield fantastic powers and discover a unique and vibrant world, available exclusively for PlayStation 4.”

As expected, there is no shortage of awesomeness coming out of Gamescom this year, and odds are there’s only more to come.

Twisted and demented in its own cutesy ways, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan’s Puppeteer represents an interesting take on the 2.5D/3D platforming genre as we follow the puppet Kutaro as he journeys to face the Moon Bear King. But why is he after the king? Simple – he wants his head back.

In a new story trailer released for the same, Puppeteer will have Kutaro going around collecting heads and taking on their abilities on the way to retrieving his own. This includes the heads of the for Moon Heroes who have a way of smiting Moon Bear King.

There’s also the rapidly changing and free-flowing “stage” as you go along in the game. Being played out against the backdrop of an audience is one thing, but Puppeteer takes it to almost surrealist levels. Check it out when it launches in North America on September 10th and in Europe on September 11th for $40/€40.

This stealth game wants you to feel "uncertain". Mission accomplished.

We got to take a closer look at the SCEJ-developer Rain, which will be heading to PlayStation Network for PS3 when it releases. It comes from the same team that bought us Tokyo Jungle and Echochrome.

Rain has you playing as a boy who enters an unknown region at night and suddenly becomes invisible. He can only be seen when he wanders into the rain, and must protect an unknown girl from the invisible monsters that stalk the night. Since there are no attacks, it’s a delicate balance between distracting the monsters and making your presence known to get by them.

Heck, at times, you need to bump into things just to be able to see yourself.

It’s an intriguing concept to be sure, and Sony showcased some gameplay footage and screenshots to indicate just how the game will cause players to be “uncertain” throughout. We’ll see how this pans out when the game releases, hopefully within this year.

Lockdown.

The PS4 was unveiled yesterday and we felt the conference was pretty good as you can read from our review here. It’s a common thing that PlayStation consoles are developed in Japan, since they hold all the cards.

However, Hiroshi Kawano, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, revealed that he hasn’t seen the final PS4 design, and he doesn’t know what it looks like.

“If I’m being honest, I also haven’t seen its final design. Even the controller we showed today, I saw the final design around yesterday or so,” he told 4gamer.

“I’ve seen numerous prototypes from when it was still codenamed ‘Jedai’, and I heard that an onboard touch pad was in the final specs.”

It looks like Sony has been extremely secretive of the whole thing, which is good since there were hardly any leaks, except the controller.

You can check our coverage of the PS4 here. Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
